Come on.  This staff knows how to recruit.

We didn't lose McCullough to Syracuse but SJU wasn't visible enough.  Sometimes you just get beat.

Again of the 5 final schools for Kyle Anderson UCLA was probably the LEAST visible of the 5 during his recruitment the summer of 2011 and guess who ultimately got him?

We were not visible up there at all to start the school year.  Cuse was all over him.  It was a calculated decision.  The hands off approach works for some but not for all kids.  Some enjoy the love and attention.  Usually younger kids who haven't lived thru the process as long as upper classmen.

It is interesting how the past 2 days we've been on the road.  Prior to that it was awhile in terms of our guys being visible and reported.

Visibility had zero to do with why Kyle chose Ucla.. Ucla was also the furthest away from Kyle.  Kind of hard to be super visible when you are across the country.  Nobody said the staff doesn't know how to recruit... But it would have been nice for them to put the full court press on Whitehead and Mcculough .

Maybe it's me, but I think McCullough would have probably chosen Cuse even if we bunked with him.  If he liked SJU that much, he would have picked us.

You may be right... I'd like to see more of what the staff did tonight though.

But that is my point, visibility is not always the reason for ANY kid.

I am not sure the staff believes Whitehead has serious interest in staying home or perhaps is the right fit for SJU.

You can argue that perhaps they could have recruited McCullough harder but keep in mind he was a 2014 kid so the recruiting on him by rule is a little more limited then an incoming senior.  I honestly think the kid was headed to Syracuse as soon as he took that summer visit up there for their camp.  Boeheim runs a great camp in the Dome with top kids from all over the country.  It is a big selling point.

Remember one thing, Lavin does not chase kids.  He generally targets top kids and is trying to build a program that consistently recruits top 100/75/50 kids.  But at the same time he won't chase a kid that he thinks he ultimately will not land.  Even then he is going to lose kids (see Wainright).

Fair and well known points with regards to Lavin's recruiting style... Simply not true however in the case of Whitehead.  He was at one point very open to coming here and his mother likes Coach a great deal..  Fwiw I am hearing now that Louisville is coming on strong for him.  Once again I'm not saying the staff is doing a bad job in recruiting. .. But most kids do like the attention and when a kid that good plays in Brooklyn why not put on the full press??

He loves Syracuse a lot as well.  Again speculation and I know the retort always is he is so good he fits into any team, but there simply might not be mutual interest at this point on the part of SJU.

I attended the game tonight at Loughlin.

Few notes:

Carrington had about 20. Few jump shots, but mostly points in transition. Finishes well at the rim. Needs to work on his righty handle for sure.

Severe had about 20 as well. Kid can shoot it and had a ferocious dunk in transition. He can play.

The guy I walked away most impressed by was Mike Williams. He can shoot it, penetrate, and did a tremendous job defensively on Severe in the 2nd half. Really liked his game.

"With Rutgers’ Mike Rice and St. John’s Steve Lavin among a bevy of college coaches courtside, Khadeen Carrington netted a game-high 29 points and had six rebounds and four assists for Bishop Loughlin (13-3), ranked No. 5 in New York City and No. 12 in the Tri-State."

I watched game and have seen him play four times. He would be a solid addition IMO.

Zags;

Coaches Flock to See Khadeen Carrington
January 26th, 2013 11:01 am
A number of coaches flocked to see 2014 Bishop Loughlin star Khadeen Carrington Friday night.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard went off for 31 points but his team lost a nail-biter to Christ the King, 73-72.

St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin and two assistants, Rico Hines and Tony Chiles, were both in attendance, as were UConn assistant Glen Miller, SMU assistant Ulric Maligi and Florida State assistant Dennis Gates.

St. John’s has limited scholarships for 2013 and is focusing on Jermaine Lawrence, whom Lavin and Chiles watched in his debut Thursday, and Philly Vaux Roberts guard Rysheed Jordan.

But come 2014 and ’14, the Johnnies will have plenty of scholarships to give.

“They are highly interested in my son,” Lima DuFont, Carrington’s mother, told SNY.tv Saturday.

“They already had a high level of interest in Khadeen.”

UConn is also highly involved and Carrington attended the recent Louisville-UConn game.

“He just went to watch the game,” DuFont said. “[It was] good.”

Florida State is also involved, DuFont said.

Carrington holds offers from Pittsburgh, UConn, West Virginia, Cincinnati, St. John’s, SMU, Villanova, Iowa State, Rutgers and Seton Hall, among others.

Said his mom: “He’s going to focus on his season and coming to the end of this season he’s going to definitely start thinking about doing some unofficials and taking it from there.”

I only count 2 scholarships in 2014 (Bourgault´s and Achiuwa´s, if he doesn´t play this season).

That is true but we should expect a few of our guys to leave early or a transfer could happen

But for 14 isn't it a little behind in the process?  The names on the sites (and we know they are not the end all be all) are retread names we know of and also no we have no chance with and/or stopped pursuing.  Yea there are some 15 names mentioned mostly and there is time there but 14 seems to be a real question mark outside of Carrington

We are way behind for 2014 kids and only guy we seem to be watching is Carrington. What happens if we don't land Lawrence or Jordan and lose Dee and Karr after next season? Just a hypothetical thought?

Anyone care to guess why we are so behind in 2014?  All eggs in the CM, Whitehead, Carrington basket.  Too much energy in 2013?

We seem to be recruiting one year at a time.  Understand that out of the gate but now its put up or shut up time.  Time to get ahead a bit.
