there's nothing wrong with the midnight madnesses the school has held recently...except the loud hip hop "music" sucks a big donkey dong.  you may as well bring in strippers.  they'll attract a crowd.  who says there should be a concert, anyway?  if yes, put real talent on the floor.

we have some exciting players coming in.  get the frat boys away from their bongs by promoting them on campus.  is there still a school newspaper???radio station?  promote.  promote. promote.

Agree on all points.  Gman will attest to this, but the fraternities and sororities at some schools mandate their presence at such events.  No reason there shouldn't be tons of students.  I think a better idea is to have indoor/ outdoor campus party.  They have done this before by closing off in front of Carnesecca and having tents, music, games, food.  Culminate that with the intro of men's and women's teams.  Make it all first come and free for students, then  first serve for a few bucks a piece for other alums and fans.  Need to make it a big event where crux of the event is the students.  The rap thing is old.  The even needs to be a big party for the students on campus and a reason for students to come out of their dorms and attend.

Heck, when I was at SJU we had a "spring fling" in the lot with beer trucks, and roped off area wi bracelets for students that were of age.  It was fun.

A fall festival with mm being the night cap would be great. Do a soccer game. Have some junk food stakes and games. Then have Lavin and co rock Tue place at night. Make it a school spirit day and not just bball.

That's what it should be.  Fall Fling type of event where the entire campus wants to be there.  They don't even need to drag out the event indoors with tons of announcers etc.  make it about the students, sports and school.

If I'm not mistaken, I heard Wainright was coming? And to jump in the discussion here, there is no doubt that midnight madness is for current students and not the 45+ crowd. Obviously the more the merrier from all fans, alumni, and students, but let's be clear that the emphasis is on the students, not the party like it's 1975 crowd. By the way, what kind of music did you guys think would be played? Basketball and hip hop are attached at the hip and you are in Queens! Can you imagine Billy Joel music in the background  :2funny:?

With that said, we should get as MANY people as possible to go! Whether you are 100 and on life support, middle aged alumni, or current students, go go go! By the way, does anyone know if there will be free giveaways and if you can come later than 7?

There are two rumors going around.

1) There will be a mystery visitor and

2) It won't be a mystery visitor but rather Baldi dressed up as Norvel Pelle.

Sounds great. Would like nothing more then to see 7500 students battling for the 5500 or so available seats so us old fogeys get turned away. Make it happen.

St. John's student here. There is a good amount of student interest about they event, but it also comes down to the school.  You have student groups that receive funding and should focus their efforts on this, but neglect it.  As has been previously stated, there should a full day of events prior to Tip-Off.  There is a "stormfest" during the first week of school that would be a lot more exciting if held on Oct. 12.

Others are doing what they can.  For those attending, WSJU (the student radio station) will be doing a live broadcast from 5-7pm outside Carnesecca on the evening of Oct. 12.  So, right there, there will be more going on than in the past.  There will be giveaways and interviews as well.

Lastly, regarding the beer thing, I wish it were still how you all say it was regarding the bar on and events.  Now, if you get caught with a beer on campus (21 or not), you may as well be a felon.

I know the beer isn't coming back.  Definitely should move Storm Fest to coincide wi midnight madness.  Make it a campus party.  Maybe even in the future, schedule a soccer game that afternoon and make it a sort of homecoming.  No better time.  Early October is great in NY most of the time.

Are there going to be free giveaways? This is crucial to attendance. If you really want to bring all the students out, give free custom "Midnight Madness 2012" sweatshirts to the first 5,000 or whatever. Make them look cool. Maybe in addition to that give out SJ banners and schedule magnets. We have to start getting bigger names for concerts as well. Bring in Nas (Long Island City, Queens native) and others of his stature...he has a ton of pride for his stomping grounds and I'm sure something could be worked out. The problem is that we are signing acts who are one hit wonders like Chiddy Bang and "hype men" like Vado. We need a legend. Or even J Cole...he is getting huge plus he is a SJ alumni.

Another idea for giveaways could be giving out a SJ tote bag filled with a rolled up free SJ tee shirt or replica jersey, a poster, a schedule, and maybe a mini basketball. The more products with your school's name out there, the more pride there is. When you wear it outside of campus people take notice of SJ.

my girlfriend can be seen in some of the episodes of that show this year. She's worked on it 5 or 6 times. Lobby scenes of the building. She plays one of the building staff
