It is my understanding that the NCAA rules for basketball (different than football) mandate a 25 year maximum age.  For every season a student athlete starts after the age of 21, they lose a season of eligibility.  I know Fordham96 has sworn that no age limit exists.  There are certain execptions (Religious missions and military).  I don't see Sanchez getting a second year.

As for Bourgault, I think his five-year clock started when he enrolled at Montanta State and was subsequently ruled inelgible.  Bourgault has a pretty decent claim because he missed his first season at Monroe with a knee injury.  The NCAA has given a sixth year to several basketball players the last few seasons.  It seems unfair that Bourgault would lose two seasons due to no fault of his own--especially when one of those seasons was because of ineligibility due to his foreign transcripts.  It would seem unfair to ignore the precedent set recently just because Bourgault missed his season due to injury at the NCJAA level and not while playing in the NCAA.

So how did 29 year old Brandon weeden play last year under this age limit rule?

And Chris Weinke was 28 years old when he won the 2000 Heisman trophy - born in 1972.

He did say he thought rules were different for football, which would seem stupid.

I've never heard this before . . . but every super old guy I can name off the top of my head served in the military and then went back to college.

So, until yesterday, the NCAA had no idea that Sanchez is 25 years old? What are we missing here? This doesn't add up.

Ron Highsmith came out of the Army at around age 25 and got four years of eligibility at G-town

I'm not sure Marillac is right regarding the age rule, but I really can't think of any names to prove him wrong. Didn't know about Highsmith, but along with the names of the military guys I knew, and the Mormon mission guys, I can't think of guys without those exceptions who were starting their college careers in their mid-20s. The NCAA really should have to have all eligibility issues squared away by July 1.

Way back in Sonny Dove era, Bobby Duerr played for SJU after stint in army. He was in his early twenties. Realize rules have changed since then.

The rules are different for every sport:  football, basketball, track and field, etc.  The NCAA does not make it easy to find the rules, one would have to download a huge file and go from there.  If you read my post clearer, I did say that footbal; was different and thus guys like Weinke and Weeden were allowed to play.  The rules may even be different for the various divisions as well within one sport.  I may be wrong, but this is my understanding of the way things work.  As for the logic for different age limits, it's the NCAA...logic has little to do with it.

I'm totally with you on point B, ras.

If their eligability is not in question, they should be allowed to play, and they can be clasified later, IMO.

That makes way too much sense, and is much too player-friendly a rule, for the NCAA to even consider it, unfortunatly.

Nobody's expecting Marco & Orlando to play tomorrow night right?
I haven't heard anything on a timetable other than what 'Zags said; a week to 10 days.

Was wondering if anyone knew more?

BYU punishes it's own players for having consentual sex. There is no reason for the NCAA to punish them any further.

Organized religion is a powerful thing, probably one of the few things the NCAA would be afraid to take on.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone already took it on.
