Wow

Love Frank Martin coached teams and love the fact we are playing on campus actually.  Should be pretty crazy atmosphere.

Agree! Martin will also enjoy playing in NY to bolster local recruiting. This guy will turn SC around quickly!

“@JonRothstein: South Carolina traveling to St. John's means @FrankMartin_SC will play in NYC 2X next year. Gamecocks face Manhattan on 12-15 at Barclays.”

Plus if Thad is eligible he gets to return to the scene of many good moments for him.

Wish Cuse and Pitt could leave sooner than later!

“@EditorEdge: Syracuse unhappy with SEC/Big East Challenge, doesn't want to play. Daryl Gross' "reply all" email here: http://t.co/ft0PQCAj. Pitt also mad”

Yea, god forbid they leave the cozy confines of middle of nowhere upstate NY to travel to a tough road game.

JB willing to play a game on the Intrepid, provided it is towed to beautiful, downtown Syracuse!

I like seeing a South Carolina on the schedule. This is a team that I don't recall St. John's ever playing before. They might have, but I don't recall it. It gives the schedule a fresh look with new opponents. I know it is just one opponent, but I like the idea of playing them.

Its not really our choice.  It's part of the BE/SEC Challenge so I think the commissioners or some admin determines who plays who.

We played in the early 70's in the Holiday Festival, when it meant something. They had a local player, John Roche. We beat them. Details to follow.

Played them up in Providence in the Ocean State Classic back in mid 70's also. they had a 6'4 leaper Nate Davis and zoned us all night but we won a close one under Louie and to this day I still think it was the best ball movement against a zone that I have seen us have. We went on to upset the Friars in the final of the 8 team tourney and I a party of one attempted to rush on to the court but was corralled by a cop and prevented from doing so. Back at the hotel  we had a gathering attended by George Johnson and ref mickey Crowley. George related that he almost lost it while attempting a free throw and having the S Carolina cheerleaders under the basket turn their backs to him while he was at the foul line and flipping up their skirts to reveal GO COCKS on their panties. True story as they say.

Also beat them in the Garden when they had 6'8 Alex English and coach Frank McGuire stated that Louie always had players in the ice box (meaning a transfer or freshman to unveil and in this instance he may have been referring to George Johnson who he said that if he had than they would really be something. Geesh guess my memory ain't that bad sometimes.

It's hard to believe but the '72 Holiday Festival was actually a 10 team tournament. We along with another local team that I can't remember had to play a 4th game against a historically black colleges that the festival wanted to include thanks in part to pressure from the NY Urban League. St. John's beat Grambling (Willis Reed's alma mater) and had close victories against Tennessee and Michigan with future Knick Campy (not Cazzie) Russell before beating Frank McGurie's South Carolina team 86-79 for the title. The game was not that close. Billy Schaffer was tourney MVP.

Was a freshman at St J and watched the games on a new thing called cable television on I believe  channel 6 and that tourney turned me on to St J's hoops Dec of '72. Loved the way our underdog team played with great heart and Billy Schaefer remains one of my all time fav redmen. Boy could he shoot and i think his 24.7 pts per game that season is still the all-time high at St. J's. Have barely missed a home came since.

I'd rather road trip to one of these SEC schools, than play at STJ... just sayin.  you know, check out the scenery.  Hopefully Marillac can join us,  we can just pick up his scraps.....  ;)
