What would a basketball only conference look like?
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:31:13 PM »
Removing all schools that play FBS football what would make a great basketball only conference? Here are the obvious:
DePaul
Georgetown
Marquette
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
Villanova
Xavier
UMass

Who could be added to increase the RPI of the conference? Otherwise non-conference scheduling would be very important for NCAA seeding.

Butler? That is a nice conference.

Can't have just 2 west coast teams like that.  If you want west coast make it big 18 team league with east and west divisions.  That would be travel hell for those schools.

The only problem is that a basketball only cross country conference would mean hell for the other sports.   St Johns and Seton Hall don't want to send their tennis teams to play Gonzaga or St Marys.

It's not impossible, but I think that makes it more difficult for the west coast teams.  Locations you can reach by bus, like Xavier, are more likely in my mind.

If you split it up then your making only a few trips out west.  More feasible if its massive 18 teams split 9 and 9 instead of just throwing in Gonzaga or St. Mary's with all the East Coast schools.

I think you would see the Catholic schools try and form their own hoops league...

This would be the best basketball conference IMO.  14 teams, two divisions, only 3 road games on the opposite coast per year...

East -

St johns
Nova
Gtown
Providence
Hall
Xavier
Butler

West -

Marquette
Depaul
UNLV
Gonzaga
St Marys
SDSU

If you are going that far west, I'd see if BYU wanted in.

SJ, GTown, Marq, Temple, Nova, SH, RU, Xavier and Depaul. 10 teams. I could care less if the "football" schools want to leave at this point. Notre Dame was only renting. We knew that. They are meaningless.

Temple is football school.   Them and RU are going to want to be part of something football focused.

Rutgers and Temple would have to find a place for football.

St. Bona could fit in somewhere ... they have a decent basketball tradition

Much like Syracuse, Temple and Rutgers think they are football schools. Having a team makes you a football school, but in way are those programs football schools.

We knew this was coming, can only hope the "powers-that-be" were prepared.

I think the Catholic core schools also get to keep the Big East name.

We keep talking about who we are going to add. That is why the BE became a bad conference. Once these teams leave, the best move is to do nothing. Once we get it down to 8, lock the f'n door, and anyone that tries to leave, shoot them in the back of the head. (metaphorically, of course)
