Steve Lavin is a light version of Calipari?

Thought you guys would get a kick out of this.  Someone on the Kentucky board said coach Lavin is a light version of Calipari

No, at relative points in their careers, Calipari is "Steve Lavin Lite" when it comes to recruiting and NBA talent.   In Calipari's first 9 years as a head coach, he had 3 NBA players - Marcus Camby, Lou Roe and Dujuan Wagner.

In Steve's first 9 years as a head coach, he had FIFTEEN - Charles O'Bannon, Toby Bailey, JR Henderson, Jelani McCoy, Baron Davis, Earl Watson, Dan Gadzuric, Jerome Moiso, Matt Barnes, Jason Kapono, Ced Bozeman, Dijon Thompson, Ryan Hollins, DJ Kennedy, and Moe Harkless.   And as we, know, that number is likely to grow, as the Dwight Hardy, Brownlee, Burrell and Horne still have outside shots at making the League from Steves 8th team, and D'lo, Amir, Dom - all could also eventually make it from his 9th.  And heck, there's always Nuri as well  :)

Pt is, Calipari, based on the categories that UK poster chose to make the comparison,  isn't even close to our coach at respective pts in their careers.  Coach Cal didn't have his 15th NBA player till his EIGHTEENTH season as a head coach.

I love Lavin and would never trade him for Cal, but I will say this: Cal would have found some way to get Garrett, Sampson, and Pelle eligible.

I'm not saying we wouldn't have been hit with sanctions four years later, but they would have gotten past the clearinghouse.

Water under the bridge.  I think that was a bit of a misstep with the whole Rise Academy thing, which cost us greatly and set us back.  Part of Lavin and Co. getting back into the game.  Miscalculations happen.  Hopefully we learned from that mistake and are better for it in future recruitment efforts.

These are Norm Robert's players, not TGAPL's. I know he hasn't been very successful on the court at SJ yet but there's no call to bolster his resume by crediting him with Norm's keen eye for talent.

Thanks for starting my Sunday off with a good laugh!

Here's to Lav putting to bed over a decade of ineptitude and embarrassment.  The future is bright

Two words:   Enes Kantor.    Sometimes not even cheating works....even for Cal.

The fact that coach is mentioned (positive or negative) on UK's board means we are becoming relevant

Steve's gotten Moe, Nuri, D'Lo, GG, Amir, Greene, Sir Dom, Obekpa, Sampson, Branch, Balamou, Bourgant, Jones, Sanchez  into SJU.   14 of 16 aint bad either  :)

In fairness to Cal ( I can't believe I'm saying that!), Kanter's problem stemmed from his amateur status, or lack thereof, in Europe.  He played, and presumably got paid, for playing in a professional league in Europe.  Cal's payments to him never came up.

I was a bit pissed at the time, but it's water under the bridge for me as well. I'm not criticizing Lavin so much as I'm praising Teflon John for his amazing ability to cheat -- or rather have other guys cheat for him while he turns a not-exactly-100 percent-blind eye. The players Moose mentioned are the ones I had in mind.

As long as Lavin never gets entire seasons vacated and avoids NCAA sanctions, being compared to Coach Cal isn't the worst thing...the guy DID just coach a national championship team...

they were coached from mediocrity into relevance.  imagine if he had jarvis players showtime and hamilton to name two.

Lavin is an easy comparison to Calipari. Calipari only has the national championship over Lavin but has the allure of Kentucky to help him to his goal. I truly believe that Lavin could achieve what Cal did at Kentucky.

Answer the question, would Norm have coached that team to the tournament and a 20 win season?

If you go to the grocery store, buy the groceries, and then I cook you a delicious gourmet meal, you deserve some of the credit.

Do you really think you're going to get an intelligent answer?
