Phil Greene as a good 2guard is a myth that has taken off in the last few weeks, since he's been playing "off the ball" more.

Good shooting guards, can, ya know... shoot!   We're so thirsty for guys who can score, that we're beginning to treat 5-14 as an acceptable performance.  Even congratulating him on it.

I want Phil to do well, I root for all the guys on our team... and he seems to have been a model student-athlete since he's been here.
But, he's 16-48 during this 5 game win streak (33%), and 2-16 beyond the arc (12%!)

He's not peaking, he's slumping.   Call it what it is.

Past 7 games has only committed 2 turnovers. Played 43 min of mistake free ball against tonight. (DePaul)

[tweet]https://twitter.com/DaveKrupinski/status/296850467219206144[/tweet]

Two plays stick out in my mind last night...in the first half, he came off a high screen, Marco's man dropped off on him, and Marco was as open at the three point line as I can remember all season. Greene never even saw him. Then in the second half or OT, same thing...Branch is on the wing, sets his guy up beautifully by taking him out on the wing then cutting back door. He is WIDE open and Greene has a huge lane between defenders to deliver the ball. Nothing.

Remember the play and screaming for him to pass..I can't believe that he did not see him...was looking right at him..

Right after that happened Phil realized he missed him and you could see him with a huge grimace on his face.

Yes,  the Rectangle once again had a poor shooting night.  However,  he shot better than Jakarr, CO and the Aggie.  Where are the posts about their poor shooting from the field?  Not gonna happen as somehow Greene is the designated board whipping boy. Hollwood has good reason for playing Phil more than any other player last night.  Thankfully he makes the calls. If you guys were coaching, Phil would be on the bench and we'ld be losing.

Keep up the good work and stay strong Phil.  Stay strong!

Carmine, there are 4786 posts about how bad of a shooting team we are sometimes.  People call out Obekpa constantly, and Amir and Dom have had their shooting woes dissected for a year and a half now.   We don't just pick on Phil.
And actually in the POG theead I said "Dom gets my vote bc he scored roughly the same amount of points as Jakarr, and took 1/3 the shots."
Don't act like Jakarr doesn't get criticized for his shooting, half the tri-state area wants to change his release.

Carmine
You are better than this!
Anyone can have a bad shooting game. Green has had a bad shooting career. I do predict he shoots over 50% against Gtown for just the 6th time this season which should give you a nice chubby.

Let me put an end to a certain poster and his love fest with our good ole friend Mr Statistics.

All of our players shoot 42% or better from the field.

EXCEPT

Phil Greene at 37% and Marco at 32%.  Phil is 3rd on the team in FGA and has 100 shot lead on the next closest player Amir.

Maybe Phil should cool it with his trigger finger.

All I know is the lineup is working with Phil in the lineup. I want Amir to get more minutes because I think he does more things to help us win. The best thing about Phil is he doesn't turn it over. Usually though when he is hot, he is someone who helps us win. On nights when he is off, he hurts the team like the DePaul game in Chicago.

Greene should be out there, but he needs to put the ball on the floor and penetrate more. Him settling for jumpers regularly isn't the offense we want to run. When our guards penetrate good things happen. I thought Greene played pretty well vs Depaul. We will need his offense to be sharp to beat GTown.

Mini TOT
It is the Hagler vs Hearns of terrible shooters. Carmine's wet dream. The circle vs the push shot. Let's get it on!

SHOOTING-This one was close. Patterson shot 35.7% in his one glorious season. The Circle for his career is at 37%. While that looks like a win for the circle, two years worth of awful shooting beats one.
EDGE-slightly to PATTERSON

THREE POINT SHOOTING-Patterson shot a lot of them. It is not clear why as he shot them at a 32.7% clip. Eventually Norm even realized how terrible he was and yanked him from the starting lineup. Greene is actually a much worse shooter from three hitting them at a 26.5% clip for his career. Greene is much more comfortable missing from within the three point line.
EDGE-slightly Greene becuase at least he doesn't take many.

FREE THROW SHOOTING-Patterson was ok from the line(71.4%) but if he was on this team he would be considered Chris Mullin like. Greene's protective circle usually prevents him from venturing to close to the basket so he rarely goes to the line. He is ok when he gets there at 70.5%.
EDGE-Patterson

ANNOYING TRAITS-Patterson shot a 1950 skinny white guy with glasses, short short, Chuck Taylor sneaker style push shot. Greene sometimes dribbles in a circle for 30 seconds.
EDGE-I liked Hoosiers so Patterson

WINNER-Greene by 15 round split decison. After the win a bloodied Greene holds his Terrible Shooter championship belt over his head and yells"Yo Carmine I did it"

Defense: Greene's is really improving. Patterson played defense like a ballerina.

A more likely outcome is that each throws punches that fail to land until both are so exhausted that they can't lift their arms in victory and a draw is declared.

But seriously (no really) Anthony Mason Greene Jr the fourth is much better than Patterson. He did one thing poorly. Greene does a few things adequately.

I agree.
Much like Geno I think Greene is miscast in his role. Both would have been better off as a reserve guard off the bench. Both guys were given way too much responsibility. I think both Greene and Geno would have both been thought of in better terms if they had smaller roles.

Crazy how Phil continues to get raked over the coals on the board.  He was a vital component to the DePaul victory.

Greene has become the board's new Justin Burrell... oh joy.

Totally different!
Burrell was a good player. After his first season and based on how he looked, people's expectations were just too high. Burrell was good, people wanted him to be great. That is not the case with Phil.
