Lav isn't going to rush this decision. He has plenty of time to do his due diligence. It's not a cookie cutter process and knowing Lav he's going to bring in a guy thats going to wow everyone.

Posited on Redmen - If the due diigence takes time - there's a lot of logistics involved in getting the RIGHT guy, and it IS "late in the offseason" already - might Coach Keady move from Consultant to Assistant for the coming season if the right guy isn't immediately available?

I would love love love that. I wonder if Keady would do it if Coach told him he didn't have to be on the road recruiting any more than Dunlap was.

SOOOO.....

Mike Dunlap has the #2 and #31 picks in the draft.   WE know Mike better than just about all of those shocked Bobcat fan's out there.   With  Charlotte needing virtually EVERYTHING, who do you think Mike will look at with his picks?  Does he seem like a Drummond guy? MKG? Beal?  Robinson?  Barnes?

Hey - certain guarantee Moe CAN'T drop lower than #31!   ;D

Great day for the program. Good for Coach Dunlap. I really am kinda shell shocked because I honestly didn't think he had a chance, but that's awesome. Does he make more money than Lavin now??

This is brutal loss for our program and may cause Lavin to rethink a lot of what he is doing moving forward.

Coach Dunlap taught all of the defense and the zone we have played the since his arrival is his baby.

You would have to think George Karl was very helpful to Coach Dunlap in this process. I would have to think Karl put in a huge good word for his former assistant coach and we all know how the UNC guys all lean on each other for advice/guidance.

I knew that Coach Dunlap wouldn't be with us for too long, but never thought he would get a head gig in the NBA.  Although, St. John's will miss him it is great honor for him and for the program.  Another great day to be a Johnnies fan

Dunlap did huge majority of the X&O work for this program so its not like you can just replace him with a new Coach.

Lavin will have to make decisions about the way the team plays moving forward and what they are going to focus on in the defensive end. They have lost the guy that was the teacher of their entire defensive philosophy.

Will they stick with the zone as much, what if the new assistant is more of a man to man guy. A lot of things can change very quickly with a new Coach involved....

Charlotte should trade for more assets.  A veteran and a pick or multiple picks and a player.  I would try offering Houston the 2 pick and 31 for their two picks on the teens and Lowry or Martin or even scola.  Worth a shot.  Then take moe with one of the picks!   The draft is deep between 2 and 25, but 2 is not a no doubter like 1 is this year, so I say deal it if someone willing to pay for it.

Great article written several years ago detailing Coach D's strategic strengths and impact.

“@PeteThamelNYT: Who is Mike Dunlap? I wrote this profile three years ago back at Arizona. Interesting guy. http://t.co/jM1wwC0B

“@DalyDoseOfHoops: Mike Dunlap still the #1 trend 12 hours after @Rick_Bonnell broke the Charlotte Bobcats hire. That's the power of #stjbb for you.”

Lav on twitter stating he has an " elite list of coaching candidates" how can you not love this guy and what he has brought to this program. I can't wait to see who he brings in, regardless if its a big name or a lesser known asst we know he will make the right choice. Love the buzz that the Dunlap hire and Moe positioning himself well in the first round for our program!

Coach talks MJ into trading down their #2 pick, moving to Houston's #14 and #16 picks.  He selects K Marshall at 14 and Moe at 16.  Houston selects Drummond.

I don't think Lavin is so stupid to have placed every iota of reliance on Dunlap and not have a clue what Dunlap was doing here.  People selling Lavin a bit short here.  I'm pretty sure Lavin is aware of what Dunlap has been doing here for the past 2 seasons as is Rico Hines, Tony Chiles etc.  Dunlap ran several zones and certainly was the defensive coordinator.   To think that this thing can't run without Dunlap is silly.  Lavin advanced in the NCAA's to or past the sweet 16 five times and was a Baron Davis injury away from the national championship without Dunlap on the sidelines.

Lots of programs out there winning without Mike Dunkap.  I have no worries here because Lavin knows how to run this ship.  He'll hire the right guy.  We might do things a little bit differently on the defensive side of the ball depending on who comes on board, but let's not overblow this.  SJU will be fine moving forward.

Trading down for a veteran player and lower picks would be smart.

The top programs in the country shuffle staff all the time. Do you really think so little of Steve and his crew, or is it you job to panic and come up with as negative stuff you can think of?  SJU is now a program that sends players and coaches to the NBA. Not long ago no one wanted to come here. We got top coaches and players for the coming season. Please, lets not go back to whining.
