“@ESPNAndyKatz: Central Florida and Donnie Jones will get their Committee on Infractions/penalty answers Tuesday at 11 a.m. NCAA gives 24 hour notice.”

“@ESPNAndyKatz: No league enjoys a new member with sanctions.”

I'm not even enjoying them without sanctions.

People have to be realistic. The BE was left for dead and wasnt in a position to raid the big12 or ACC.. UCF was a good pickup, descent in FB anf improving in BB, Lets hope the sanctions dont hurt them to much.

So they are bottom dwellers for a little while.  Every conference has some. It won't be for long.  They have a lot of potential in both bball and football.

I'm very realistic. Big East football will be an ugly mishmash of crap most years. I would have preferred a football-only school from out west, and a basketball power invited to balance it out. The only school I wanted to see in the Big East less than UCF was East Carolina.

I certainly hope UCF turns into something real when up against the big boys night in and night out . . . but I have serious doubts.

ACC lacrosse is sooo strong that they very well could finish either at top or bottom of the conference any year.

Syracuse is an ELITE lacrosse school and always will be. Upstate NY is one of the lacrosse hot beds in the country and they will always get their fair share of players. Going to the ACC will only make them more attactive lacrosse option.

ACC is very top heavy in Lacrosse with Duke, UVA, Maryland  & UNC being consistently Top 25 teams. Last year, the Big East had more schools ranked in the Top 30 then the ACC.

Actually PMG, the ACC isn't top heavy. Those ACC lax schools you just mentioned are the ONLY ACC schools that play lacrosse.  I take it you don't follow lacrosse?

I have been become more interested in lacrosse recently because it is so popular where in live in NJ (chatham) and my neighbor is getting recruited to play Div I...

Lacrosse is a great sport. Played from 4th grade through college.  Growing up on Li, it was just the thing to do. No one played baseball. Well , people played baseball, but all the athletes played lacrosse.  Have a ton of friends and ex teammates that play professionally still, although they are getting a bit long in the tooth...

Re: UCF, they're the same with 1-yr sanctions or not. Does anyone remember sanctions 3 years down the line? No. Is USC one of the best teams in college football despite getting hammered in the Reggie Bush "scandal"? Yes they are.

"All the athletes played lacrosse."  => In talking to a few former Div. 1 lacrosse players through the years (rec ball, softball, etc.), what they told me is there are many good athletes that play lacrosse that lacked one tool in a variety of the big 3 sports to make it in high Div. 1 ball, but were able to play Div. 1 lacrosse.

The athletes who couldn't continue hitting or pitching a baseball as they moved up in age, took up lacrosse as an alternative because they usually weren't good enough for baseball.  I don't want to start the "hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports" discussion again, but it applies to what I've heard from former Div. 1 lacrosse players.

Same goes for football and basketball. If most lacrosse players had the tools to be high Div. football or basketball players, they would have stuck with it.

That being said, I've been following lacrosse since the 1980s when the Nelson bros were dominating Westchester County lacrosse at Yorktown HS.  As some of you might know, the Nelsons, along with Brad Kotz, were responsible for creating the strong Syracuse teams (Natty '83, Finals '84 & '85),  that were the forerunner to the Gary Gait era.

Simply a total falsehood. On long island, lacrosse is a long time tradition for much of the island.  Kids were never choosing lacrosse over baseball because they couldn't hit a baseball.   That's pretty absurd.  Kids don't choose to play sports at that age based on their D1 potential.   I grew up playing lacrosse and football.  I just hated baseball.  I still hate baseball.  I chose sports based on what I enjoyed more and what I was exposed to growing up.

If you're a Canadian, you probably grew up playing or watching hockey.  Canadians don't all gravitate toward hockey because they don't have the chops to play other sports.  Lacrosse has some of the best athletes in college sports at many of these programs but the elite often still gravitate to the most popular sports in America like football.  The highest level athletes still play sports like football because of the extensive programs and popularity in America.  That is obvious.  Lacrosse is still a sport in its infancy as far as highlevel development goes.  If college lacrosse and pro lacrosse were as popular as football is in America, the best athletes would be playing lacrosse.

this thread has taken a turn to another subject unfortunately.  however back in the mid sixties i could not make varsity baseball at west islip [reigning five time state champs this year] and played lacrosse.  tried to make cornell freshman team 1966.  not successful.  1970 team with mike french won ncaa championship.  coach ned harkness was one of few coaches to win ncaa titles in two sports...hockey[ken dryden] and lacrosse.

When I was at Cornell 80-84 Lax and Hockey were still the big sports on campus and continue to be though hoops made a bit of a splash under the last coach as we all no doubt recall.

Different sports with different skills.  In fact Evan Royster, Penn State's all time leading rusher I believe, said that the only difference between football and lacrosse is that football is more weight lifting.  Doubt he was afraid to throw a baseball.

Re this whole lacrosse v other sports thing.    I don't think either requires better skills, or has better athletes, it's simply a preference for young kids.   But the tri-state area adds an interesting twist, because generally speaking baseball players from the North East find it difficult to get high major / professional offers because they can't play year round.  And it's difficult (although not impossible) to compete against guys who play year round in Arizona, California, Florida etc.    But there are always exceptions, Mike Trout is from NJ, Matt Harvey is from CT.    Exceptions to the rule; much like golfers from the north east.

Therefore if you want to get a scholarship, in many cases it makes sense to focus on lacrosse.  And parents and coaches know that.  Assuming you're just as good at both; you're practically guaranteed a high offer if you're all-county in lacrosse in the tri-state area, where as I know many guys from HS, or whom I've met later in life,  who were very good baseball players but received only low D-1 or DII offers after being equally successful.

Basketball and football are a different case all together.   Nobody who is a high major recruit for basketball or football turns it down to play lacrosse.   If they do, they are lieing about what their offers really were in football or basketball.
