Herb must feel the need to turn things around quickly. Hope these guys help open up the O.

“@DougHaller: ASU expected to add Portland Trail Blazers assistant Larry Greer and former NBA coach Eric Musselman to Sendek's staff sometime next week.”

Coach S. is toast.  He is still in place because ASU replaced the AD and both the baseball and football HCs.  His former assistants saw the hand writing on the wall and already jumped ship.  Too bad, as Coach S. is a nice guy, but has major problems in both coaching and player relation skills.

Amazing thing is, his last 3 jobs, he was Mac Coach of the Year in 1995, he was ACC Coach of the Year in 2004, and was Pac 10 Coach of the Year just two seasons ago in 2010.

Also need to remember this is Arizona State - in the 20 years before Sendek, they'd won 20 games 2 times.   In his 5 years, they've won 20 3 times.   They'd had 14 LOSING seasons in the previous 22 years. and were something like only 39% wins over that period, and are at 54% with Sendek.

ASU fans are taking themselves too seriously.   That program was never a destination for basketball players.  Sendek isn't perfect, but he's done well there.

So much Doc Rivers in Darrick Martin! Just prepping for a JR comparison!

“@JonRothstein: Darrick Martin is now the clear cut favorite to replace Mike Dunlap at St. John's, per a source. Still no timetable on an official decision.”

So how do you guys feel about Martin?     Maybe there's been a lengthy discussion about him, but I can't remember seeing one.

Don't know much about the guy but two things I do like are 1) he comes from Lavin's tree/connections, and I think everything else being equal its good to show loyalty and build trust with your staff, 2) he has NBA connections as both a player and front office scout - I think college guys respect that.  Can never have too many nba connections in the program, that'll always help recruiting.

As for his x's and o's acumen?   I wouldn't know.   But again, as Fordham and others have pointed out - we have a head coach already.   Not every assistant is going to have a Mike Dunlap resume.

All I need to know about Martin is that he was an overachieving point guard for many years in the NBA, with that knowledge he should be able to see the floor from both ends of the court. I would expect Rico to have a bigger coaching responsibility with Dunlap gone.

Ok, so it looks like we have some closure on this.   Thanks for breaking the news Paultzman.
And good analysis Ted about the pg mentality... lets hope it's true.

Glad to have him on board.  Great to have Associate HC in place entering the school year and ready to get this young guys moving.  Could pay real dividends getting him in now and at least getting into the heads of our young guards and helping them succeed.

Dunlap may have been the first assistant, but he did not have the title "Associate Head Coach".   His title was Assistant Coach just like Hines and Childs.  I am assuming (no old jokes please) Martin title will be Assistant Coach also.

Well that is the spot we're replacing so I was assuming. Doesn't matter what you call it.  Assistant Coach is fine.

For those who think I may overstate the level of Lavin animus on the UCLA forums - a poster (NOT myself)  this afternoon reported that St. Johns and Steve Lavin  had replaced Mike Dunlap's vacated spot on the staff   with a former Bruin - Darrick Martin.  Here are the actual responses to that post:

LUVTHEMUSTARD:  Is Lavin back to Coaching??

UCLA91:  Did he ever start?

BRUINLARK:  Darrick Martin and Rico Hines?  He's rebuilding their backcourt! :(

UCLAFANATIC:  And we thought Saia was a bad hire.  One giant step backwards for St Johns.  Loses experience and credibility.  Although Martin does have tons of years with the Clippers to look back on.

MIKEJW:  Agreed, what a disaster, lose an NBA coach off your staff, who was basically running the proogram, and replace him with Martin? Wow, they are gonna fall apart fast......Lavin won't last two more years.

Understand, this was a thread simply noting that a past Bruin Great had landed a Big East Coaching Gig!

One of the thinss I really enjoy on these St. Johns forums - a similar occcurence here would have brought a host of congratulatory posts for the player   = THEN it MIGHT have eventually evolved into some Norm bashing (if there was in some way a link to him), but congratulations FIRST!

shouldn't they be more worried about alleged recruiting violations with they're super class.

So far there are no alleged "recruiting violations" involving UCLA  - Players are being investigated for north carolina and New York businessmens buying plane tickets for unofficial visits to Duke, UNC and Florida, and financial support to Shabazz's AAU team (which is coached by the North Carolina' guys brother).  Both are supposedly longtime friends of  Ron Holmes, dating back to his playing days at USC and in the pros.  Holmes is Shabazz's father.    Tony Parker has been cleared by the NCAA, Jordan Adams was never involved.

for those who worried that the new hire would lead to dissent...it just seems that coach knows what he's doing and has all bases covered.  a natural born leader.  this guy will do for st john's basketball what giulliani did for times square.  greatness, that sort of lost its way, and restored back to greatness...and, perhaps, even better.
