Just thought of Nuri...

I laughed.

I had the exact same thought last night haha!      He had no idea how good he had it.

Its not whinning or complaining but the program is replacing the on the court brains of the program and if you think differently you are naive.

I never said it can't be done I just said it could lead to a rethinking of how things are done. Different staffs take different approaches. Lavin has in his own words been the"GM" of the program. When GM's brings in new coaching staffs, things tend to change....   can be good or bad.

3-5 years down the road, assuming Dunlap does well, is he heir apparent to George Karl in Denver?

One thing I'll say -- if what everyone is saying is true, i.e., that Dunlap was really the guy who taught and knows our matchup zone, and Lavs decides to go in a different direction, we absolutely have the depth and horses this year to play man-to-man.

Maybe he'll reunite with Nuri at the next level.....

Lol... forgot about this one..  Who knew?  Nuri didn't like Dunlap's style, didn't think it would get him to the next level.  How's that working out for you, Nuri?

I really hope Dunlap and the Bobcats don't draft Drummond at #2. I think that is a mistake. He showed little to me at the college level. Personally i would take MKD or Beal. I also like the trade down idea.

Anybody who was actually worried that Mike Dunlap, no doubt a terrific coach, was actually going to be hired by Charlotte needs to stand up and give 5 realistic reasons why they actually thought that was possible.  Again there is no doubt in my mind that George Karl reached out to fellow UNC alum Michael Jordan and recommended he talk to Dunlap.  But no way was Jordan hiring a college assistant coming off a 13-19 season.  No way no how.  Again perhaps as an assistant but even that I am not worried that much.

Again NBA coaches usually come from one of 3 pools 1) Current or former NBA head coaches (Jerry Sloan is being seriously considered) 2) Current NBA assistants-Patrick Ewing was considered before he was told no and 3) Current elite NCAA coaches.  It is why Calipari is always rumored.

you're probably right that mj asked karl about dunlap..

I have no doubt that is what spurred this as it is an obvious connection.

But again I would have bet anything that Jordan would ultimately go the traditional route (hire a current NBA assistant or current/former NBA HC).

NO self pity--this is a time to celebrate the success of Coach Dunlap.  He is an individual who has worked hard for a long time (54 years old) and he is finally getting the pinacle of his profession (although some would say the Bobcats are the bottom).  He is one of only 30 or so individuals with the title head NBA coach.  Enjoy the challenge coach--I look forward to seeing you coach in the coming year.  And thanks for your contribution to our program.

Lav isn't going to rush this decision. He has plenty of time to do his due diligence. It's not a cookie cutter process and knowing Lav he's going to bring in a guy thats going to wow everyone.
i'm sure lavin wasn't blindsided.  my bet is he already had a plan b in place.

Like other posters, I have ambivalant feelings. I am happy for Dunlap, but I wanted him around for 1 more year, to teach our young pups. He was the XO guy  who complimented Lavin. I wish him luck. We were fortunate to have him as an assistant for 2 years.

Nuri has little to worry about. Remember NBA draft analyst  Ford had Nuri at #40 last season.  :)

Congratulations coach, job well done and good luck.  You stepped in to a tough situation last year and did a great job with a under sized, under manpower team that still gave us moments and glimpses of a bright future.

I wish and pray for nothing but the best for you and your family.

I don't think so.  I think Mike's career will be a series of similar jobs to Charlotte.  Team in complete distress, haveing to almost start over from scracth with young talent that needs developing.    MAYBE Mike will adjust and grow with a team, but more likely as his team have success and the egos of his players grow with that success,  4 or 5 years down the road the brass will look to bring in a "manager" rather than "just" a coach, and Mike will be off to another youthful challenge.

I could be wrong.  I just see, with Mike's personality and history, that being the likely scenario...

Makes you wonder if that's a backhand slap from Karl towards one of the two "finalists" for the Bobcats job, Snyder or Shaw! :)
