Too bad. Bruce Weber is a good man. Hard to win in the Big Ten without cheating. I would be pretty proud of being a St.John's fan, if what Bruce Weber did over a 7-8 year period would be deemed unacceptable. He will find another job, because overall, at UofI, under him, the Illini weren't bad.

Looks like Bruce Weber is out at Illinois as expected.

Andy Katz of ESPN said that Weber told him by text that he was fired.

I do think Bruce Weber is a good guy and a pretty good coach.  But it is funny that his best years came with players that were mostly holdovers from the Bill Self era.

Although I love how you imply that only "cheaters" win in the Big 10.  Thus negating anything good that Self did but also impugning the integrity of Izzo, Ryan, Matta, Painter etc.

Eric Gordon was a huge blow to their recruiting, but it true, he was handed a great team.

Yes but that was Sampson at IU and we know the integrity level of that paper bag.

Its funny how Poison doesn't respond to Fordham correctly calling him out over his blanket indictment of all those Big Ten coaches.

There's nothing to respond to. The Big Ten is dirty. Always has been.

The Matt Doherty watch at SMU will extend at least thru next Tuesday.  SMU AD Steve Orsini sits on the Selection Committee and his Indy thru the weekend so he won't be able to meet with Doherty until Tuesday to decide his fate.

One interesting tidbit.  Doherty is only signed thru next year.  Which means if they decide to bring him back they would almost have to give him an extension so he has some job security to recruit.  That sounds unlikely which might mean he is already a goner.

BTW-An interesting sidebar on the possible repercussions if Doherty gets fired.  Specifically about Blaise and Bernardi.

Keep in mind SMU is set to join the Big East next year-2013.  Does that mean that the Big East intra-conference transfer rules including players who have signed valid NLI's does not apply for another year or does apply immediately?

If it applies immediately then guess what, Blaise and Bernardi would not be allowed to attend another Big East school if they chose to ask for and were granted releases.

Just something to chew on.

I wouldn't think it does.  When did they become BE officially, before or after signing day.  They both verballed well before that official date for sure.

I don't think that would be the issue as clearly SMU as of now is not part of the BE and both players have signed.  However in a year BOTH will be in the Big East and since that is going to happen would the League simply treat them as Big East signees NOW and thus apply the rule accordingly.

Or SMU could say that we are not releasing you to a team that will be on our schedule in the near future (specifically future BE opponents) thus you need to look elsewhere.

Assuming of course they ask for and get their release.

I wouldn't if I were him.  That job is a wasteland for basketball.  Very difficult.

BTW-Tom Izzo is not someone who holds things in.  I remember when Bob Knight was fired Izzo let IU have it.  And apparently him and Weber go back a ways when both were Big 10 assistants, Weber with Keady at Purdue and Izzo at MSU.  But suffice it to say he was none too happy to hear his buddy Weber was terminated at Illinois:

Isn't Osbourne the AD there?  He won't spend $$ on a BB coach.  All about the football team in Nebraska.

I agree. One of the toughest big conference jobs, and no real home turf to draw recruits from. I wouldn't leave a $400,00+ job for it, but I'm not him.

As for Izzo, there was a good article not too long ago about how he gave Weber a lift on MSU's private plane because Weber was on a 3:45 a.m. flight. Izzo was losing a recruiting advantage by giving Weber a lift, and he pretty much said he wouldn't do it for most coaches, but he knows that Webber does it the right way.

I hope Weber doesn't potentially see going back to S. Illinois as defeat, because he kicked ass there and they loved him. I'd go back if I were him.
