Georgetown makes no sense by themselves.   If ND joins for football, thats an odd amount of football teams.  At least nova could make the jump to fbs.  Cant imagine gtown would be willing to be the only school without a fbs football team either.

Only schools ACC would target would be Rutgers or Georgetown. A long shot would be Nova but most likely not because they wouldn't accept them in for football. UConn doesn't meet the academic standard for the ACC.

The ACC will add another school, no chance they stay at 15.

As for Big East the key is Louisville. If they leave the conference is toast.

I don't think STJ will get a look...no football.  Meanwhile UCONN positioned itself by upgrading its football team rather than scraping it because they were cheap (see St. John's).  Football is where the money is at...I am very afraid St. John's/Providence/Georgetown and the like will be left behind.

It's not an issue of SJU being cheap.  Where we going to put a stadium?  Cunningham Park?

Duke FILLS MSG as we know.  UNC not quite as much.  I am sure Coach K would be fine playing there...provided he wasnt worried about st johns or syracuse in that particular year.  ;)

DooK fills MSG when they have a Sunday afternoon televised game against a nationally ranked opponent, no argument. Whether they'd fill the Garden on a Thursday afternoon against Clumpson is a different question, esp. where a certain number of tickets are available to the fans of other league members. That said I have no doubt that the ACC tournament would fill MSG; I assume you don't doubt that the ratio of NC to NY fans would be different in Manhattan vs Charlotte. What I'm quite sure of is what Sckricknrisnky would say if you asked him what his preferred venue for the ACC tournnament was - the answer would not be somewhere in NYC. Partly because of the advantages available to him in NC and partly because of his ego - he's heir to tobacco road's basketball legacy, and I don't see him happily ceding that to some carpetbaggers just because New York's Team - that'd be Syracuse btw - deigned joined the league that he's owned for 25 years.

Just out of curiosity, when you say UCONN couldn't meet the academic standard, is that in relation to the university as a whole or just the performance of the athletic programs in the classroom? I was just wondering if UCONN was being passed over in realignment due to Coach Calhoun's recent graduation rates.

Louisville has gone about it the right way -- if there is a right way. They have made clear their intentions to the Big East that they would take an offer from a non-dying conference. That's why I would be less pissed at them than I am about the other schools that left.

It really is just a matter of time before the Big 12 comes calling for them.

....acc would salivate over msg conf title game, or even rotate nyc, dc, atlanta.

I don't know that either Ratface or Williams would salivate over an ACC tournament that wasn't played in NC. Since 1990 only 4 championships have been played outside of NC. Since 1990 one championship played in NC has been won by a team not from NC. This year's tournament - in GA - yielded an ACC champion from Florida. That's not going to be lost on as devious a rodent as is Screwshrenski and Williams may blunder to the same conclusion if somoeone points him in that direction and pushes, because he doesn't seem vert bright. It goes without saying that playing in Greensboro - which has a higher seating capacity than MSG - is a huge advantage for NC and dOOk: 16 championships between them since 1990, 14 won in NC. Whether K and Williams have enough pull to designate venues I don't know and it may be that the exposure outweighs those concerns. But considering the nightly deep throat the ACC will be getting from ESPN I don't think publicity will be much of a concern.
MD and other non-NC schools have been complaining forever about the Tobacco Road advantage.  I'm not sure it'll ever get out of NC more than every 4-5 years moving forward.

BTW, Terps were the non-NC team to win in NC in 2004 as a 6th seed.  It was the Gilchrist led team that beat the 3rd (Wake), 2nd (NC St) and 1st seed (Duke) in succession.

In my opinion there's zero chance SJU is ever invited to join the ACC, or any other non-football school for that matter.
The ACC doesn't need to add a school - having 14 in football and 15 in basketball is fine.  Adding an additional basketball school will only add one more hand that needs to be fed from the conference's TV deal.   Why split the pot with more partners?   Unless adding that team provides more value than an additional hand in the pot would cost.   But no basketball program available provides that kind of monetary value.   Basketball games, even great ones, don't move tv ratings.
Plus, having an odd number of basketball teams doesn't pose the same problem an uneven football schedule does.   They're going to have to move to a format like the Big East has used, and teams won't be playing everyone twice as it is.   The schedule will be uneven whether they have 15 or 16.

I know the sporting news and others have mentioned rumors, but this doesn't make a bit of business sense to me, so I can't see it happening.   Ever.

The ACC doesn't need another football school
14 is perfect - even number - qualified to hold conference championship game
If they were to add another school, it would be a non-footballer w/a strong basketball program to even out at 16
A St John's or Georgetown would be an obvious great fit
We'd be nuts not to go if asked
They'd be nuts not to ask us!!

St John's joining the ACC is almost as ridiculous as San Diego State joining the Big East.

False. Queens is on Long Island which is right on the Atlantic Coast. The Atlantic Coast Conference would make plenty of sense.

St. John's getting left behind and becoming a mid-major is ridiculous.

I honestly think that 1 of 2 things will happen

1. The ACC takes a package of Nova, Georgetown, St. John's if other teams like UConn get raided
2. The Big East survives and is still a major bball conference

No major conference is going to chase SJU, Nova or Gtown. Why would you share major football revenue with teams that don't play football.?

PMG:  Why do they need to share much of their football revenue?  Share everything else (basketball) and give them some token credit for football.   Still a better deal when all is said and done I am sure than staying in the decimated Big East...

Maybe I am mistaken but all conference members share in revenues when a school makes a major bowl appearance and the more teams you have in BCS bowl games the more revenue there is to share.

Unless they accept achools as "basketball only" why would the ACC schools want to add non-football teams to the league and have to give up Bowl revenue....

PMG, I don't know the exact details behind it, but I have to imagine that is not an NCAA mandate but just happened to be how the Big East worked it out.  I don't see why the ACC couldn't come up with a different contractual arrangement that would be acceptable to teams that are "all but football".  Unless it is an NCAA mandate, which I can't imagine, the ACC could agree to anything it wants with these schools.  Just like the ACC could agree to let ND keep its own home game tv revenue if it really desperately wanted them as a part of the football conference.  They won't, but they could.

ND will not share in FB revenue in ACC

True but they agreed to play 5 games annually against ACC teams on national TV. I am not even sure there is any financial benefit to the ND opponents but the coaches will love being on national TV, its free exposure they might not have had.

Small schools with no football don't offer the ACC anything...
