Great news for St John's and for Dunlop.  Hate to see him go, but looks great for St John's

Lavin certainly has a plan for this.  And the gig pays well.

Does the whole offensive and defensive concept that we've recruited players for, and begun teaching these kids go out the window now?  Do we have to hire a coach that runs the same style?

No, I thinknwe'll keep a lot of it.  Lavin ran with the same style of players at UCLA.  Our offense is a hybrid of Pete Newell's San Francisco Dons Reverse Motion offense, not some Dunlap Special.  We might not play as many crazy matchup zones all the time but I don't think we'll change all that drastically.  It will be different for sure, without such a great mind on the sidelines, but as I said, it is Lavin that stirs this drink. He will make a good hire that has plenty of X's and O's ability.  I also think Lavin is not devoid of these types of skills himself.

Wow...sorry to see him go but congratulations to Coach Dunlap!  He deserved a D-1 coaching job a long time ago.  Do we go after Barry Rohrssen?

“@GoodmanCBS: Mike Dunlap appeared to commit career suicide in '08 when turned down Arizona interim gig. Now he's Bobcats head coach- http://t.co/0wKgeNui

Stunner, have to eat $*** on this one never would have thought he would be hired from where he was.  Again not because he wasn't qualified but because his current position does not lend itself to be hired as an NBA HC.

I think after Sloan pulled out and they cut it down to Shaw and Snyder my guess is both perhaps wanted a lot of $$$$ to compensate for such a lousy job and Jordan started rethinking Dunlap.

Good for him though.  Great guy well deserved.

We'll be OK.  Be interesting to see who is hired.

Anybody who was actually worried that Mike Dunlap, no doubt a terrific coach, was actually going to be hired by Charlotte needs to stand up and give 5 realistic reasons why they actually thought that was possible.  Again there is no doubt in my mind that George Karl reached out to fellow UNC alum Michael Jordan and recommended he talk to Dunlap.  But no way was Jordan hiring a college assistant coming off a 13-19 season.  No way no how.  Again perhaps as an assistant but even that I am not worried that much.

Again NBA coaches usually come from one of 3 pools 1) Current or former NBA head coaches (Jerry Sloan is being seriously considered) 2) Current NBA assistants-Patrick Ewing was considered before he was told no and 3) Current elite NCAA coaches.  It is why Calipari is always rumored.

The gospel according to Fordham! Only kidding.

I gotta eat crow on this one too.   I love Dunlap, but I thought him interviewing was just a favor from somebody to get his name out there.
Didn't think they'd hire a college assistant right to the nba.

Good for him though, he deserves it.  And I am SURE that Lavin knew this was a possibility and had been networking with other assistant coaches for the last year or so.   Even if he didn't get the Bobcats job did anybody really see Dunlap being here more than another 1 year?  2 at the most?   Probably not.  So I think there's a backup plan, or plan(s) probably.

The dollar thing is  a great theory, but I think it was much simpler than who wanted the less dollars.   I think it was which man is the better coach.   Dunlap hands down.

Good analogy by Goodman

“@GoodmanCBS: I had limited dealings w/ him in Boston, but the guy I would compare Mike Dunlap to is Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. Smart, quirky, obsessive.”

“@ESPNAndyKatz: St. John's trending a bit now in the NBA with good buzz on Moe Harkless and now an assistant landing an NBA coaching job.”

There's an assistant at Kansas who would be perfect for the job.

Congrats to Dunlap.

Pretty big loss though. Hope we can get a good replacement. At least it gives St. John's more and more guys we sent to the NBA. I mean our assistant just became a head coach for a NBA team. That has to count for something.

Congrats to Coach Dunlap!!  A well-deserved nod after the year he put in for us.  Classy posts from Fordham and Desco on the matter given how they shot down the idea of Dunlap's hiring.  IMO, this only reaffirms that SJU is the launching pad for all things headed toward the NBA!!!

Would decimate people on the recruiting trail with Lavin, Rohrrsen and Chiles...

Too much of something is never good. I fear of this move.

Yeah, I tend to agree.  I think maybe an X's and O's guy in Dunlap's mold would be better.  Just don't know much about who and Rohrrsen is a compelling option.
