Not sure Rohrssen is the x's and o's guy we need to fill the void.  Funny how I'm reading mainstream articles about who will be hired as SJU's new assistant headcoach. I don't think this type of news coverage ever existed pre-Lavin.

Blast from the past, Tom Abatemarco.

Spent 1 season as an assistant under Looie.

Who Replaces Dunlap at St. John’s?
BY ADAM ZAGORIA ON JUNE 20, 2012, 8:52AM

With Mike Dunlap now the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin has a decision to make.

Whom does he hire to replace Dunlap on a staff that also includes Tony Chiles and Rico Hines as assistants?

Here’s a list of people in the mix to replace Dunlap on the Johnnies staff. Several college head coaches could also be considered:

Tom Abatemarco, Colorado assistant

Frank Allocco, De La Salle head coach

Paul Biancardi, ESPN recruiting analyst

Jim Boylen, Indiana Pacers assistant; former Utah head coach

Tim Grgurich, Former NBA assistant coach

Gerald Madkins, Former UCLA player and NBA scout

Darrick Martin, Former UCLA and NBA player

Lane Odom, Former college assistant; son of former coach Dave Odom

Tim O’Toole, ESPN analyst, former Fairfield coach

Barry Rohrssen, Former Manhattan coach

Earl Watson, Former UCLA player, Utah Jazz point guard

What's Brian Nash up to these days? I remember people thinking he was a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Not sure what he is up to but from everything I am being told Lavin wants NBA background for replacement and there will no no internal promotions.

I don't know much about this guy from Pacers but he sounds like an incredibly good fit.

Boylen in a nutshell:

-Played at university of Maine.  Runner up POY in the N.A.C. to the late Reggie Lewis of the Celts. (must have been quite a player too.)
- Michigan State Asst. under Jud Heathcoate
- coached in NBA as an assistant for 13 years for Houston(Olajuwon, Yao Ming), Golden State, Bucks
- Associate HC under Tom Izzo (one of top assistants in the game at the time)
- Head coach of Utah Utes and was let go after great season followed by two poor ones where whole roster turned over.
-Pacers Big man coach.

It seems he'd like to get back into college coaching and really loved his job at Utah.  Was disappointed to be let go .  To me seems like a resume' that fits what Lavin wants perfectly.  Lavin will be the one to decide of course.

Stan Van Gundy or Mike "Deuce" Jarvis II

Stan Van and Lavin would be pure gold!

And that Rothstein article answered my question from earlier about budget/resources available for Dunlap's replacement...

"Sources have confirmed that the budget at St. John’s is done for the next fiscal year and Lavin will have all of the monetary resources he needs to replace Dunlap on his staff with someone of the highest caliber."

So that's good to hear.   Sounds like we can expect someone with bonafides.

Soo, did Zags just read this thread and make a list of names from who we've mentioned?   It certainly seems that way.

Gerald Madkins, Earl Watson, Tom Abatemarco, O'Toole etc were mentioned on this board?  When?

Not O'toole, but Madkins, Watson and Abatemarco - yea.
Redstorm80 posted them last night, not sure where he got his info from.   But then Zags went up with an article this morning listing them.
Look one page back in this thread.    Maybe it's a coincidence or they have the same source.  That's not impossible.

You are going to laugh when you see this but he posted a ZAGS TWEET with those names and then subsequently Zags wrote an article AFTER his tweet.

Did you think they would use the opportunity of Dunlap's leaving, to save money on his replacement ? This is not your grandma's SJU or for that matter oldfans.

Do I think Lavin would save money on it?  No.    Do I think Monasch and Fr H would tell Lavin 3 years ago he has $1 mil to spend on assistants and staff to get him to take the job, but then change that budget a few years later?  Yes, unfortunately I do think that's how they might operate.
Luckily it didn't happen though haha.   So it's a moot point.

Takes money to make money. I think STJ finally sees that.

Well put.  The commitment SJU made to Lavin and the basketball program doesn't expire just because a staff member leaves.

Otherwise you risk losing Lavin himself.  Part of the reason he took the job is SJU would not spare anything in resources to allow Lavin to put together the staff he wants.

This is all true but its not just the school that has made the financial commitment to the basketball program. We have to be honest and say the school alone would have never made this level of commitment to the basketball program.

bingo!

it's funny to see every name in the book thrown out there.  that way, someone can claim credit for being there first.  i mean, van gundy?  how about both brothers? at the same time.

That logic assumes a level of stupidity of which not even Harrington could be accused. Especially after seeing a dead program being revitalized, and the benefits thereof. Once you make a committment to a big time coach you don't submarine the program at the first opportunity. If you do you won't ever get a coach of substance to pull you out of the ditch. They got lucky, once, with Lavin. It wouldn't ever happen again.

They need to bring in Timmy Doyle.  The prodigal son returns.  He is smart and he has a TV pedigree
