Here was the only STJ mention:

Leon (East Meadow, NY)

Why isn't St. John's class rated higher? I think Jakarr Sampson will easily replace Harkless. Also any chance of them adding another big like Michael Chandler or Jordan Dickerson
Dave Telep  (3:17 PM)

St. John's class is appropriately ranked IMO. Sampson is a good player but not sure he can carry the load the way Harkless did. Harkless had a bigger offensive game. Chandler and Dickerson aren't impact guys. In the case of Chandler, he's bounced around too much to be able to count on him until he proves himself as a player and shows some stability.

So now he doesn't think Jakarr is the player Harkless is when last year he had Jakarr rated like 10-15 spots higher?

Chandler was ranked 44 by ESPN for the 2011 class, so yeah, he clearly has no shot at being an impact recruit.  And how does "bouncing around" between schools that he couldn't qualify to get into relate to his game, exactly?

I dont know Chandler well enough to judge his game but by the way he was ranked I would think he would be an impact player when ever he starts playing for a college

Because Moe far EXCEEDED his ranking in his performance.  And per RSCI, Dave had Moe #41 and Jakarr #51 last year.   #41 guys are VERY seldom power conference Freshman of the Year, and one-and-done first rounders.    Guys outside the top 50 almost NEVER are.    Telep had guys like Levi Randolph, Otto Porter,  and Trevor Lacey ahead of BOTH of them.   It's not really reasonaable to expect Jakarr to have the kind of impact Moe had.  It COULD happen, but it's certainly not "historically predicatable".....

I usually like Telep, but those are some piss-poor answers.  10 seconds of footage on Chandler shows he's an impact player.  A case could be made that he's as good as any big man besides Zeller and Davis from the 2011 class. He's every bit as good as Lamont Hamilton--who was an All-Big East selection.  It's also ridiculous to say Sampson can't carry the load like Harkless did.  Telep personally ranked Sampson seven places higher than Moe LAST year and Sampson has an extra year of experience, an extra year of lifting, and he is more suited to play the PF position than the freshman Moe Harkless.  I think Moe was a little more of a scorer and, yes, he exceeded his expectations, but Telep is referring to a recruiting class ranking.  I don't see how Sampson, after an extra year of work, is not well above where Moe was "projected" last year.

This is the same guy that rated Dom as a top 25 player--14 spots ahead of Harkless at the same position--in spite of Dom's lack of a handle and jumper.

Chandler reminds me a lot of Herb Pope before his injuries and weight gain.  Chandler has a LOT better hands than Herb Pope though.  Safe to say that Herb Pope was pretty impactful last season even after lots of setbacks over the years from high school through college.

With all the transfers, isn't it time someone did a comprehensive ranking of all incoming new players, at least at the team level?  Need to consider transfers and jucos in a bigger way these days.  I gotta think someone like Orlando Sanchez should hold the same amount of weight in team by team class rank as a guy ranked ~100.  This kind of analysis overrates classes like Kentucky's and underrates classes like Missouri's and Marquette's (and our this year).

There are just too many players out there and not enough true analysts/experts.  Rivals has a problem now where they fired Jerry Meyer and only have 1 national analyst in Eric Bossi.  Kline is considered a contributor.  In any given weekend there could be 3-4 AAU events going on.  Plus during the season who is where watching what game or mini tournament, usually Juco gets by the wayside.  The sites should hire a JUCO expert however.  Brad Winton is awesome at JucoRecruiting and should latch on with Rivals, ESPN or Scout.  Especially since 5th year prep will be going away in a couple  years and more players will have to go JUCO route.

I hear you, but it isn't an exact science either.  They can use their own HS rankings for transfers and find a way to see/rank the top 25-50 JUCOs.  Just like we look at other team's rosters and size up their "talent" level with by quoting the number of RSCI top 100 guys, these rankings can do something similar and it would be more accurate IMO

I think the main issue that Telep might be missing is that Jakarr won't be asked to "carry the load" that Moe was last year. For most of the year Moe was asked to play the 5 against bigger and stronger opposing players while also leading what was essentially a 2 man offense. He played 36 minutes a game last year and provided around 25% of our scoring and rebounding. I don't expect Jakarr to put up those type of numbers due to the sheer fact that Moe's minutes, shots, points and rebounds will be divided up amongst a group of guys. Branch and a more experienced Phil Greene will make things a lot easier as well. Last year often times Moe was forced to create something out of nothing with under 10 seconds on the shot clock. I don't think Jakarr is going to be asked to do the same this year.

I can't really speak to the comment about Chandler because I have never seen him play. I just hope he qualifies and is wearing Johnny Red come November.
