Youre giving marillac too much credit.  The body shots started with beast of the east taking some off marillac...now i also think these were done against marillacs will but details....

What an idiot.  Our guards are the backbone of the team.  Harrison is  2n Team All-Big East selection, Phil Greene is awesome, and Branch was ranked #51 an has a year of experience.

Who is more awesome Phil Greene or your other long ago favorite Geno. I am not sold on Greene at all or Harrison as a point guard for that matter. Also judging by Lavin's actions in naming Harrison at point and even going so far as to mention Pointer as a point guard I am starting to get concerned about Branch.

For what it is worth I highly recommend Marillac as a drinking partner(at least until things starting getting weird there with Baldi, Kid, Carmine, Dave and Marillac doing body shots off one another) as a guard evaluator, not so much.

Don't be.   If Branch were eligible for 1st semester, the Pointer PG discussion would be moot.   It's simply a fact that we play the first part of our schedule with Branch ineligible.   So who's our "third string PG"  for that period has to be addressed...

G - Greene/Branch
G - Harrison/Sir D
F - Jones
F - Sampson
C - Big O

6th man - Garret... or Sanchez - depending on whether those clowns from the NCAA let him play or not. :crazy2: :tickedoff: :knuppel2:

Anyone that has Jones starting over Garrett at the three needs their head checked.  Have you seen Garrett play?  Have you seen this team?  We will need to cling to Greene-Harrison-Garrett for our dear lives until Sanchez and Bourgault get cleared.   Take away Greene and Garrett and this team wins 15 games.

We need skill players badly.

I'm not saying at the 3, but Lavin said post game yesterday that Jones will start next Tuesday.   I'll see if I can find the quote.
And, I tend to agree with him - Jones deserves to start.     So I think the question becomes do you start Amir or Sampson?

You start Sampson over Amir IMO.

Exactly... both Jones & Sampson will get the nod over Garret. Anyone who doesn't realize that has not seen jones play AND basically has no clue what they are yapping about.. :uglystupid2: .. btw - if u really think this teams success rests with Green & Garrett u have serious mental problems. :idiot2: ... Don't get me wrong, i love both of those kids games... but they are not the TOP of the line talents like Jones, Sampson and Branch... Get a grip maryllac!

I am sorry...I forgot what time of year it was on these boards.  Every new guy is either a first rounder or a diamond in the rough and will be better than veteran players with more experience.  I mean, what good is experience at the college level?  Very little right?  What was I thinking?

Sit tight and watch for when Harrison isn't on and you'll realize just how important Garrett and Greene are to this team.

Marillac pay him no mind. You know his story.
But just curious. Who do you expect more out of this year. Jakarr or Amir?

Different players.  I see great athletic talent, potential, and energy on this team.  I don't think there is as much skill, and freshmen--regardless of potential--are mistake-prone and inconsistent.  Garrett slows things down, has experience, and a high IQ.  He can also create and stroke it relatively well.

I think Sampson will be a terror on the offensive glass and his potential is through the roof.  There are going to be many times when this young team is out of control and playing too fast and sloppy, and that is when Greene and Garrett will be so valuable IMO.

I don't like counting on freshmen for more than depth and energy.  Experience wins games.

I can't see how Phil isnt on the floor for virtually every competitive second until Branch returns.  He is beyond critical to any half-court success we hope to have.

fwiw, i think green should play point, and harrison should stay as off guard.  i also haven't been hearing anything about branch's play.  that tells me that green will continue to start, although thats nothing more than a gut feeling.  if anybody does have some feedback on what the staff thinks of branch's play, i would love to hear.

d'angelos  brother also  advised him to slow it down when playing point.

I like Greene a lot. If he's playing well, he should start, regardless of Branch.

Crazy prediction....  Phil Greene will make an All- Big East team before he's done at St. John's.  Second team...

. I see DLo and Green playing about 30+min per game until Branch arrives  and  I also feel Green should be playing the 1. Maybe Lavin wants to showcase DLO at the 1 for the NBA due to his size.

I'm definitely on board with everyone who's saying that Phil needs to be on the court as much as possible.  I think he makes our half court offense run, period.  Call him the pg, call D'angelo the pg; I think it's semantics.  Both are needed.

I'm not fully with Marillac on Garrett though.   I like Amir, and going into the season I would've said he'd be a starter... I like his passing and aggressiveness going to the rim.  But coach has publicly said Jones will start; and Sampson brings a lot to the table as well.   I like him, but wouldn't go so far as to say he needs to be on the floor as much as possible.   I think he ends up in a rotation, getting 20+ mins.

Dom is the guy I see losing minutes.   I think we're overrating his defense, and while his handle has improved - he still can't beat anyone off the dribble.  He's just not as likely to get his pocket picked anymore.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I just see a lot more production from some of the other options we could be playing instead of him, and that becomes doubly true when Marco and Orlando are able to play.

Greene had 7 assists and no turnovers Tuesday night. We'll know more Tuesday afternoon, but I'd love more of the same, and it wouldn't matter if he scored. We have Sampson, Harrison, Jones and Garrett who can go to town offensively.

I said in another thread - Phil reminds me of another Green - Erick at Virginia Tech.   And Erick was All-ACC last year.
