ACC considers N.Y. for tournament

Because of the Atlantic Coast Conference's increased Northeastern footprint, the ACC is interested in holding a future men's basketball tournament in New York, an ACC school official told ESPN.

The deadline to bid for the 2016-21 ACC tournaments was in September and New York's Madison Square Garden and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn did not submit a bid.

However, because of the league's changing membership, the ACC is now considering other options for future tournament sites, the source said.

Besides New York, other cities being considered to host the 2016-21 ACC tournaments are Atlanta (Philips Arena), Charlotte, Greensboro, N.C.; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington D.C.

The 2013-15 ACC men's basketball tournaments will be held in Greensboro, but beyond that the ACC is looking to move the tournament to a variety of cities.

Four sites -- Miami, Orlando, Pittsburgh and Atlanta's Georgia Dome, who all submitted a bid to host a tournament between 2016-21 -- have been eliminated from contention. Despite the Georgia Dome hosting the two highest attended conference tournaments (the 2001 and 2009 ACC tournaments), it was eliminated because of the ACC's preference to place future tournaments in more traditional basketball arenas instead of domes.

On Friday, league athletic directors, staff members and faculty advisers completed three days of the ACC's winter meetings in Fort Lauderdale.

This fall, Pittsburgh and Syracuse join the ACC with Louisville and Notre Dame expected to join in 2014, sources told ESPN.

I agree.  I'm surprised names haven't surfaced yet.  I think they are trying to get ducks in row regarding departure first but I think a powerful leader can help facilitate that.

The BE should recruit Xavier, VCU & Butler and be done with it. Put a lock on it, and shoot whoever tries to leave.

X and Butler are pretty much locked.  But tough for them to announce for a conference with no name, no commish, no offices etc...

Wasn't Tagliabue mentioned at one point as commissioner of the new league? A while back I thought he and a few other big names were out there.

In all seriousness the ACC should have their conference tournament in the south with the rest of the confederates.

eliminating Miami is utterly stupid.  Great weather in early march; great restaurants and night life; and the Heat arena.  Maybe they think Miami and Fla St are going to SE conference

One of my wishes almost happened.  Its going to happen sooner than later

http://www.masslive.com/umassfootball/index.ssf/2013/01/umass_faculty_senate_motion_to.html

The Univ. of Massachusetts Faculty Senate by a 19-18 margin voted down a motion that would have called on the school's administration to "immediately consider" moving the school's football program back to the FCS after one year at the FBS level (MASSLIVE.com, 1/31).

Agree Moose.  They should re-vote that one.  They have no fans for FBS football.  UMass would be decent addition to the league if they ever got things together and focused the resources on sports like basketball, hockey and lacrosse.  They got 2 of them right.

St. John's in the ACC?  ;D :2funny: Catholic 7 will create a better conference for basketball schools only. Another Common Conference.

Baldi a basketball league with the Catholic 7 and Butler/Xavier will be pretty good (not the ACC I concede, but pretty good).

Iona is where they belong. Adding Butler and Xavier is like putting a band aid on a guy who just got beheaded.
