Second start 1 2/3  3 runs 2 k and 2 BB 3 hits

At this very early stage of his baseball career, his allowed runs and hits don't mean as much as velocity, movement and command of his pitches (although, the better he excels in these categories, you'd think the less runs and hits he will give up).  It would be interesting to see a scouting report on Amir at the end of this season to find out how high they think his ceiling is.
Hopefully his ceiling is higher in basketball and he plays so well that he becomes an NBA prospect. :)

Who knows, Amir could be the next Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders; straddling the NBA and MLB.  Now that would be cool.

fascinating to watch his career development.  I am sure the Reds have a number of innings he will pitch in his first year in baseball and they also look at pitch count.  Texas Rangers big believers in developing arm strength and focusing on # of innings someone pitches in a year as they develop.  Even Mets are doing it with Wheeler; shutting him down after a specific Number of innings.  I am looking forward to keeping tabs on Amir's development as it will give incite into player development in baseball.

Yankees did it with Hughes and Joba.  Strasberg and the Nats.

The Rangers are often criticized though for ignoring pitch counts.

Must of meant the Nationals in terms of inning and pitch limits because Texas is actually known for throwing those inning limit theories out the window

Right.  Although curious whether Texas augments its philosophy in light of the fact that Feliz had TJ surgery this year, Colby Lewis is out for the year, and Holland spent time on the DL too.  My guess is no, because the Ryan/Maddux philosophy is that pitchers need to throw to develop arm strength, that learning how to pitch with fatigue helps prevent injuries, and that you have to treat each individual pitcher differently, because one guy might expend more in 85 pitches than another does in 130 (agree 100% with the last notion).

sorry about Texas--Nolan Ryan was brought up throwing every 4th day without a count and that is their approach.  it will be interesting to see what has more success.  In the old days (before all of us), pitchers threw and threw.  the record holder threw over 500 or 600 innings.  we may well never see a 30 game winner in a season nor a 300 game winner in a career again.

Won't see a 30 game winner because of 5 man rotations.

Yes Amir, congrats and good luck.

Yankees did it with Hughes and Joba.  Strasberg and the Nats.

And it worked so well for Hughes, Joba and Strasberg.  Joba and Strasberg have had arm surgery, Hughes a dead arm for most of last year.  I think shutting down Joba in his first full year set him back.  The guy was on a role at the all-star break as a starter, then they moved him to the bullpen to limit his innings and then tried to build him back up.  While he has shown glimpses, he hasn't been as good since IMHO.  The Yankees have been horrible at developing pitchers over the past decade plus which makes you think maybe they should re-think what they are doing.

The Rangers are often criticized though for ignoring pitch counts.
It will be interesting to see what happens with their pitchers on the major and minor league level over a few years utilizing this approach.

I knew that Lewis was out but hadn't realized that Holland has spent time on the DL.   As I stated in my earlier post, it will be interesting to see what happens with all their pitches with this philosophy.
