BE Tourney staying at MSG through 2025-2026?
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:52:30 AM »
According to Lenn Robbins in this morning's NY Post, the deal has been cut, but neither side has yet to confirm.  If true, this would obviously be a big relief.

Was never really in doubt.  Manhattan and MSG are abuzz during the BE tourny each year.  It is almost impossible to get tickets---except from scalpers and fans whose teams have been eliminated.  No reason that that won't continue.  Cuse fans will be replaced by Memphis and Temple fans.  ACC would never come to NYC full-time and MSG wasn't going to push the BE out for the chance to bid on the ACC tourny every 8-10 years.

Can't just replace Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Notre Dame that easily.    Big East tournament will still be a fun time for fans, and will draw a good crowd, but it won't be the marquee event it has been for the last decade.
Which won't matter at all to some of us, as long as SJU is competitive I could care less if the BE is the "best" tournament, or not.    But tickets will be easier to get, and some of the early rounds will have lesser crowds than they already do.   Memphis is supposedly a great fan base, but even still they aren't a even replacement for the Orange.   How many people here work with an alum from Memphis?   It's just going to be a different feeling I think.

But, glad to see it'll be at the garden for the foreseeable future.   If things stabilize, before we know it, the new teams will become old hat.   It's not long ago that WVU and Pitt were strangers in this league.

It is definitely big come November when the TV contract negotiation open up outside of ESPN. Gives us some leverage.

Memphis has a HUGE fan base, and Temple is a long time quality program.  I think it will end up being just as marquee as in the past.  Losing Cuse was the only huge loss that we can't replace because they have huge NYC contingent and also located in NYS.  I think the tourney will be fantastic though and with SJU's resurgence, things will remain electric.  Battles will be just as epic if not more, with other programs stepping up.

BE may not replace Xcuse buzz but Xcuse buzz will be meaningless in ACC which which could be called the NCC, North Carolina Conference.  All those loud mouth, blowhards from NYC and burbs by way of Xcuse are not going to travel to Tabacco Road.  I agree that Memphis will be a good traveling team to the BE championships, more than replacing WV.  Temple will be a better draw that Pitt in the BE tourney as they have metro NY alums and are only short ride away on Amtrak--with a bar car direct to the game.  Lastly, without the loud mouth, blowhards, MSG will be a more pleasant place to watch BB.

I'll enjoy the Big East tournament more in the next few seasons regardless because St Johns should be good, but the idea that the tournament will be as competitive and have the same fan support is silly.
Syracuse basketball is irreplaceable for the Big East in terms of fan support.    And college sports will always be about the coaches; the BE loses Boeheim, Dixon, Brey, and Huggins ... that's not offset by Josh Pastner and Fran Dunphy.
I'm excited about Memphis, but look to Louisville as a guide for what to expect from their fans.  Does Lousiville travel well?  Eh..  They're tremendous at home.  On the road, they're above average.  They're certainly not Syracuse, and I would say Pittsburgh has more fan support most years at the BE.   In the end Memphis is a nice addition, but you're losing an irreplaceable program in Cuse, two teams with 15 years of history in the conference, and ND.    Memphis makes up for Pittsburgh, and Temple can replace WVU in terms of talent and fan support.  But that still leaves Syracuse and Notre Dame.   Two of the biggest names in college sports, not to mention biggest alumni bases in NYC.

In 8 of the last 12 seasons Syracuse or Pittsburgh have had the best regular season record in the Big East.    You can't lose your two best teams and expect the tournament not to lose something!

Again, I could care less if the BE tournament is considered the best, or if it's on par with the Pac-12, or SEC.  What does that matter to me?   I want to see St Johns win, and the conference turmoil won't have a big effect on us.
BUT, you can't replace the teams the BE is losing and not expect the tournament to lose a little something.

btw...i saw the acc commissioner interviewed on espn (which dedicated virtually its entire media day to that conference).  products advertised on espn should be boycotted.

my point, though, is he was asked about the acc moving its tournament to msg.  he wanted to do it...but on a rotating basis.  msg said every year or nothing...so there won't be a deal.

maybe the acc can work something out with the nassau coliseum.

I saw that interview too.  He talked about the ACC having a footprint in New York (didn't specifically say NYC) but said that MSG would be a natural fit in the rotation.  He made it sound like MSG would have been willing to kick the Big east out if they could get the ACC every year.  That kind of pissed me off.

that was the implication...kicking the big east out...or at least figuring out a way to have both tournaments at once.  it's a whore business...never forget.  a lesson for the greed is good gang.

won't matter once BE stabilizes at which time we will, at minimum, be in par with ACC -- and may ultmately better again...Houston, SMU, Memphis and Temple will all benefit from being in BE...Pitt and WV were nothing without BE...ND is a paper tiger...Syracuse was only loss...and will be forgotten down the road
