Congratulations to him. I'm glad that he's getting the respect he deserves. His basketball mind might be better suited for the NBA. As a recruiting advantage, it looks good to have a Johnnie as a head coach on an NBA squad (regardless of whether it really is or not).

Good for him. I hope he gets it. Than drafts moe first overall!

Anyone know of any possible replacement if in fact he does get the job?

Michael Jordan is too stupid to hire Mike Dunlap.  Don't worry.

Congrats Coach Dunlap on getting a look. Clearly, Redmen fans are not the only ones who know the high level caliber of Coach  and teacher of the game that we have in you.
Good luck on your interview!

He is great guy and very nice recognition with this interview but I just cannot see him getting the job.  Don't get me wrong, he is brilliant and he did work for George Karl in the NBA (Karl being a UNC guy like Jordan which is probably why he got the interview because Karl thinks so highly of him) but he has been in the college game as an assistant for several years now.  How many college assistants get hired directly as NBA head coaches?  Can you name any?

NBA head coaches usually come from 3 pools: 1) Current NBA assistant coaches 2) Current or former NBA coaches or 3) Current elite NCAA head coaches (Pitino, Calipari, Larry Brown, Lon Kruger etc.).

I am more worried that Coach Dunlap maybe hired as a top assistant on an NBA staff perhaps by the Bobcats.

Well, I think you are probably making sense, Fordham.  If MJ was inclined to hire, I don't know, his buddy Patrick Ewing, I'd imagine you'd want a brilliant tactician to partner with someone like Ewing, with the entire NBA community knowing you are the brains behind the operation, so that if you do well, perhaps you are heir apparent to.....the Nuggets job when Karl retires, probably Dunlap's dream job.  Or some other NBA job.  Hopefully we don't lose him, but if we do, good luck to him.

They already are a disaster.  Can you imagine the public outcry if they hire a current college assistant coming off a 13-18 season who has never been a major college or NBA head coach as their new head coach?  Qualified or not I don't see it from a purely PR standpoint.

How many college football assistants/coordinators get elevated to become NFL head coaches?  In other words Nick Saban's defensive coordinator at Alabama becomes the HC with the Miami Dolphins.  No way.

I can't see it.  I would be worried that he could go back to the NBA as an assistant.  Gives a good interview, he does not get the HC job but maybe Pat Ewing on the advice of Jordan hires Dunlap as an assistant.  And no college can match what an NBA team can pay an assistant.

If Ewing gets the job I would think they hire a veteran NBA head coach to be his lead assistant.

Whatever they want....LOL!!!

Again no matter how much a college coach gets paid they cannot compete with the NBA or NFL.  Take Nick Saban at Bama.  Highest paid NCAA coach.  But if an NFL team really thought he wanted to coach again in the NFL they would have ZERO trouble paying him more then what Alabama could.  Same with Calipari at Kentucky.  As rich as UK and their boosters are there is no way they could ever match the deep pockets of an NBA owner.  In other words Saban or Calipari would never turn down the NFL or NBA because of LESS money.

I'm not worried about him getting the head job. I'm worried about him being an assistant for the Bobcats.

I agree with Dave and Fordham on this one, I'm more worried that he gets hired as an NBA assistant.

It's a great recognition for Dunlap to interview for the job, that in itself puts him in position to be mentioned with other jobs in the future.  Both head coaching positions (college and nba) and associate level jobs in the NBA which he might be a leading candidate for.

Getting the interview is part of the process.   But I don 't think he's landing a head job in the nba soon.

I do think it's only a matter of time before Dunlap leaves though.   I think we have him for two more years at most.   Which is fine, he's entitled to take the next step in his career.   I wish coach D all the best of luck with this interview, and any others he might land.

One of the reasons I think there's a good chance an NBA team hires Dunlap as an assistant eventually is because of all the camps/clinics he does.
He's constantly giving clinics for other coaches; at all levels, and from most reports, he's very impressive.

You have to figure through all that networking, and all the fellow coaches he's impressed, a lot of whom probably keep in touch, it's just a matter of time before someone calls him when they need a top assistant.   Just my perception, others might know more about Coach D's reputation in basketball circles, but that's the sense I get.
