Hope we can avoid another beat down v. L'Ville this week. If we do manage to grab 10 wins in BE, I don't want to fail the "eye test" with one sided losses against GT, Cuse and Louisville. Let's compete Thursday. No moral victories please. Make it interesting at the least and gain some positive "mojo" going forward.

That's a great point.
I think we all expected a roller coaster in in conference play, we knew we'd lose some games - but we also thought we'd win some that we weren't supposed to.
That second part needs to kick in soon haha  ;)

I didn't expect to win.  The problem was they came out pretty strong.  Went to sleep.  Fell behind.  Finally got it together and cut it to 5.  And you actually started wondering if they could.  Then the wheels fell off and fell off hard as always.  Its maddening watching them play.

Without Harrison, this team would have 5 wins.

Don't think anyone in their right mind would question that this team would be much worse off without Harrison. But I think it is legitimate to question if he will ever have the right mindset to lead this basketball team. We talk about him being a 4-year player and expect him to be an integral part (if not, THE MAN) of our success over the next few years. His  body language when things get tough is frustrating to see, but that has been mentioned before. What I found disturbing was what happened during today's game. He hits a deep 3 with the shot clock winding down at the start of the 2nd half when we are showing signs of life. Instead of just locking and getting back to play D, he starts jawing it up with some hick Cuse fan in the front row. Dakic is an awful announcer, but he said it best today when he said it looks like D'Angelo is just concerned with playing for himself. I think Lavin, the coaching staff and the fans want D'Angelo to be the leader of this team because he has the best natural scoring ability. But I just don't think that leadership quality is in him. Not sure if this team will ever really go anywhere without a player who can lead this team and reign Harrison in. Hopefully Lavin will be able to do it, but as someone already mentioned it is difficult without Lav being there full-time as of yet for D'Angelo.

Additionally, just in terms of basketball. Our last 2 losses (@ Gtown and @Cuse) where we could have made a statement by pulling out a tough road win, our best player has flat out not shown up. In these 2 games combined, Harrison has scored a total of 20 points while shooting 7-25 from the field. Plain and simple, that's just not gonna get it done. Big-time players show up in big-time games. We have yet to see that out of Harrison...

Harrison showed up enough in our 7 wins. Hatten's senior season we won 7 games. Yes, Hatten was better, but Harrison isn't surrounded by experienced players to pick it up when he's having an off day. That much isn't his fault.

If you want to blame Harrison for his attitude, then apply Blake everywhere it belongs. There's no experience in the frontcourt. That's on the staff. Let them have it too.

No denying what he has brought to the table. Like I said, this team is nowhere without him. I guess I'm just asking too much from him to at least play like he did against ND when he has an "off game" in terms of scoring. That ND game he did the other things to help the team win. That's what the leader of a team does. As Lav said following the game, it was the most mature game in Harrison's career.

Just got ack from watching the game and here are my two cents worth of observations.

First, the good........

1. Jakar can play with anyone, with or without ( as there was none today) an offensive scheme.  The only negative with him is that if he gets too good he may opt to leave and there really is no one on the team or coming in to fill his shoes.

2. While Marco shot poorly, at least they looked for him.

3. Defense at times and defensive boards were not too bad, but again that old nemesis of the teams defending against the three reared it's ugly head.

Now the bad......

1.  How anyone on this site who has the least knowledge of this great game of basketball can watch as DLo continuously put up one bad forced shot after another, some from almost half court, and not be disgusted is beyond me. While I am sure that if DLo,  who actually shot us out of the game early, had Lavin on the sidelines, would have been yanked early on. If anyone noticed the looks on our players faces when he was hoisting up one 30 footer after another with little success, you could see the discouragement.  And please lets stop with the " who is supposed to take the shots" crap as basketball is supposed to be a "team" game, not a highlight show for one player ir another. While I expect Moose is going to jump to DLo's defense, I am not blaming DLo for this fiasco but the staff or allowing an offense to be based on whatever he wants to do with the ball.  Moving forward, if the staff does not correct this crap now, the few games we may win will not be worth the detrimental effect this will have on this team in the long run. If we are truly a "young team" as has been echoed by many the entire season, then this should be about building for the future, not about a few cheap wins letting one player have carte Blanche to do what he wants.  While I believe we are a year away from competing with the Cuse, if ths issue is not corrected, we may not compete for some time to come.

