wake aresco when it's over.  the big east has to fire this jerk and move on.  other conference commissioners are picking the corn out of the shit the big east has become...while aresco is napping.

So after calling for the firing of Marinatto you now call for the firing of his replacement.

Brilliant!!!

I long ago said the BBall schools should grow a pair.  It is time for the BB schools to controll their own destiny.  I keep hearing how much more a contract is worth with football schools in the conference.  Well that might be true for a MAJOR conference but the Big Least is not and will never be one.  So how much extra revenue will accrue to the non FB schools in the BE from a Cinference USA type league--jack spit.  Now consider a 8 to 9 team conference based on BB (novel idea had by Dave Gavitt) where teams play each other home and home.  This intensifies the rivalries and produces good BB.  You tell the players they are the BMOC's; they are not second class to the FB players who "make all the money for the school".

The home and home will foster great rivalries and exciting ball--something a 17 team league will never have.  You also have women's BB,soccer, baseball and lacrosse programing to offer to a sports network that is looking to fill hours throughout the entire year.

As it is the ACC is a 15 team league in all sports other than FB because of the ND affiliation add 2 more and you might get one home and home a year

On point Dave;

“@DaveKrupinski: While most schools are leaving the Big East don't be surprised when basketball coaches of the schools left do the same.”

So...just when we saw light at the end of the long dark tunnel SJU b-ball has been in, it will actually be the light of the train on which Lavin rides out of town, smashing any remaining hopes of re-establishing SJU's relevancy as a major b-ball program.  Wow, I need a drink.

Where is he riding to exactly?

Virginia?
Wake Forest?
Rutgers?
Boston College?

Sorry but I don't  see him leaving for those type of jobs.  There are a handful of jobs I could see him leaving for and those aren't opening anytime soon.

There is still a possibility that the ACC could put the final dagger into the Big East if they lose 2 more schools, if Clemson and NC State bolt for example, would be out of the realm of possibility that they add Cincinnati and UCONN for football/basketball and St Johns and Georgetown for basketball only.

I think it is more of a probability rather than possibility.  I have no doubt ACC will lose some schools which means Uconn and Cincy all but gone.  Just a matter of time.

I can only hope that Lavin comes from this school of thought.

Rick Pitino several months ago on potentially Uconn to the ACC:

"“Did you ever think that it ever crossed the mind of John Wooden to go into the Atlantic Coast Conference because they were bigger than the Pac-10 when he was winning 11 championships? Pitino asked. “Do you ever think it crossed his mind? No, when you’re great winner, those things don’t cross your mind.

“The only thing that crosses your mind is the ability to win a championship and carry on the great tradition you’ve built.

I agree Moose. I believe Lavin has to put together some impressive tourney runs, before any major programs go after him. My hope would be to play in a conference with the Butlers, Marquettes,Temples, Xavier's, Novas of the world and he finds that attractive. He seems happy in NY. My one concern, without such a conference, could he recruit as well?

Assuming that this trend of keeping football stays intact, Big East should make a bold statement for basketball and do the following

Make a mega basketball conference with 14 teams playing football and see if this is good enough to keep BCS bid

I will keep UCONN and Cincy in the mix as they simply may just be left out unless ACC loses 2 teams and they add them

* Football and basketball
** Football only

EAST
Georgetown
Providence
Seton Hall
Villanova
St. Johns
Temple *
Richmond
USF *
UCF *
UCONN *
Tulane *
Memphis *

WEST
Marquette
DePaul
Cincinnati *
Houston *
SMU *
SD State *
Gonzaga
UNLV *
Butler
Xavier
St. Mary's
Creighton

FOOTBALL ONLY
Navy
Bosie State
East Carolina

You people are beginning to remind me of Hitler in the bunker pushing imaginary divisions around on a map of the eastern front.

To recap: all we have to do is convince Gonzaga to leave the WCC to play in a mediocre mishmash football conference with Saint John's, Navy and East Carolina.  Excellent plan. I just hope that Rommel's supply lines aren't cut off in the meanwhile.

Marinatto was a fool. He always reminded me of  a chubby little brother that nobody took seriously.  The Big East's future was determined before Aresco.

Playing those schools has got to be better than San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Clara, or Pepperdine?

How many impressive tourney runs did TGAPL have to put together before Saint John's fans hailed him a savior? (Oh I'm sorry, you said "major programs," my bad.) How many impressive tourney runs did his assistant coach have to put together before he got invited to the NBA? Why do you think Lavin's only job opportunities are lateral moves in the college coaching ranks?

Mark Few's established Gonzaga as a perennial basketball power without any help from SJU - other than when we roll over like a little bitch at tournament time obviously. It seems to me that Gonzaga is sitting pretty. What do they need us gor? OTOH maybe if we ask nicely the WCC will give us a pity join.

Saw a comment on cbs that was a great analogy. The be is the formerly hot girl that is not fat and will shag anyone willing to talk to her.p

Since we have taken half their teams, can we buy the conference Usa naming rights?

Hey, I hope you guys are right, but St. John's is no longer in the position it was in when Lavin came aboard (i.e., sleeping giant in the best basketball conference).  If his recruiting results go dry over the next year or two because of the sinking ship perception, I would be surprised if Lavin decides to stay for the long haul, as SJU would be viewed as no better than a decent, mid-major program.  Compared to that, Wake, Virginia, BC would all look like better head coaching deals.

What will keep Lavin here is if we can pay him.   If a new basketball-only conference nets us a smaller tv payout, then we won't be able to afford him and his staff - and that's when he'll leave.
Don't fool yourself into thinking this is about prestige of conference.

We could be in  a conference with Fordham, Manhattan, and LIU and if we paid a coach the same or more than he'd get from a major program then said coach would be inclined to stay.

The $64,000 question is whether the "new" Big East, or a yet to be devised basketball-only conference, will earn us the same amount of tv revenue.

I wouldn't want any part of an all catholic league or basketball only league. This is Big Time college athletics and that type of thinking is what got us Norm. We all know how that turned out. I believe if we want to save our basketball program and keep it attractive to recruits and coaches, we need to try our best to join ACC in basketball only, imo.

I'd rather not take 4 losses a year more often than not from UNC and/or Duke.  Xavier has done pretty damn well for itself in a non power conference.  So has Gonzaga.  The ACC has never been able to sustain a 3rd/4th team because of the presence of Duke and UNC.  Throw in Cuse now too and Lville and Pitt and its probably worse for someone else to break thru.

Has Xavier struggled recruiting?

Obviously Xavier has fared quite well in that regard and now plays in a conference that is on upswing. Hope we can say the same. Not being a "doomer", but,net of joining/forming a solid basketball league, being in NY, playing in Garden can go so far. Just my opinion!
