Maybe Amir jumps much better from a running start than flat footed like most seem to do. One player we had was the reverse-Ed Searcy-unreal straight up vertical jump but much less from a running start. Remember the claim of Louisville's Darrel griffith having a 44" vertical.

Wasn't a "claim" by Dr. Dunkenstein  -  it was a fact.
Don't believe I said nor did i mean to say Griffith was the one asserting the claim. Guess I should have been more clear and used that instead of of. Nor was I challenging the claim.

For those who care about this stuff!

“@STJ_Basketball: To clear something up, @Amir_Garrett has a 32.4 in standing vert & a 41 in w/ a 3 step approach. A 2 inch imprvmnt since Dec. alone! #

“@STJ_Basketball: #STJBB Strength Coach Patrick Dixon always talks about Amir's impressive recovery ability, and his +40-pound improved bench in only 4 mos!”

Do believe this kid will really fill out over the next year and grow into that frame.
BTW, Amir's 19th birthday today.

interesting yet kinda counter productive to read the amount of speculation that goes on on these boards. especially when there the ones that get the scoop first.

Not saying its the coaches.  But its not hard for someone in athletics to chisel out a bit of their day to see whats going on with the fans of their product.  Redmen was and still is and Jungle has also become a good discussion within the walls of the campus on the corner of Union and Utopia.

no doubt about it its excellent coffee pot discussion within the atheletic dept. and so forth, but i was more interested in the personnal whos job title would entail to read message boards and take notes. little do we know we could be entertaining the likes of SJU Admin under whatever alias picking our brain for our perspective and sources pertaining to the program.

Also, this wouldn't have occurred to me if the article came out a month ago, but being that the NFL draft was all over ESPN last week...

The article makes a point of noting Amir having a 32 inch vertical,  and our trainer even called him a physical freak.

For what it's worth, the WORST vertical jump by any CB, WR, or RB in the draft  was 31 inches.   I'm not making that up.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft/combine/_/id/92/sort/vertical

So, either they test the vertical jump differently, or Amir really isn't jumping that high.

Yea surprised as well. Maybe football uses a step with their vertical testing, while amirs 32 inch is just from the stand still. I would think his would be higher

Our own Iman Shumpert scored the best vertical jump (no step) from the 2011 NBA pre-draft combine camp with 36.5 inches.   I think Jordan was rummored to have scored a 48 inch jump, but I'm not sure that's true. Amir's 32 doesn't seem freakish at all in comparison.

Actually, the NBA pre-draft measurements showed Shumpert with a 42" in Vertical.

Best they ever recorded was Kenny Gregory back in 2001 witha 45".  Nate Robinson's tied for 2nd witha 43.5.  Vince Carter is 4th with a 43 even, tied with Jamario Moon.   Shumpert's 42" places him 9th - tied with Josh Selby, Patrick Ewing Jr, and....Jordan Farmar???

The all time recrord is a disputed 60" by a 5'11 frenchman named Kadour Ziani.  He has an UN-disputed vertical of 56"...

Here's the link to the pre-draft measurements database:  http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?year=All&sort2=DESC&draft=&pos=&source=All&sort=12
cr - they didn't measure it pre-draft back then, but didn't a SI article state that David Thompson had a 48" vertical?

Not so sure. I go back to Mel Davis, Ed Searcy, Beaver Smith, David Russell, Willie Glass and may be forgetting one or two others.

Of course, it ISN'T about what your vertical TESTS at, but what you can actually do with it it game situations.  NO ONE was more shocked than UCLA fans when it was announced that the player with the best vertical at the 2006 pre-draft was Jordan Farmar with a 42".   We've had players who tested a foot less than that who got much more effective USE out of their jumping ability during games that Farmar had/has shown...    I mean, the camp measurement for RUSSELL WESTBROOK was 36.5"

Add Derek Brown.

One of the best plays I ever seen on any level: Round 2 '93 NCAA STJ v. Ark.   Early in the game. Razors are extendin like they use to. Cain has the ball halfway 'tween the 3 pt line and halfcourt. 40 feet away Derek Brown starts a backdoor cut from the 3 pt line. Cain chucks the ball from way, way out. Evrytin in sync. DB rises, catches and destroys the rim. Alley beauty.

I remember that play, Derek really could leap and when he got hot from the outside he was pretty deadly. Often though he did not play complete games and his stats suffered from it.
