Best SJU game coach

Thought this would be interesting considering all of the talk of whether Lavin is a good game coach or not. Again this is your opinion on best game coach, not most successful. Interested to see how this turns out.

I personally think Jarvis' elite 8 team was the best coached St Johns team I have ever seen. Short bench, kids never took a play off, and passed like no other. May not be a popular choice but it was a wonderful season to watch.

I actually agree, though I voted for Fran. People will argue that the team was so unselfish and smart that Jarvis just let them play. The Jarvis teams after Barkley left certainly did not play the same way, even the year with Cook. Argument for Jarvis is I don't think that team comes close to an Elite 8 with a Mahoney or Norm coaching them.

Fran had a junior team w all Americans and couldn't sniff the NIT. He lost to LIU and Rutgers.

Did someone say Lapchick? Hall of Fame coach, won the Holiday Festival and the NIT when both were bigger than the NCAA's.

Artest led the team and he was the one who had the most impact.  He spoke and they listened

In retrospect, probably not the greatest idea.  ;D

Coach Lou. Didnt make much adjustments, stuck to what he thought was a winnin formula that was good enuf to be a Top 25 program but never good enuf to get over the hump - same way wit recruitin. 'Cept fo that Sweet 16 game against OhioSt in '92 when he surprise evryone and attack the press wit abandon. Thought he also handle his players the right way.

Best coachin in one season: Coach Mahoney in '93. Say what you want, but he got the most out of the least talented STJ squad in some time.

David Cain!

No doubt. Cain made things click but in the pantheon of STJ points he isnt up there. He had his limitation, a slow PG who couldnt hit a three and was awful his first 3 season and wudnt drafted.

Only player to sniff the League on that team was Shawnelle.

Sorry for double post.
I thought Sealy Elite 8 team and the year after the Final Four were Louie's best coaching jobs. We ran into a NFL front line against Auburn and season ended early, but I thought the Berry team was actually more fun to watch then the Final Four team. Louie loosened up a bit and we ran more. That team might have had the most dunks in school history.

Don't disagree with any of that, but for whatever reason Cain's senior year might be the best one year of any point guard play that we have ever had.

Tru.

But Coach Mahoney handled that team so well.

Evrybdy had they roles and played it to the fullest.

Shawnelle: Was suppose to be the star was a good low post scorer and rebounder.
Lamont Middleton/Mitch Foster: Just do the dirty work my brothers. Rebound, defend and set picks. Do it so well.
Fred Lyson/Sergio Luyk: Dont take a shot from 19' in and we all good.
Derek Brown: We gonna let you work yo natural talent and hopefully take over some games.
Lee Green/Carl Beckett/Rowan Barrett: Perimeter D and nuthin else, please.

Was WASJU's original Larry Wright. I thought he was going to have a much better career. Louie didn't play him enough his frosh season, had good solid Soph year, got hurt than Mahoney misused him at the point.

Agree, aside from his many other shortcomings, Jarvis was an excellent in game coach.  That elite 8 team had the best offense that I had ever seen at this school.  Our dominance of Maryland, Indiana and Yukon in the BE tourney was a tribute to his coaching on the sidelines.

Poll asks best coach ever, and the answer is clearly Lapchick. Hall of Fame, pros and SJU, championship seasons. Over many many years.

Not one of the choices and besides anyone who was around for Lapchick probably needs someone to turn the computer on for them. No offense to anyone who had someone turn their computer on for them.
