This is why these A10 school will not be consider:

Charlotte: FBS fball

Duquesne: Out of date facilities, no recent histry of success.

Fordham: One city, one program, Out of date facilities, struggle mightily to compete in A10.

GW: One city, one program.

LaSalle: Out of date facilities, no recent histry of success, one city, one program.

UMass: FBS fball

Rhode Island: Too small a state to have two members.

St. Bonnies: Out of date facilities, no recent histry of success.

St. Joe's: One city, one program.

VCU: Could be subbed in for Richmond, but I believe Richmond has the bones fo longer term success.

And who plays in the Garden then?  ACC won't play there every year.  If you think so your dreaming or having an unneccesary nightmare.

We still pay the Garden rent.  So long as we right the check home games will be there.

A parting shot before I leave for the game that I can expand on later and thru the Holiday weekend.

Who is the 3rd or 4th best team in the ACC over the last 10 yrs lets say.  Would you rather be them or Xavier over that timeframe?  I'd rather not fight Duke, UNC, Cuse, Pitt and maybe Uconn twice a year every year.  I'd rather be the king of my conference with fellow members with same interests.  I'm in the minority but thats my take.

we pay the garden rent with the expectation that we also make money. i have to believe we get a % of ticket sales. this league doesn't make us money.

I like that league Choz...Any Boston area teams we could add?

It's all about TV markets...I believe the Conference Networks make more money from cable companies if they have a local team in a market.  I believe it forces the cable companies to make the channel on basic cable which ups the amount the conferences earn (at least for the Big Ten Network) .  I think that is the only way we get considered for one of these conferences.  I'm not sure if Rutgers or Syracuse is considered in the NY Market or not.  I believe thats why Rutgers was a Big 10 target.

Father Harrington recently said in one of his video interviews that it takes something like 10K fannies in the seats at MSG just to break even.

I've actually recently come along with this line of thinking.   It makes a lot of sense with recent conference developments.  Take the ACC.  There will always be 4-6 team better than STJ coming into the season, especially when they become super conference.  I'd rather dominate an A-10 type, and be a consistent top 3 team.  Obviously, all of this is hypothetical, so please don't ask that I list 6 ACC teams better than STJ..  It was estimation on my part.

Would love to see that league.  It would be better than what we've had these recent years and a lot better than what we'll see with these new football schools.

The key for success is to attract good coaches and play in the right venues.  The players will then come.

With Lavin and MSG SJU is well positioned to be a leader.

Coaches and great venues (MSG) is what built the BE in the 80's before the football schools ruined it.

Interesting to hear some others feel the same.  I thought I was in vast minority.

Duke and UNC off the top.  Cuse and Pitt are perennial powers.  Throw in if ACC adds Uconn or Lville to replace Maryland.

Playing Duke once a year like we have isn't bad.  But twice a year, plus UNC twice is one of the reasons the ACC was always so top heavy.  Those teams in the 3-6 range were getting beat up.

There are plenty of cons to the theory Choz and I laid out.  How many people from other schools will travel to games and such.  But then again I just spent 3 days in Charleston where Dayton had 10 times as many fans of any other school.

Traveling to MSG is obviously to far for those fans that never go to games.

talk about a school that needs to be in a basketball centric league:

Do you think TGAPL would rather (a) compete against half a dozen HOF coaches in the best ACConference in the country (b) dominate the new A10 or (c) coach the Lakers? I think B would be his last choice. Bonus question: will Cluess still be available when Lavin bails or will he have already replaced Mike Rice?

Choz, those schools you mention with football programs will be relegated to money-losing programs that will nevr compete for anything and I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these schools dropping football all together.  Schools also could be in a conference with bball schools, but maybe drop to 1AA football instead.  I think whatever conference we are in, it will have a football league, just a league that doesn't compete at the level the Big East currently competes.  Athletic departments have some decisions to make when the time comes.

I don't think Lavin has as many options as your implying Fun.  At least not that many attractive ones.    Even if we were to string together a series of successful seasons is Wake Forest going to offer him more than SJU and Repole are now?   I'm not convinced.

USC of course is another story.   But again, we would need to be moderately successful before that became an option too.
