Howland got the benefit of the doubt last year because of his reputation as terrific turnaround artist, his overall track record, his top class coming in and the fact that his AD Dan Guerrero didn't want another coaching search after just firing his football coach Neuheisal.  Howland is not going to get that benefit this time.

If Howland doesn't make it to NCAA's he's cooked.

UCLA will be fine.  They have a transfer playing his handful of games and three fantastic freshmen.  It will take some time for them to gel, but lookout come February.

Possibly, but there is a lot of pressure on these kids, and we don't know which direction it will turn. As we've seen here at SJ, super hyped freshman can become overwhelmed with the attention. Now, UCLA will have to play knowing that the guy who brought them out there could be fired in 4 months. Maybe sooner, who knows?

Hey P, what super hyped freshmen have we seen become overwhelmed here at SJ? For that matter who was over hyped? I don't even recall us getting a top 20 player.

Jr49, Felipe Lopez was the unanimous number one recruit. He was hyped like no other recruit had ever been. True story.
Once he arrived along with two addition top 100 recruits, (Zendon Hamilton was #11) they helped form the most overrated and underachieving SJ's team ever.

Felipe was ranked higher than Iverson his Sr. year.  I always compared the two their Freshman ans Soph years.  Obviously Iverson was the real deal.  Felipe was a real disappointment. 

I didn't follow ratings back then and didn't realize at the time that Zendon was that highly rated.  He certainly wasn't as hyped as Felipe.

As to top 20s SJU  has had what 11 or 12 McDonald AA you can rest assured a goodly number were top 20s.

Felipe Lopez averaged 17.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a frosh while shooting over 40% from the field.  If the UCLA freshmen do that poorly, they will be headed pretty deep into the tournament.

Stats lie. No more so than the Felipe/Zendon years. Two players who did zero of the little things you need to win.

Both Red Vet and Poison. You both right in my remarks about not getting any top 20"s. I was limiting myself to the recent history or I would not have had to go back as far FL and ZH. Barkley and Artest were top players, but certainly not the wilting kind. The little lefty that coach Hurly sent us musta been MacD all-American as a favor to him. Now, Lopez and Hamilton went out there as freshman with little coaching, and no point guard. I don't know if they fit your description as having wilted under pressure. Z had a long run in the NBA and Lopez went first round, but I don't believe we ever got to see him healthy as a pro. 
    We will get to see how Bens kids take to his coaching. I always figured the guy could coach, and certainly never pictured him getting the boot. Sure hope we get RJ. A top PG makes you feel your on your way.

How was Felipe a huge disappointment?  He averaged 17.8 ppg as a frosh!  He was a fist round draft pick and put together a decent NBA career.  Felipe was physically advanced than some of the youngers kids he was going against.  He was ready for college immediately and was overrated by scouts because of his college ready game.  Players with higher ceilings caught up to him after a few years. 

Lenny Cooke was a huge disappointment. Felipe was not.

I said "real" disappointment--not "huge."  Nonetheless, being the No. 1 recruit in the Country, I expected a Mullin-like career.  I actually thought, going in,  that in his time here, he would take us to another Final Four or possibly the NC.

Felipe did have a very good freshman year, including a few games where he looked like the player he was hyped to be coming out of high school. Unfortunately, I don't remember him really developing during his four years here ... which says a lot about the coaching staff we had at the time. (Same goes with Zendon Hamilton.) Just speculation of course, but I can't help but think that had Felipe played for the current coaching staff, his college career would have been much more like what we were all expecting/hoping it to be like. 

Freddy lyson was my favorite player- but he kind of sucked. Tarik turner may have been worse the geno. Can't remember all the players from that team but they weren't very good

He did have a very strong senior season.
The lesson here is that NYC are over-hyped and overrated.

He is the greatest example of that. I'm thrilled that Lavin
isn't sucking on their balls anymore. They all leave for all I care.

Lopez was good in his senior year, but his sophomore and junior years were not as good as his freshman year.  I'm sure someone will post his stats to demonstrate this point.
