Amir

18 and 9 tonight.

He was all over the floor tonight. This was his breakout game.

I loved watching him drive to the basket.
Depaul had to foul him. He was a step ahead of them all night.

He was all over the boards, and he was getting after it all over the court.

He was fantastic.  He drove around his defender with ease almost every time.  Kid is going to be real good.  He really impressed tonight, even with some great pull-up jumpers. 

when he steps into his shot it looks good. you can see at the line that his stroke isnt all that bad. Good for the kid that he gets to play pro baseball but bad for us. A summer working on his game with rico would do him wonders.

I am suprised that hes only blocked 3 shots since joining the squad, thought he could get us close to 1 a game.

His follow up dunk was the best play I've seen this year.

I love Garrett's game.  He's a calming influence out there with his smart passing and presence. He's our best 50/50 ball guy and is our best offensive rebounder hands down.  He took his man off the dribble with both hands and he's well-coached in attacking the basket off a few bounces--he seems to really know his limitations with handling--3 bounces.  Anyone who has ever coached the game has to really love that.  There is nothing worse than watching a kid outdribble his skillset (see God's Gift and Dom Pointer). 

I like his shot mechanics...I've been saying that all year.  He will be a good secondary outside option for wide-open looks when he gets his feet set ala Paris Horne.  He needs to work on a more fluid follow through, but I suspect the coaching staff is all over it for the offseason. 

He's a starter...the type of kid that you never pencil it at the beginning of the season, but is always in there and you always want on the floor in close games.

I think his basketball career will end up paying him more than his baseball career. 

Great athlete with a ton of potential but I think his brighter future is in baseball at this point and if the Reds see the same thing this summer, I don't think he comes back.

If shows real potential this summer they are going to want to him in Arizons Fall league and that will be it for SJU.

6'6 wing players that can jump and play with both hands are all over the place...  Garrett might have the worst weak hand for a Div I player I have ever seen, he cant do anythiong effectively with his right hand.

Nice role player on a good team. On a good team you can't have Pointer and Garrett playing this many minutes. They will either split time or whichever one develops offensively will play more than the other. Pointer will not be playing baseball in the summer. If i had to bet I would say Pointer moves ahead of him.

I think Garrett can be better than some are giving him credit for.  Role players don't go for 20/10 as freshmen in less than half semester of play against a Big East team in late season.  He has a lot of tools.  His weak hand needs a ton of work as does his shooting, but his progression has been staggering.  He's already learned how to use more space on offense and use his tools to blow past his defender at ease.  He's only played college ball for a month or two.  I think he can be a lot better than just a role player if he stays a few years and develops.  Baseball will be the deciding factor in all of that.

Which is my point. He has talent no one is saying he doesn't. For a 6-6 wing player he also needs a ton of work. He supposedly throws 96mph and is going to be playing in the minors and has a million bucks waiting for him. Baseball AT THE VERY LEAST is going to cut into his basketball work. Giving only half his attention to basketball (understandably so) will hamper how much he can improve his shooting, ball handling, weight gain and right hand.

Best play of the night for Amir, in my opinion, was when he faked a hand-off to D'angelo on the left wing and blew by the defenders on the switch and went strong to the basket.

Amir looked great last night.  And his baseball career is far from a sure thing.  If I remember correctly he hasn't played baseball since he was sophomore in high school right?    Now granted, the Reds saw enough in the one tryout to draft him on talent alone.  But I wouldn't say it's a forgone conclusion that his future is in baseball. 

And fwiw, he's easily my favorite player on this team.

Desco...if I'm not mistaken he played travel ball right up until before his senior year of HS. And while anyones baseball career is far from a sure thing, the Reds didnt just draft him...they drafted him and gave him a million dollars to sign, which is the equivalent of first round money. The last two picks in the first round didnt even get that much. Not saying that makes him a sure thing, but the Reds didnt just take a flyer on him. They made a major investment in him and they're going to want to see a return.

Football and baseball were my two sports as well.  I had offers in both, but baseball is the least predictable sport for future success because the skill level is so much more important than athletic ability.  That really scared me about baseball.  Even 2nd and 3rd round pitchers are a mystery.  Garrett will have his work cut out there.  I suspect he has seen his largest check from baseball.  I think he could be an NBA player after three or four years.  There is nothing Postell has that Amir doesn't.  Also, a good Euro league could pass that baseball check in 2-3 years.

Remember whats really impressive is that he has only played since 2nd semester began. Hes another player w heart and determination.

Yes I believe so. I just hope it doesnt  take up his whole summer.
