He has 3 assistants, a DOBO and several others on his staff.  I presume one of those would be the canddiate.

Next question

We have two assistants currently on staff..

Chiles main career work has been recruiting specialist and he serves that role on this staff.
Hines is a player development specialist and does a great job there.

Neither has had the type of role that Dunlap had on a staff and its the most important job during the season. The coach that does this job is usually responsible for one of the team game plans too.

As for the DOBO doing this, I think Hicks could do it but it would not make sense for the person doing the advance game prep to not be able to implent it in practice. So unless he plans to elevate Hicks to a full assistants role he needs to hire and X&O coach to work with him.

Coaches like Allocco and Boylen were being sought after because they are known as preparation fanatics.

You have no idea what he is looking for nor do you sit in on meetings.  You are taking biographical information you read somewhere and assuming you know everything about someone and then further assuming you know exactly why they would not be a good fit.  You are not conducting interviews.  More importantly they have all been around people who have done those things.

And he has 2 now he will have 3.  I was presuming his next hire thus when he has a full staff it will include 3 full time staff members.

Biographical information...   what are you talking about, all I did was state the main roles of our two assistant coaches. Last year Coach dunlap did all of the advanced scouting, video and game prep work for this staff.

"Being around" people who have done a job, makes someone qualified to do the job..? Would you trust your buddy who works in an accouting office as a clerk to do your taxes.? If you were in legal trouble and needed a criminal defense lawyer, would you trsut someone who specializes in contract law to defend you..?

The staff needs someone who specializes in the all the little things and prep work. We have a big hole in the staff right now and hopefully it gets filled soon. The team has a ton of potential and could be a huge surprise if the pieces come together.

Like I said, there was a reason Lavin wanted coaches like Boylen and Allocco for the opening. If it was an easy role to fill, he would have made his life easy, promoted Hicks and hired a new DOBO.

Guys-I think some of you believe that because Mike Dunlap had such an impressive resume as an assistant that anything short of that will be a disappointment.

I think you need to divorce yourself from that notion.  Mike Dunlap was as much about luck as anything.  Quite frankly someone with his resume belonged as a head coach already.  Then Ernie Kent gets fired and he fails to land his dream job at Colorado and lo and behold he becomes available for a 1st year coach at SJU Steve Lavin.  That doesn't happen everyday.

And again I absolutely believe that people like Dunlap were brought on board as much for logistical reasons then simply game planning and X's and O's.  Dunlap with his background allowed Lavin to ease back into coaching and not lose focus on recruiting after 7 years off the bench.

He needs to find someone who is competent and who he feels comfortably with and if that means taking a chance on someone without the biography of a coach like Coach Dunlap, so be it.

I didn't say it qualified them, I used that as an example of something you don't take into consideration.

Just a side note - one of the responsibilities of a Head Coach, sometimes apparently forgotten, is to DEVELOP his assistant coaches, just as much as it is to develop his players.    I think it's bad for the program if after three seasons it turned out that Rico is still "just" a development coach, and Chiles is still "just" a recruiter.   As with your players, as a HC dealing with your assistants you teach, you observe, you encourage, you reward, you discipline, you evaluate and you promote.  Bruin fans thought Jim Harrick was nuts when he placed "untested" 3rd year assistant Steve Lavin in charge of the Bruin Defense in 1994.  His resume at that time was basically "gopher".   Then Lavin's defense up and won a National Championship a year later, and Steve was bumped up two spots to lead assistant that following year.  A year after that he was interim head coach taking HIS team to the Elite 8, and as a relative newbie to recruiting, landing the #1 recruiting class in the country.

Gotta trust your head coach.   If he brings in someone it will either be because he trusts their Xs and 0s (no matter what their resume), or because the trusts the Xs and 0s of someone already on the staff...Guys, he's not going to offer the job to someone he hasn't sat down with, hashed out everything, picked their brains clean, and come to an informed decision.  If you think WE'VE got a lot riding on this selection, keep in mind how much HE does (and is KEENLY aware of it)....

Maybe coach is just holding the spot for Dunlap as you know there is not a long shelf life coaching the Bobcats. He might be available right around the BET

But realistically, don't you think the Bobcats will be thrilled with another last place finish and a chance at the #1 pick next spring?   Gotta think Mike's pretty safe for a couple drafts..uh, er, SEASONS.  :)

I'm thinkin Slice was offered a job before the Dunlap hire. If so, it's at a recruiting position, yes? Just me thinking, coach Steve wants a guy he can think of as family, and gonna be good with the kids. If coach is the top coaching coach, I think thats no problem for him and should not be for any of us. Just wondering, is there anyone here not happy with the Lavin hire?

I completely agree but that doesn't mean either of them can handle the job of doing the advance scout during the season. The both could have become better X&O guys being around a guys like coach Lavin and Coach Dunlap for the previous two years.

On most staffs, the guy who does this job is probably the guy who the head coach trusts the most when it comes to what happens when the ball goes up in the air....

Huh, what. Coach hires  Xs, Os, guy, or anyone he sees fit to enhance the program. He runs the program and gets to make the call. Some here seem overly concerned how coach going about it, and how it turns out. Why should he come under scrutiny after whats been accomplished in 2 years. Thats why I ask if any here not happy with the Lavin heiring.  Is his ability to coach the team a concern to any?

Who has said he'd be higher in the food chain?   Wow.  Folks are taking the "replacing Mike Dunlap" pretty litterally.   As in hiring a new "associate Head Coach".   I haven't read that title proposed for ANY of the names mentioned except the guy already in the freaking Hall of Fame.

We're allowed 3 assistant coaches and we currently have a vacancy for 1.   How the hierarchy shakes out is an administrative decision by the head coach, still to be determined - so far as I can see....

Agree completely...

I would love to see Coach Lavin go hire a guy like Matt Grady from Manhattan, he knows the advance scouting role in and out, works super hard and would be a huge asset to the staff. Although I am not sure he would leave the side of a rising star like Masiello at this point to be the #3 assistant on a Big East staff.

We all know Abe likes the X's, as in XXX-rated entertainment.  Not sure about the O's, and you'd probably need to pay him in singles.
