Crazy how Phil continues to get raked over the coals on the board.  He was a vital component to the DePaul victory.

Greene has become the board's new Justin Burrell... oh joy.

Totally different!
Burrell was a good player. After his first season and based on how he looked, people's expectations were just too high. Burrell was good, people wanted him to be great. That is not the case with Phil.

Meant more in terms of numerous threads and posts on said players...

I think Phil is a good basketball player. Def not great.  He wasn't brought in here as great. Most of his time here he has been forced to play out of position, and this season, hurt.  I like the role he is in now, 3rd guard.  His game is what it is.  The fact that he doesn't turn the ball over is tremendous.  Branch ball handling and decision making under pressure scares me.

Burrell?
I'd say Evans, no?

All of the Evans posts were from Bobre...  Everyone kills Phil,  almost daily.

Hope he doesn't read this dribble ( pun intended),  it's embarrassing.

Let me put an end to a certain poster and his love fest with our good ole friend Mr Statistics.

All of our players shoot 42% or better from the field.

EXCEPT

Phil Greene at 37% and Marco at 32%.  Phil is 3rd on the team in FGA and has 100 shot lead on the next closest player Amir.

Maybe Phil should cool it with his trigger finger.

That is a big detraction. Greene needs to improve his shooting and shot selection.

-Phil is so much better shooting while going to his left. (I need a shot chart)
-His 3pt% is awful

If my memory is not failing me, Phil has had two consecutive years of early success.  He has had these early games where he has looked awesome, then over the course of the season he has left most of us shaking our heads wondering "where has that guy gone?"  I thought he said early on this season that he was dealing with a wrist/hand injury last year and that is why he didn't shoot it well.  Will the hip be the reason this year?  When you have your best game of the season early on, I think you leave the fans wondering where is that performance for the rest of the season.  Maybe Phil need to pace himself :)

Carmine
You are better than this!

Really, I'm not.

But Carmine, I'd still take Greene over Avery Patterson.

Very different players with very different games.  One an all-time great in one season.  One it will probably take 4 seasons for him to get his just due.

The official statistical Jamal Branch - Phil Green Comparison.

What does it mean when your season long +/- is 0 (actually -0.1)?

If the rhombus is so bad, then why does Hollywood leave him on the floor the entire game?  And why are we in 3rd place in the BE when we were predicted near the bottom?

Phil gets more press on the board than all the rest of the players combined.  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BAD PRESS.  My diabolical plot is working!

I guess it depends on your definition of "getting raked over the coals", but I dont think the commentary re PG4 is unfair or excessive. Only one person that i can think of has said they dont think he belongs here. I think a good many people think his minutes - second on the team to DLo- arent justified by his play. Unfortunately anyone who points that out is labeled a "hater", and whenever he plays well the contrarians feel the need to prove the "haters", who arent haters, wrong. Round and round we go.

I thought Desco summed it up perfectly. I like Phil a lot as a kid. Seems like a great guy, hard worker, definitely came in as a the lowest rated recruit and has been a big part of the success. I want him to do well and if he does, I'm not going to spin it like its no big deal because I've been critical of him in the past. I felt the same way about Dom when he was struggling...his play was frustrating to watch but he seemed like a class A individual. Now that he's playing well, I'm happy to say so, and it doesnt mean any critique of him was wrong at the time. He's playing better.

I thought any criticism of Phil last year was unfair because he was a frosh, playing out of position. "Best thing about a freshman is they become a sophomore" and all that. But with all the PT he got last year and he's gotten this year, his basketball IQ, understanding of his role, understanding of spacing and shot clock management should really have progressed by now and it hasnt. He actually showed some flashes in the second half of last year but seems to have regressed a little. All that stuff about not turning the ball over is great but do you know how hard it is to be on the floor for 43 minutes with the ball in your hand as much as he had it and have only two assists? They dont even to be real assists, in 43 minutes you should have at least 4 or 5 of the "last guy to touch the ball before the scorer" kind. Branch may turn it over sometimes, but he's trying to make things happen. An off balance, contested jumper with the shot clock expiring is pretty much the same as a turnover. Hopefully he'll learn to create a little and improve his shooting ( and shot selection) and he'll be a big part of two or three tournament teams. If he does I'll be the first one to say so.

The oval is a very good passer.  Did you see the beautiful feed late to the Aggie right under the basket?  Unfortunately, Branch got his shot blocked twice and we went to overtime.

Are you kidding me carmine? You bring up the play in which Phil made the pass to branch 4 seconds to late? He was WIDE open. Instead phil decided to try to shoot (similar to the first half when he ignored marco who was WIDE open, only to take a horrid shot), but decided in mid air to make the pass. By then it was too late and the defender blocked Jamal's shot, twice.

But Carmine, I'd still take Greene over Avery Patterson. -Poison

Mini TOT
It is the Hagler vs Hearns of terrible shooters. Carmine's wet dream. The circle vs the push shot. Let's get it on!

SHOOTING-This one was close. Patterson shot 35.7% in his one glorious season. The Circle for his career is at 37%. While that looks like a win for the circle, two years worth of awful shooting beats one.
EDGE-slightly to PATTERSON

THREE POINT SHOOTING-Patterson shot a lot of them. It is not clear why as he shot them at a 32.7% clip. Eventually Norm even realized how terrible he was and yanked him from the starting lineup. Greene is actually a much worse shooter from three hitting them at a 26.5% clip for his career. Greene is much more comfortable missing from within the three point line.
EDGE-slightly Greene becuase at least he doesn't take many.

FREE THROW SHOOTING-Patterson was ok from the line(71.4%) but if he was on this team he would be considered Chris Mullin like. Greene's protective circle usually prevents him from venturing to close to the basket so he rarely goes to the line. He is ok when he gets there at 70.5%.
EDGE-Patterson

ANNOYING TRAITS-Patterson shot a 1950 skinny white guy with glasses, short short, Chuck Taylor sneaker style push shot. Greene sometimes dribbles in a circle for 30 seconds.
EDGE-I liked Hoosiers so Patterson

WINNER-Greene by 15 round split decison. After the win a bloodied Greene holds his Terrible Shooter championship belt over his head and yells"Yo Carmine I did it"

Defense: Greene's is really improving. Patterson played defense like a ballerina.

Patterson was actually a really good defensive rebounded, for what ever that is worth.

Phil Greene is a good passer? That might be the funniest thing I've heard all day. If there's one thing Greene has proven, it's that he has pretty poor court vision. He has trouble finding open teammates.

And I'm not a Phil basher. I think he does a lot of things well. I think he's a good mid-range shooter and a decent 3pt shooter. I know his percentages are down but I still think he's a good shooter. I think he plays good defense, and I think he can be crafty around the rim with the floater and with layups. Overall he's a positive contributor to the team. But please, he's not a very good passer.

True, but that's because he doesn't give anyone else a chance once he gets the ball.   ;)
