Phil Greene v Paris Horne (Fr-So)

Each player is the complimentary guard on the team. While they are different style players they do share some similar struggles shooting from the perimeter.

How do you think they compare within their first two years and what can Greene learn from Paris' game?

Based strictly on the numbers Horne was better in every category.  With Greene I feel it's just a matter of consistency.  He shows flashes of being a productive member of the offense, and at other times seems he doesn't belong (essentially his shot doesn't fall and he makes some bonehead plays).  That being said, he was also thrown into 30 minutes a game from day 1 and wasn't given/doesn't have a true guard position.  I think given time his numbers the next couple of years will more closely reflect those of Horne's sophomore year, or at least the shooting percentages.

*Shouldn't have said every category.  Greene leads in assists and slightly in turnovers.

Felix reminds me a lot of Paris during his Freshman year.  Obviously he doesn't have the 3 point stroke Paris had but similar type of player.  Phil's problem is he never beats guys off the dribble so all of his shots are jumpers which leads to his low shooting percentage.  I can't remember the last time Phil had a layup.

Even if Horne never developed a acceptable jumper he was going to be a productive player. Greene played ok yesterday but really does nothing well. My friend stat sheet seconds my opinion. I am not sure why people continue to see something that is not there. If a player has 3 or 4 good games and 26 terrible ones then he is terrible.

I wouldn't say he is terrible but I think he is being given a role on the team that he doesn't qualify for. Honestly I would rather have Amir have his minutes.

Offensively, Greene isn't as good as Geno was as a Soph. That is a tad scary.

Yeah a little harsh. As you said he is terrible in the role that he has been given.

Agree with Ted here.  I don't think Greene is terrible.  He's just not terribly efficient as a pg.  his numbers aren't real good.  He does do some good things and has had some big games for us.  He's a proficient ball handler and I think fits in well as a backup combo guard.  Amir needs some of his minutes because of his height, athleticism and rebounding ability.  Amir is tough up front and we need that.  He can also pass pretty well.

I rather develop Felix, send Phil to the NEC or MEAC, he'll look amazing there.. Amir deserves 22+ though.

He has to play him some minutes, but I think Balamou could certainly handle some of his minutes.

This team does not have a lot of ball handlers.  You guys are way too harsh on Phil.  I'm not ashamed to say I love me some PG4

Phil was not a top tier recruit and his play speaks to that. He is only a soph, but his lack of speed and penetration are concerns. That said he will be a capable bench player over his career. What happened to his tear drop floater? I thought Horne had more ability on D end than Phil for sure.

I'm more forgiving concerning his speed. He's playing hurt. It's his inability to play the point guard position that the problem. Horne looks better in retrospect because Horne played where he belonged. He certainly couldn't have ran the point. Not for a minute as a Soph.

You want Greene to transfer to the lowest level of D1 basketball?!?

While I'd prefer to have Branch out on the floor more this was due to Phil having hot hand.

I share some of your sentiments. I don't think Greene is terrible but I do think he needs to solely play to his strengths.

-The floater/tear drop in the lane is really nice. He has very good body control when leaving his feet in the lane.
-Crossing over to his left, step back jumper on the left side of the basket is his go to shot.
-Wide open set shots he's improving on, similar to Horne its either on or way way off.

Horne was pushed into a bigger role his sophomore year out of necessity while Greene was forced to do the same his freshman year. It's interesting to see how that will develop.

If PG4 and Sampson are hitting their shots, they can bust a zone up with a screen or two.  Their long range twos aren't something you see from fresh/sophs.
