Jones 2RPG is the reason he isn't playing. He doesn't do anything else exceptionally well, yet. I like Jones a lot and think he has a good calmness about him when he has the ball but he needs to do more to earn playing time. Lav has shown playing time can be earned, see Balamou who averages same rebounds and is statistically better than Jones in every aspect.

It's early in the year and he's a true freshman. 15mpg and 1 DNP is pretty good.

I know he's a freshman, and I know its been 10 games. But I'm shocked at how bad Jones has looked these last few games. His blown dunk was crazy.

The thing that bothers me most about Jones is that it is not about skill.  The kid has both athleticism and skill.  He has the tools to be a very good player.  How many guys can make this midrange jumpers like he can and take off from the FT line?  He's also built like a truck.  He just needs to want it more and go out the and be a killer.  I hate seeing talented kids waste their skill because they don't play with fire.

Chris looks like a guy who was not highly recruited--oops he wasn't highlu recruited; maybe this is why

Agree.  Just tough to watch because he has twice the skill of many power forward recruits that have come through here.  Kid doesn't seem to want it.  He can out jump just about anybody at his position, shoot and everything else.

Saying he "doesn't want it" might be the wrong choice of words. He isn't exactly a PF but he's playing as one. Same can be said of Garrett and Sampson too.

Just as some guys have knack for rebounding other guys simply don't. Jones may or may not be one of those guys but a point of emphasis needs to stressed on rebounding the ball.

QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2012 (AP) - Rookie gamechanger Chris Obekpa let the world in on the secret of what shot blockers are thinking about as they go about harassing shooters.

"Nothing," the St. John's freshman said after breaking his own school record of eight blocks, rejecting 11 in a 58-47 victory over Fordham on Saturday night in the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival.

"I just play good defense and I'm trying to block everything, but I try not to get in foul trouble," said the 6-foot-9 native of Nigeria, who also had seven points and five rebounds.

The Red Storm set a school record for blocks, finishing with 15, two more than the mark set in 1982.

"He's unique. I've never seen anything quite like Chris," Red Storm coach Steve Lavin said. "He doesn't have the Tyson Chandler 7-foot-1 wing span. It's a combination of his basketball intellect and his length and timing. That is what separates him from anyone I've seen with his physical makeup."

Classmate JaKarr Sampson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Storm (7-3), which won for the fifth time in six games. It was Sampson's second-career double-double, and second in three games.

"When Chris blocks a shot it gets us all energized, it's like a dunk on defense," Sampson said. "It makes us want to play defense and be there with him defensively."

St. John's took the lead for good with the first points of an 11-3 run that gave the Red Storm a 49-41 lead with 5:31 to play. Fordham was never able to get closer than five points the rest of the way. Sampson had six points in the run, including the two free throws that started it and the layup that ended it.

"JaKarr found his rhythm in the second half and made some shots," Lavin said of Sampson who had four points on 2-of-10 shooting at halftime. "The first half was probably our poorest performance of the year."

Ryan Canty, Fordham's center who has improved tremendously over the last three games, had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Rams (1-8), who have lost five straight.

Jeffrey Short had six points and 11 rebounds for Fordham, which finished with 56-40 rebound advantage, 24-17 on the offensive end.

St. John's, which came into the game shooting 46.2 percent from the field, had its worst shooting game of the season, connecting on 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the floor. The Red Storm's prior worst night this season was 36.7 percent against NJIT.

That was nothing compared to Fordham's season-worst 3-for-21 effort from 3-point range. The Rams came into the game shooting 32.1 percent from beyond the arc. They had 23 turnovers matching their season high set in the first game of the season against Texas State.

St. John's will meet longtime interborough rival St. Francis in the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at the new Barclays Center on Sat., Dec. 15. The Red Storm meets the Terriers at 5 p.m. in a tripleheader, which will also feature Michigan vs. WVU at 7:30 p.m. and Fordham vs. Princeton earlier at 2:30 p.m.

D'Lo needs to get himself under control.  Doing that shit isn't going to fly.  Should sit next game but that won't make it any better.  I don't know the kid.  If he can't get along with Lavin he can't get along with anybody.  Any other coach would keep him in doghouse forever.  D'Lo as good as he is is also a big cause of our ills and lack of discipline.  Love his fire, but not when it is self and team-destructive.

Dr3w: on marco being soft: what do you really expect from the French? Its their nature....very happy I didn't have to walk out the garden with my tail between my legs....gotta right this ship, quickly

The French are soft? That's why Marco stinks? Nevermind the gross generalization, but why doesn't Tony Parker suck?

Because the suckiness of Frederich Weis and Jerome Moiso more than cancels out Parkers non-suckiness!  :)

Only good thing about this game was Chris O's block party with a little JaKarr double double sprinkled in. If Dlo keeps this up he risks getting dismissed from the team IMHO. After all he has been suspended for all or part of games or held out of starting line-up numerous times. Where do you go from here? May be best thing if he does leave after this season for the sake of team chemistry, especially if we can sign Jordan.

Well if it hasn't happened yet, it may be time for a intervention/sit down with the young man. Lav, Rico, Darrick and GK should pull him into the office and explain to him that between them they know how to get guys to the next level, at some point a team will call coach and ask about D'lo, does he want a respected coach like Lav or Rico to tell  front office guy that he is not worth the risk? He has a chance to go down in the STJ's record books if he stays and keeps his "emotions" in check and make some money here or most likely overseas. I do feel that if he becomes a cancer that is causing this team to lose focus that maybe we (team) should part ways, if we are going to lose i rather lose with a team of unselfish players who are focused on team basketball. And trust me last year i was a hugh fan of D'lo and want him to turn around and become a STJ's great i just hope he has it in him to do it. I also feel most STJ's fans feel the same about the young man.

I'd be shocked if Jones doesn't bolt.  He looks away during team huddles, he knows GG will be playing next year, and his head was filled with visions of stardom early this season by Lavin and many others.  Honestly, we're probably better off if he does.  The JUCO ranks are filled with kids that will go after the ball with reckless abandon play after play.

It's December 8th, Jones is 10 games into his freshman career, and you think he should transfer based upon his body language during time outs and good riddance. Good grief.

Quote
If Garrett had his body he'd be leading the country in rebounds.

If not for your assurances that you're nearly always right about almost everything this statement might seem completely absurd.

ON a deeper team, guys like Jones and Felix likely would have been redshirting. We don't have that luxury yet as the roster is still in its infancy stage. I think Jones learns to rebound and he already has a smoothness to his offensive game although he will get more comfortable as he adapts to the speed of the college game.

We need Sanchez in the worst way. We need Rebounding and a player that can play out of the post.
