I was curious as I don't think anybody suggested we were in a position of strength except a fictional character.

What about the poster  who said "As strange as it might sound, SJU Georgetown etc are sitting pretty right now." Or is sitting pretty a bad thing.

Never said Big East was in a position of strength.  I think the issues for the football school are very different than for bball schools.  Basketball schools are just sitting and waiting to see what transpires. I think SJU basketball will be ok no matter what.  We sucked for 20 years while we resided in a great conference.  None of the basketball schools prospered on the court during that time except recently added Marquette maybe.

Where I am going to go, I'm not going to paddle to New Zealand?????

Point Break - Swayze asking Keanu Reeves to let him ride the monster wave at the end of the movie.  Is it Patrick Swayze day, Fordham?

Could be.  What's next for tomorrow?  Perhaps Anthony Michael Hall day?  Maybe C Thomas Howell day? Michael J Fox?

I'll take 80's teen idols with 3 names for a 1000 Alex!!!!!

Once again, is said SJU, Georgetown, not the entire Big East with respect to specifically the football schools.  The football side of the league is in turmoil.  I don't believe Bball schools in solid media markets are in turmoil.  Look at Marquette and the dollars they bring in without football.  Memphis had a great bball program without big time football.  Same with Xavier.  I think we are in a decent enough position right now because we don't play football and aren't under he same pressure to jump into a better league.

Fine. You said Saint John's was sitting pretty. That is, you believe SJ is "on top of the world." And that's you bringing teh objective.

I don't think SJ is sitting pretty. We're being demoted from one of the better conferences in college basketball to a hypothetical and mediocre all Catholic League. Neither do I think the football schools - at least Uconn and Louisville - are in turmoil. They're the ones with options.

I don't have to look at Marquette. I can look at SJ. How many fans do you tink the Saint Bonaventure/Saint Johns Sunday doubleheader at the Garden is going to draw, versus say a Duke Syracuse game.

Memphis and Xavier aren't what you aspire to, they're what you settle for.

No. Because we don't play football is precisely the reason we're in this mess. It's not a boon.

Yes thank goodness we're not under any pressure to not join the ACC. Top of the world ma!

Rumor has it that the Big East offered BYU after Rutgers left and they turned down an invitation.  Air Force and Fresno State as well.
That's not a rumor from the twitter idiot, there are legit stories being circulated to that effect.

Like I said, it not optimal but "sitting pretty" was in comparison to a lot of schools with football programs that aren't going to make the big 4.   Pretty sure you haven't gone to SJU games anytime in recent years, but we're not bursting at the seams with fans even now.  Too many cynical dipshits like you who'd rather obsess over a line or two that I type than leave the snow belt to actually see a game.

I'm fine with competing at a level like Marquette or Xavier.  Both have been excellent programs.  We have a tiny urban campus in Jamaica Queens and never fit the mold of "big time football".  In fact SJU's success has been irrespective of all this football nonsense anyway.

As you oft refer to, our heyday is a Final 4 appearance in 1985.  We finally have talent now and a coach who can at minimum recruit capable players.  We're sitting pretty from my standpoint.  Bring on a conference slate of Georgetown, Xavier, Marquette, Nova and others and it will still be a fine basketball league.  Schedule some top notch OOC opponents who will always jump at chance to play in MSG.  We might be poised to even have more consustent success than we have seen in the great and powerful Big East of yesteryear.

Good, we're in agreement. Saint John's moving to the MAAC II is "not optimal."

Speaking of obsessing, I've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to come up with the perfect level of sarcasm to address your belief that many people don't attend SJ games because they're mesmerized by your chat board posts and I can't do it justice. It's exquisitely inane.

SJU can draw any top program in the country to play in MSG.

They had no problem doing that before there was a BE

They just have to schedule a great OOC schedule and come in the top three of what will be a pretty good conference.

Exactly! This why College basketball is better then college football. Worst case scenario is that we play in a subpar league but still can get a good seat at the dance because we have more flexibility with our schedule...

The ironic thing with SJU basketball is that we were one of the worst teams in the best basketball conference in the country and we got dick, and no one came to the games...How is being one of the best basketball teams in a mediocre conference be so much worse?

I would prefer to be in a great basketball conference with great teams but if that is not the case I think we can still be successful and still fill MSG with a great product. SJU NEEDS consistency and we have not had that for whatever reason thus far.

St John's will do fine as long as it has good coaching.  It already has MSG and the New York City market.
Two seasons ago was the start of what we'll soon be seeing every season.
Lavin is bringing the program back.

ACC presidents have a vote and press conference scheduled for tomorrow 7am

Rumor is that they are only considering Louisville at this time.   See ya later Rick, I appreciate that you at least tried to fight for the basketball side of the conference.

I think it is probably about that time, but I hope the bball only schools have some semblance of a plan.  I don't think they're planning on disbanding even though it might be a feasible option at this point.  We'd have to merge with the more premium A-10 bball schools.

Fwiw, it is certainly disheartening to see the destruction of the Big East as we know it.  It's sad that it has come to this and there has been such a line in the sand drawn in college athletics.  It means a lot to all of our sports to have to change entire landscape of competition, but none of this was ever really in our hands.

Done apparently! Aresco countering with Montana State! Seriously it is a sad time, but let's move on and put a BBall league together.

wake aresco when it's over.  the big east has to fire this jerk and move on.  other conference commissioners are picking the corn out of the shit the big east has become...while aresco is napping.
