Watching Butler take it to Indiana is great.  Hope we get them in the new conference!

Yeah they should definitely be an invite. Them Xavier and Creighton are imo no brainers.

Our clueless leader probably wants the Pope to throw up opening toss in inaugural Cath. League game. (From inside that glass enclosed golf cart he rides in)

Doesn't sound too bright:

Wait, is this really going to be a catholic only league?
That post article mentions xavier Dayton st Louis creighton and duquesne being contacted... What do those schools all have in common?
No discussions with butler or vcu ?  or does Lenny just not know of them?

This is troubling imo.   I didn't think catholic only was a real possibility.
Always assumed the league would be.mostly catholic.  But exclusively?  that's going to rub people the wrong way.

Have never heard a catholic conf, just schools of similar makeups, Butler for example is not a catholic school

In that Post article, Lenn Robbins only mentions catholic schools as having been contacted;  Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, St Louis, even Duquesne.
And on ESPN; Mike Brey is quoted as hearing something similar; a "national catholic conference".    That worries me

Why does it worry you.  We are what we are.

Let me rephrase that, it doesn't "worry" me Moose - you're right, we are what we are.   I actually like having a catholic identity, and shared heritage.   It's what made Marquette and our sister school Depaul such natural rivals when they joined the BE.  Seemless fit.

But I would be concerned that tv networks wouldn't want to carry an all-catholic league.   I know NBC has no problem hosting Notre Dame, and they run religious themed ads throughout the telecast.   But a whole league that is all catholic schools?    I think that may rub some of the network bosses the wrong way.
I hope I'm wrong though.
And who knows - maybe we are talking to Butler and VCU.
Butler just beat Indiana. Lets gettem, now.

The timing of this new league could be perfect for us.   If we can manage to grow, and not lose D'angelo or Jakarr after the season - then next season should really be a breakthrough year for us.   Even more so if Lawrence or Jordan are on campus, and if Branch develops.
Next year it sounds like Louisville, ND etc will all still be in the BE, plus Memphis and Temple.
We have the opportunity to go out with a banner year against a still very strong Big East, and enter the new conference on a high note.
Does sound great. As usual, it's all predicated on winning. Go Storm.

Only thing that concerns me about Butler is whether the adminstration is committed to keeping the basketball program competitive WHEN the coach leaves or paying him to make sure he doesn't.

Great to see we are not going to simply hand over the Big East name. It took decade's to build the Big East brand, fight like heck to keep it. It may not be that hard as most of these new schools don't have any alligence to the brand. As long as they receive the same revenue, we maybe able to work something out.

When the dust clears,

I expect 2013-2014 to be the last year for the Catholic 7, Cuse, Notre Dame, Pitt, Louisville, and Rutgers in the Big East

I expect UCONN and Cincinnato to never play a game in the existing conf

I expect Catholic 7 to keep Big East name and MSG

I am sure that the existing schools will pluck what they can from Conf USA and Mtn West

I expect the existing schools to negotiate perhaps a little more of the share of league assets to let everyone leave early although argument could be made that those new schools don't deserve anything just by joining the Big East

Only South Florida will remain from the existing Big East I (I don't count Temple)

They have kept him already and dodged a few bullets.  They had a good coach before him as well who won there.  Its a basketball hotbed.

Fan, that is a legit concern, but if Butler comes aboard it should give them the resources it needs to keep their coach.

http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball/story/2012-12-14/cincinnati-uconn-acc-big-east-leaving-conference-realignment-connecticut

In order to form such a league, however, UConn and Cincinnati would have to make some sort of profound commitment -- perhaps even a “grant of rights” similar to the Big 12’s, meaning they’d lose their media revenue for the length of time if they leave -- to convince the Western schools involved that they would not exit immediately if invited to join the ACC.

That could become leverage to convince current members of the ACC -- especially some of its more vulnerable longtime schools, such as Duke and Wake Forest, to invite Cincinnati and UConn now and bring the current conference membership to 16.

Because at some point, perhaps soon, the Devils, Deacons and one or two others might be left behind as ACC core members with more football power (Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech), larger fan bases (North Carolina, NC State, Virginia) and bigger markets (Georgia Tech) are swept up by the far-richer Big Ten and SEC and the slightly richer Big 12.

There is no short of awareness inside the ACC that such possibilities exists.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

I'm not even sure who is in that family off the top of my head, but I tossed those schools out mostly just as examples of the tradition-rich ones that I think he leaves for. He makes enough and is happy enough there that a middle-of-the-pack big conference team will barely get a return call from him. At least that's my impression. I think Illinois would have been appealing for him, but not sure if he was even offered it when it opened.

Worth noting, Stevens has been there 5 seasons.   Since 1997 (when OUR head coach started coaching) they've gone:   23-10, 22-11, 22-10, 23-8, 24-8, 26-6, 27-6,  16-14, 13-15, 20-13, 29-7.  THEN Stevens arrived, and they've added years of 30-4, 26-6, 33-5, 28-10.

They're much more than a one-trick-pony, and have been for a couple of decades.

I generally like the guy - but CBS's Tim Brando took to twitter with a pretty vicious attack on Fr Harrington tonight:

Tim BrandoVerified ‏@TimBrando
The Reverend from St. John's made a complete fool of himself. A colossal mistake. No integrity no compassion no regard for loyalty. A joke!
12:27 AM - 16 Dec 12

Tim BrandoVerified ‏@TimBrando
As a Catholic the actions of these schools only underscores why our Religion is universally ridiculed. Absolutely pathetic money grab.Awful!
12:31 AM - 16 Dec 12

      (Random guy replies to him)
      Alexander Stubbs ‏@zstubbs
@TimBrando respectfully disagree. Big East today not close to being the same entity (size, feel, geographic) as in '80, '90' '00, or '10.

             Tim Brando Tim BrandoVerified ‏@TimBrando
@zstubbs Boloney. The incredible need of Catholics to ridicule the successful and promote the have nots says it all. Gotta say what ya see.
