Amir Garrett Next Year

I love how hard this kid plays all the time but does anyone else think he will not be on the team next year.

I think his basketball skill set is clearly limited and his potential to be a professional player is in baseball.

I think he will continue playing basketball, there is zero financial incentive to give up basketball for baseball.

With that said, I am not 100% positive he comes back. I am alarmed how much his minutes have dropped and I think this is a huge error on the part of the staff. He clearly brings more to the table on most nights than Phil in my opinion.

I think he gives it one more year. If Harrison leaves for whatever reason and or Sampson decides to be a 2nd round draft pick Garrett's minutes will go way up.

Garrett really hasn't improved much, but that shouldn't be a shock to all of us, because we know that he used the summer for baseball. I will say that I don't agree about upside. He can work on his 3 point shot, and right handed dribbling. He could be a 3rd team BE player by senior year.

Either way, I hope he stays, because he plays hard, and he has no fear going up against larger players.

There were questions like this that arose last year as well. From what I've gathered is that his situation will remain the same.

He has a 1 million dollar contract (signing bonus). Because he was a two way NCAA player he got a lot more money than one with his baseball talents normally deserve as they canm spread the bonus out over 5 years. Minor league baseball players all earn the same with only the bonus different. If he goes full time to baseball he will just earn a little more. I venture to guess less than 5k a year.

The only upside to leaving basketball would be the speed up his baseball career but the odds are so stacked against any baseball player. I think the stats say that less than 3% of those drafted ever reach the majors.

In my opinion he hasn't developed much from freshman year to sophmore year because he wasn't playing basketball. You can see the difference between him and Dom in terms of development.

I really hope Amir puts in 4 years at St Johns. Kids like him become big stories and contributors as upper classman.       

I love Amir's attitude and grit.

When no one else is rebounding he can be and has been a sparkplug.

The opposition however has his number - lefty layup.

If he can improve his short j and foul shot (52%) he can be a valuable cog in the machine.

I get nervous when AG takes a 3 although in stats (33% for only 2/6) he reads better than DLo (32%).

I personally hope he has a very good summer playing baseball and gets to the majors for good.

I think the team would be better if Felix and Christian got his minutes. They both have a higher ceiling and are more productive offensively

Has Felix scored in double figures yet? Has Christian? That's a bold statement to say they're better. Maybe they could be productive one day, but right now, both guys are pretty raw. Garrett is raw too, but he rebounds, and he defends.

Jones doesnt get nearly the minutes he should and barely any touches when he does play.
He is more polished and versatile offensively than Garrett and would score more if he got more touches.

Jones offensive game is more refined than amirs but no one brings the toughness that he does (sans dlo).

Amir is listed by the scouts as 20th among potential on the Reds with below average skills currently and having the potential to be above average.  He in all likelihood will go to their rookie level team, similar to the Cyclones, where he pitched twice last year and which plays a short season from late June to beginnig of September.  This fits perfectly with his college schedule as he will have 4 to 5 weeks of "spring" training and return to classes after the first week.  If he were to be gangbusters on the mound, he might not return but I don't see that happening.  He comes back for one more season after which he has a big decision; don't finish the semester but leave after the last game or finish because he will return for his senior year.  The summer "after" his junior year is the critical one as he will be moving to a full season level in the minors.

Absolutely disagree.  Garrett can drive the ball as well as anyone on the roster.  He also has a decent set shot out to three and nobody can do what he does under the offensive glass.  This kid needs to find his place, and I think he will.  He desperately needs 15-20 pounds to be more successful as our junkyard dog.  He and Sampson are the only two guys that hit he offensive glass EVER, and Sampson is usually floating on the perimeter or near the FT line. 

Our lack of rebounding and Sampson's outside shooting have forced Garrett to live under the glass. He deserves more looks and more minutes.  As the teams starts to move the ball beter, Garett will show us his worth.

A lot of Amir's offense comes off his own sweat. If Jones can only score when everyone else does the hard work for him, he will play 2-3 minutes per game. Because we don't shoot well, we needs guys out there who do a little of everything. Right now, that isn't Jones.

I would like to see Jones earn more minutes, but so far, he hasn't shown me that he deserves them. Let me see some rebounding. I guy that strong should be ripping em down w authority.

Listen, I'm a big fan of Amir. What he does well is work the baseline better than anyone else we have. His jumper needs work but it isn't all that bad, when he has good rhythm he hits a good %. The bad thing is that he has never once with his right hand; made a shot, delivered a pass, or take three consecutive dribbles. He is our best rebounder and one of if not our best finisher but his offensive game is not refined.

Jones shoots a better jumper and has a softer touch than Amir. Both of them
arw decent passers ( thought Amir was better as a frosh) but I would give the edge to Christian.

I like them both. Both should be getting more minutes IMO.

All that said, he uses the rim as well as anybody wit that patented reverse lay, up and under move, baseline explosiveness.
