Sadly, in this day an age, if you aren't developed and ready for the NBa by the end of your sophomore year many look at you as a failure.

Really, this guy was a top 40 recruit and he's a senior....what the heck is wrong with him?  Like that...

Well, in modern times, I'd remind folks of THESE freshman Numbers:  3.4 pts, 0.7 assists, 0.8 rebounds, 45% FGs, 55% FTs, 9.0 minutes per game.     Jumped that to 12.7 pts, 4.3 assists, 3.9 rebs as a Soph.  Some would still call that unimpressive.

I'd tell you what he did as a SENIOR, but he was already 2 years in the NBA as a #4 overall lotto pick by then.   Russell Westbrook.

OT, intersting stat:   This year, first time in NBA history, 2 college teammates finished in the top 5 in league scoring in the same season.   Westy and Love.  Only two teammates EVER to do it before were Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Alajuwon - each finished in the League top 5 scoring, but NOT in the same season.

We should look at these guys as college players and not worry so much about their NBA prospects. Can be a great college player and not make it at the next level-just look at the list of Heisman Trophy winners.

Our own Walter Berry was one of the greatest college BB players and a Wooden award winner but never made it big in the NBA.

Walter's career averages were 14.1 pts and 4.7 rebounds.  Wonder how many people realize his career "per 36" averages were 21.3 and 7.2.   He was very productive when on the floor.... for a  comparison, 1st Wooden award winnter Marques Johnson's career "per 36" was 21.1 and 7.3.   In fact, Walter's per 36 NBA production was SUPERIOR to MOST Wooden-award winners.

Loved Walter Berry, but unfortunately, on the defensive end, Truth probably gave up more points, whether on a per-game or per-36 average, than he scored.

I agree.  After all, there was a reason he didn't PLAY 36 minutes a game!.  Or that his best two years in the league (17 pts a game) were sharing a frontcourt with Artis Gilmore, Michael Thompson/David Greenwood and Ty Corbin, who took up the defensive slack.

But he really wasn't the total bust some make him out to be.  Blazers, Spurs - had he gone to some WORSE teams, he likely would have gotten major minutes (as other similarly defensively challanged players have over the years)...I think he could easily have been an 18-20 pt per game career player.  Still the same player he actually WAS, but the PECEPTION of him as a bust probably wouldn't be as strong.

Of course, I don't consider ANY multi-year NBA career Double Digit scorer to be a BUST.  Too many truyly talented players never even MAKE the league, let alone produce double digits.

You guys probably know better than I do, but I believe he had an EXTREMELY successful Euro career for over a decade after leaving the NBA.

Walter didn't leave the league for lack of talent.   As I recall his points per munute were among the best.  He did make a ton overseas so all's well that ends well I guess.  He was a great watch though.

Agree.  One of my biggest "pet peeves" is that some folks believe that lack of success at the NEXT level somehow diminishes the greatness of a player at a previous level.  That includes for me High School stars who don't make a big splash in college, as well as college players who don't make it to the pros.   Ask me who the 5 best HS players I ever saw were, and ONE of them is going to be a kid named Mark Wulfmeyer.  Never a big deal in college - horrible coaching, so he elected to play minor league ball after only a year of college, was injured in the minors after 3 years, finished out his career in D-III.  But in High School?  The greatest scorer in California history - a career 46 pt scorer.  Absolutely unstoppable.   The fact he was never a college star shouldn't diminish what he was in high school - one of the very best EVER.

The Problem is the HS ranking sites  base their analysis on pro potential I think that should changed , just don't know how those sites would do the ratings though?
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"
