it was painfully obvious to me that we need Marco and Sanchez on the floor.  DLo and Phil cannot carry this team consistently every night against tougher competition.  40+ from them combined is not going to happen every night.  we need a scorer at the forward position.

To beat the likes of Murray St and Baylor SJU needs Marco and Sanchez in general and Sanchez in particular.  Sanchez will help score and rebound and ease the transition of Sampson and Jones into the rotation.

Definitely not a perfect win but you can see where adding Sanchez, Marco and later Branch will do to an already talented team.  This team could be very dangerous come February.

I think we can beat Murray State without Sanchez, but Baylor is a tall order.  Baylor is big, deep and tough.  Im not counting on Sanchez at this point.  If we do get Sanchez and Bourgault eligible, I think we will go a few rounds in the ncaa's. Sanchez adds height, skill and depth.  Bourgault adds a big time shooter.  Branch adds a big pass-first pg.  we can be killer if all are eligible.

After some time thinking about the game here are some of my thoughts.  First, great win it is always important to get the first one out of the way. Second, Greene is much improved. I was a doubter last year and am still skeptical he can give us that kind of performance night in and night out, but wow. His shot is much improved and he looked confident. I think at the end of the first half he showed glimpses of old Phil when he put his head down forgot about his teammates and starting forcing. I hope this was more  of the fact that no one else was doing anything. Third, Obekpa looked great. He is obviously still very raw offensively but it is great to finally have what we have lacked for so long. Fourth, Sampson looked nervous as all hell. I have faith that he will calm down and be a solid contributor. I don't think he is refined as Moe but Moe didn't look like a pro his first few games either. Fifth, harrison was harrison he will be a BE POY candidate in my opinion. Sixth, this team needs orlando Sanchez. He will be the consistent inside scoring threat this team is missing right now. I hope to hell he gets cleared even if he is suspended a few games.  Seventh, Dom looked lost yesterday. I hope for his sake he just had an off day.  He really needs to pick it up. Finally some random thoughts... amir looked good he will be solid all year overachieving while going under the radar; Marco will help this team spread the court if and when he is cleared; Jones is better than I expected but will reserve my thoughts until I see him against BE competition; I liked seeing more man and throwing in the zone at the end to cause confusion it worked well but the defense as a whole needs to be better; the rebounding is a tad scary these guys need to learn to box out and not always rely on athleticism; lastly it was great to see coach back out there.

I think the quote Phil had about his wrist last year was telling.  Did we see a banged up Phil last year and this is the real Phil?

don't know if this was posted, but a couple of things i noticed about the game.  first, greene made all of his free throws at the end of the game.  that turned out to be very important.  big difference from nurideen last year.  and second, those guys were sliding all day.  the equipment manager should check those sneakers.  somebody could get hurt.  i didn't see detroit slipping.

Pointer and Sampson have been horrible today.

Sampson's struggles, I get.  Very concerned about Dom.

To me Dom is a SF. He's not a guard. Shouldn't be handling the ball to much. Just swinging it.

You're right and I'm glad.  If Dom had shown any ability to handle Steve might have screwed DLo and blown the game.  Thanks Dom!

Why are you in such a bad mood? We just beat a team where revenge was 15 years in the making. Lighten up, and enjoy it. Both of you.

Greene is a gamer.   His time at the point last year has really enhanced his game, and if can shoot the ball consistently like he did yesterday, I think STJ has one of the best back courts in the BE when the season ends, IMHO.

FWIW, Dave predicting a Detroit victory.

Dave couldn't pick his nose in a dark closet.

Motor City Madman - 59
Donald Trump        -  63

Enjoy the game fellas.  May this season surpass all of your wildest expectations!

Please don't associate our beloved Johnnies with that idiot Donald Trump.

Eminem --  72

Jay-Z -----  81

Sorry.  Just thought he fits well with Nugent as both are avid Obama bashers.

Sorry, I missed the reference.  Not familiar with Nugent's nickname.

I'm so old I can remember when he was a guitar player and not a hunter and political analyst.

He's a political activist the way Tim Tebow is a quarterback, nah probably even worse than that.

Congratulations to Hollywood, staff and players for making his return to action a triumphant one!

Obekpa - Best 6' 8" shot blocker ever?  The second best debut game by a SJU player ever and only the second SJU player to break a long standing team record right out of the gate.  Only surpassed by the great Avery "single game 3-point record holder" Patterson's 8 three point baskets in his debut game of the 2006/2007 season.

He needs to learn to square up and go straight up on his jump shot.  Currently falls/fades away from the basket as he's shooting it every time.

D'Lo - Kicked out of practice, sat out, lost starting spot and being yo-yo'd in and out of 1st half of this game have not hurt his confidence one iota.  Thinks that he can score on anyone, at anytime, from anywhere.  You gotta believe.  Kudos.

Jakarr - Freshman jitters ruin his opener.  Only way to go from here is up.

Sir Dom - Often reported on this board that Sir Dom's handle has much improved over the off-season and that he's a backup point guard candidate.  No evidence of that.

Mr. Greenejeans - Seemingly improved his outside shot tremendously over the off-season.  Much evidence of that.

Amir - Speculated on this board that the televised exhibition contests might provide a scouting advantage to Detroit.  Not so as Amir makes that effective, strong left drive move every time and the defenders look stunned and continue to guard him as a righty.

Mr. Jones - Great physic for a freshman.  Best body we've had on a forward since Glover.

Hollywood - Very different courtside demeanor than Dunlap.  Very positive and encouraging.  A real refreshing "you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar approach" that the players must love.  Expect players to give a consistently high effort level for this coach all year long.

Good luck in South Carolina.  How could the College of Charleston's nickname not be the "Chews"?

The Great Danes 63- 62 road stunner over the Pac 10's University of Washington made this the perfect pre-conference basketball day.

Don't forget Jakarr.  Probably the worst game he has EVER played since he first touched a basketball.  He will be a scoring force from the forward position.

I don't think Jakarr will be a scoring force.  He's never really been that type of player--that's not to say he won't have his 15-20 point games or dominate in his own way.  The best case for this year is to have Jakarr put back a few offensive rebounds, get a few buckets on the break, hit an open J, and take h is man off the bounces once or twice.
