SJU local recruiting advantage?
« on: February 07, 2013, 02:28:25 PM »
So says Pitino.  Fancy way of saying that hiring Lavin has expanded SJU's recruiting reach nationally:

Moving forward, Pitino said he believes St. John’s is in a “unique situation” and has a recruiting edge over other schools, including local rivals Seton Hall and Rutgers (12-9, 3-7), losers of five straight.

“Look at recruiting this way, you have a 48-hour visit, you may be dealing with 36 hours really to impress a young person,” Pitino said. “So when you go and you see the facilities in a 36-hour span, you have to say to yourself, ‘ What attracts a young person?’ Well, it’s New York City, it’s Madison Square Garden, it’s the greatest city in the world.

“So they’ve got a little bit of an edge there in terms of recruits and that’s probably the difference-maker.”

He added: “St. John’s has stepped away from the Catholic-school kids and…they’ve enhanced their recruiting base and I think that’s an extremely smart thing to do.”

I am huge Coach P fan, I think he is the best in the business, but even he is not believing his own BS on this one.

If he really thought this way, he would be the coach at SJU right now.

Well no.  The problem is he decided for a nightcap on the booth at the Italian restaurant and after that no way would a catholic school touch him.

I am too, and I think he's genuine in his comments about SJU.   What's in it for him to compliment us?
He's done it consistently for a long time now, I think he just sees St Johns as a program with a lot of potential.

Maybe if we could have afforded him he would be our coach right now?  Who knows..
But we were never going to pay him $3million a year, so there wasn't much for him to think about, know what I mean?

I think you misread. All it says is that SJ has a "little bit of an edge" over the other C7 schools because of NYC. It doesn't say SJ has an advantage over Louisville and other schools that offer signing bonuses.

Bingo, that's my point.  He never said SJU had an edge over Duke or Kentucky or Louisville (which is one of the top 10 jobs in the country).

It shouldn't matter where we get kids.  Whether it be, home or away, just bring in the best that fit what we are trying to do.  I look at UNC, and although they bring in great playing kids, it just doesnt seem to fit what UNC is trying to do.  Yes, they make the tourny every year but they are expected to be in top 10 every year and compete for NC.  I do think that recruiting kids from home should give us an advantage at landing them but even in SJU glory days we lost out on some of the best NYC had to offer.  If NYC kids dont want to come, there is plenty in NJ to go after to help this team win.

I think he always had a soft spot for SJU and MSG. Depending on timing and his availability, if there was a Repole around, minus a Harrington, and minus his escapade outside his marriage, he would've loved being the SJU coach. The stars were never properly alligned. Just another opportunity for us to have risen to the top of the basketball world ie. signing Alcindor, that never materialized.
