Sendek can't last much longer, 3 players leave in a week and rumors Carson could be next

Arizona St just pushed out the head of their athletic department today.  Mr. Sendek just checked his briefs because I think something just happened....LOL!!!

There's some truth in  the old saying a bird in the hand . . .   And having stability is a good thing as well.  I think there's only a few folks who truly relish the nomadic lifestyle of changing coaching jobs.  While we're on that subject I read on ESPN that Larry Brown would be interested in SMU.

Sounds more like Brown wanting then SMU expressing any interest.  Don't see it.  Brown is 71, SMU needs a youthful coach who can recruit.

Yeah, but it doesn't take Larry Brown long to get results.  He's had two college jobs.  In his first, he took then to the national title game in his first year.   In his second, the final for in his 3rd, and National Champs in his 5th year.

Of course, he LEFT both jobs just in front of mobs with tar and feathers, and both programs with 1 year tourney bans.....NCAA stripped his UCLA team from the record book - so that title game "never really happened".  Didn't have the cajones to strip the title from Kansas tho, even tho THOSE violations were more egregious....

I think you would also agree SMU is NOT UCLA or Kansas.  Brown can coach but he is 71 and not sure if he can recruit at this level at his age.

Danny Manning to Tulsa is a little surprising.

Danny Manning to Tulsa is a little surprising.

Scott Sutton of Oral Roberts pulled out leaving DM as the choice.  I think Scott thinks he has a shot at the KSU or even Miss St jobs.

Remember Self use to be at Tulsa so he probably has some pull there.

Kansas assistant Danny Manning is now the new Tulsa coach. Should help crgreen's UCLA team with Shabazz Muhammed & Tony Parker. People are saying Manning was close with Parker

Always hated when ppl brought up his name for us.  I would have picked a new team to root for.  Thank god he never got a sniff.

Interesting since he is an example of what I talked about in a different thread of a coach jumping at another job that on the surface seems at best a lateral move.  Remember when he left NC St for ASU in 2006.  Most think he was pushed out even after 5 straight NCAA appearances.  Natives were getting restless with his inability to beat Duke and UNC and compete at an elite level.  He saw the writing on the wall and jumped.

He might need to do that again if given the opportunity.

Any admin on a similar level to ASU who gives him a shot after this is nuts IMO.

This is a difficult thread to follow.  It has two really good topics- coaches turnovers and college eligibility.  I wish the moderators would spilt them up.

I bumped into an ASU trustee this week end.  He told me he believes the reason Coach S.  did not get the boot is because the AD is trying desperately to hold on to her job.  ASU has had a mess with both its baseball and football programs.  Dropping another coach would be another indicator of her inability to right the ASU sports program.  There is big time pressure to force her out.  It is only a matter of time before she goes.  If it is soon, expect Coach S to go as well.  If not, Coach S. has a year to prove he belongs out here in the desert. Coach probably should not buy a large container of sun screen.

It did not take long, discussions on Saturday and firing on Tuesday.  As I mentioned earlier, no surprise there.  The AD's 7 NCAA titles were a nice accomplishment, but they were not in the big three ASU sports.

The feeling here is to keep Coach S. for one more year.  However,  I hear Coach S. would like out to pursue some of the other coaching openings.  A financial plan may be worked out.  Coach, it is probably better for your resume to use the change of AD as the reason for leaving, rather than being fired next season.
Some action is expected within the week, if at all.

Discuss all you want about Coach S.'s ability to coach, but I was disappointed in his inability to work with his players.  I am not sure schools will line up for him.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

There is some underlying stuff at Illinois.  John Groce seems like a solid hire but he is not going to be well received apparently.  Some in the Chicago high school area don't know him very well and apparently there is some internal politics at Illinois.

There was a lot of pressure on AD Mike Thomas to hire an African-American coach.  In the last year he has replaced his women' BB coach, football coach and now Men's BB coach.  When he hired the football coach two members of the BOT, both black, voted the contract down.  They did not think Thomas did enough to hire an African-American.

So this time in addition to going after Smart, he pursued Leonard Hamilton and Lorenzo Romar and all 3 said no.  Not sure what else he can do.  He obviously cannot make these guys say yes.  In addition by all accounts he was offering someone like Smart a HUGE salary upgrade as well as conference affiliation upgrade and he still said no.
Correct fordham.  Eamonn Brennan just did a piece related to the difficulties going on over @ Illinois for their AD, and talks about the tough AAU recruiting scene in Chicago.

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/56646/this-is-why-the-illinois-job-is-a-challenge

An excerpt:

" It started obviously enough: Illinois wanted Shaka Smart. But when Smart said no, Illinois AD Mike Thomas -- in an admirable attempt to hire the school's first African-American head coach -- reached out to Alabama's Anthony Grant, Florida State's Leonard Hamilton and Washington's Lorenzo Romar, none of which, as should probably have been expected, had any interest in the jobs themselves. (All of them have their high-major programs on upward trajectories at various stages of their tenures. Why would any of them leave?)"

&

"And that, in a nutshell, is why the Illinois job wasn't enticing enough to land Smart or Stevens, why it isn't good enough to poach any of the best possible African-American candidates from their solid gigs, and why this well-intentioned coaching search has turned into such an unmitigated mess: You have to deal with Chicago. Specifically, you have to deal with the city of Chicago, where AAU and high school coaches wield influence like ward aldermen, where everything -- more so than most areas of recruiting, which is saying something -- is about relationships, about power dynamics, about balancing constantly conflicting interests. Groce hasn't even been hired (yet), and already the Chicago prep guys are lashing out. Who wants that headache?"

Nebraska is letting a JUCO center out of his LOI. Says he is a top 25 JUCO with 3 years of eligibility left. I wonder if we will try to get involved.

I mentioned him when Sadler was fired.  We were mentioned with him at one point.  Thought it might have been end of Norm tenure though.  Also not  sure how he would have 3 years left because I thought he prepped already but who knows.  There was some video on You Tube of his NEPSAC days but wasn't too impressive.

Yes he was a target of Roberts a few years back but fell off the radar

Nope. He thinks he can cash in on his exposure from Espn in recruiting. Guy is a criminal and a joke.
