Does he have any highly regarded recruits on his HS team? :)

Thanks. Don't think we need another 6'5 type for next year. prefer power player or pt. unless he is really good or we lose some guys.

I trust Lavin's judgement on this for sure.  Guy has compiled an amazing record as a HS coach.  He at one time ran the football offense for Notre Dame, so tactics is something that is built-in for him.  Really sounds like a Lavin-type guy as he is also motivational speaker and Lavin utilized Dunlap a lot in a mentoring role with the players, building that on/off court chemistry.  Would be interesting hire for sure.

No NBA experience?
I thought Lavin mentioned this would be a focal point?

I like him. Sounds like a solid XnO/fundementals guy. Cant argue with his record and you know lavin loves those west coast connections.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

Joe See was another recent player.

His teams are known for their great defense. It's not unusual to see their opponents held to the 30s. He's also well liked out in my neck of the woods.

I read on one north Cali message board complaining that Allocco's teams play stall-ball type bball, but fantastic defense.  Lavin does much of the offensive stuff for us and I'm pretty sure Allocco knows all about up-tempo ball so don't think it would slow our style down any.  Just a piece of info I read.

I trust Lavin, but there's something to be said for guys with experience at the highest levels.   Some of the D-1 assistants that are still in the mix like Abatemarco and Odom seem more appealing to me, as would a guy like Madkins who was a Lavin player and NBA scout, or a Biancardi with recruiting expertise and D-1 head coaching experience.

Don't really understand why Earl Watkins is still being mentioned as a possibility.   Last I checked he's not retired.    But who knows.

Either way I have faith in Lavin and co.   But going into this process I was convinced Lav would grab an nba assistant or notable D-1 assistant.    Apparently he's thinking outside the box.   Which shouldn't surprise me, I know.

De La Salle basketball is absolutely nothing like De La Salle football -- he's not getting great players, so he has to play defense and stall-ball. But he gets a bunch of nobodies to go 27-4 every year.

FYI

THEDeeJenks My sources tell me that @TonyLuftman is currently mulling an offer from @STJCoachLavin to replace Mike Dunlap on the coaching staff #stjbb

Tony Luftman begins his first season as the TV Studio Host for the Trail Blazers. Before coming to Portland, Luftman spent the last two NBA seasons as the TV Sideline Reporter and Radio Host for the Memphis Grizzlies. In spring of 2007, Luftman made his national television debut on CSTV when he covered college softball on the network.

Before making it to the NBA broadcast ranks at age 29, Luftman spent six years covering college sports as a play-by-play voice and studio host with stops at Virginia Tech, UCLA, Cal State Northridge and Vanguard University. In addition to covering Virginia Tech, Luftman hosted his own daily radio sports talk show in Blacksburg. He also served as a fill-in play-by-play broadcaster for the Roanoke Dazzle of the NBA Development League.

The Los Angeles native earned his degree from UCLA, where he was a four-year team manager for the men’s basketball team and a member of the Bruins’ 1995 NCAA Championship team.

Okay - I know Tony from both his days as UCLA manager in the 90s, and his time here in Blacksburg with the Hokies.   This "offer" makes zero sense.  NO coaching or recruiting experience?   As a coach, he's a pretty good broadcaster!    In the photo of the '95 National Champs, he's far left in the front row.   That BABY over his left shoulder is Steve Lavin.

There is some pretty fair coaching talent in that photo:   Current St. Johns Head Coach Steve Lavin,  to his left, current NC State Head Coach Mark Gottfried, to his left Jim Harrick, to his left, University of Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar.    Up at the right end of the top row you have #5 Cameron Dollar, the Head Coach at Seattle University, at the other end of the row, #11 Tyus Edney, current DOBO at UCLA.   #24 in the top row is Bob Myers, GM of the Golden State Warriors.  And the Huge guy in the middle wearing #25 is GM of the Czech National Team George Zidek.

Allocco ran/spoke at a youth basketball camp every year called EXCEL in New Providence NJ. Real good speaker/motivator. Will be a good mentor for the young guys making the adjustment from hs to college. Was an intense guy when it came to his bball and most have some decent coaching knowledge to consistently produce winners, even if it is on the hs level

Tony Luffman makes sense to me if we were looking for a head broadcaster not top assistant.