I won't jump to his defense.  I can't wait for him to leave.  I must be imagining that with him on the bench vs. Uconn they scored 15 straight on us.

I find it funny that is the thesis that you right for what is bad after today's game.  That you can pinpoint a loss like today on him is amazing.  But carry on.  I can't wait for when he's gone.  We can smile, hold hands, sing kumbaya and score 27 pts a game.

If a few momentum plays went our way I think it could've been a close game. Even though they were shooting deep threes, a lot of them were completely uncontested, that's unacceptable with guys like Southerland and Triche shooting them.

Not totally on him but he was a big part of it. It's not about winning or losing this game.  If you would take off your rose colored glasses when it comes to him you would see that he actually did take bad shots, lost the ball on several bad plays and it not the perfect player you make him out to be. Again, the staff needs to take control of the situation as his play at times is detrimental to the development of this team. And come on Moose, try to respond constructively instead of such foolish statements like, " I can't wait for him to leave".  I have read your posts often and most of the time they are on point but when it comes to DLO, you have stars in your eyes.

Harrison can't put it on the floor and get into the paint vs. good competition. When he doesn't play within himself he bounces it off his leg or falls down and his game no help to the other guys. I really like where the team is at outside of Harrison. When BE play started he took a step backwards. Coach Lavin talked him up big time. I guess he figured that was what Harrison needed to hear. Now it's a concern that he isn't going to land a job. I really hope that he responds to the staff and finishes up big time, getting offers he's happy with. I also hope we get a big time point guard here. With a fixed up Harrison we can still finish up 4-2.

I don't think that is the case...Harrison is the soul of this team and his attitude does mean something. But I do not thing he is the leader of this team that everybody wants him to be...I don't he can be that leader because he is too emotional. When he is on fire the whole team feeds off of that and they feel like no one can bear them. But when he is struggling or is frustrated he is not the person to rise above it, like a leader would...At this time I don't think he is CPT material, but that doesn't mean he is not a piece of the soul of the basketball team...

Dom needs to stop picking up cheap fouls and getting into foul trouble.  He's a major piece to the puzzle but lately is taking himself out of the game by picking up what I consider "dumb" fouls!!

Dom calls them dumb refs.  At least that's what I thought when I tried to read his lips.  I think they got one of the refs from the crowd - never saw him on TV before.

I do agree with you.  Dom's fast breaks in the second half when Jakkar finished were the only good part of a crappy afternoon.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. If the improvement we have seen keeps up, these next 2 years should be the best SJU has seen in over a decade.

I would not mind d'lo leaving after this year

Yes, he's stinking it up over the past few weeks, but the guy is second in BE in scoring going into this game. He's young and volatile and needs to mature.  We're a better team with him -- especially when his head is in the game.

Keep in mind, this is the second consecutive year his head coach has had significant off-court distractions. I'm hoping D'lo is back – older, smarter and with Coach Lavin's full attention.
I'll give you last year but coach just missed his first game of this season so what are you talking about 2nd consecutive season?

Not bashing Phil, but again he had a lot of shots, 13, and hit 4. Consider Sampson had 14 shots. I know Branch was out and Cuse plays zone, but you can't tell me this is a positive trend. You can't have a guy taking 13 or 14 shots a game, shooting 30%.
It's about 5 shots more than he should ever take and he should not be allowed to operate with a green light outside of 5 feet once we are beyond the 1st 6 minutes of the game...we cut the lead to 7 late in 2nd half and he comes down and throws up another brick...the staff needs to rein him in...

He's stinking it up the last few weeks because Coach has missed todays game. Has there been stuff going on for weeks. I think Harrison has had a poor BE season with a few occasions when he has lifted the level of his play. I think he misses us not having a penetrate and dish point guard. Hatten and Hill were guards who could play with the ball in their hands. Harrison can't. My concern is Harrison wants to play for pay and might be concerned about who's gonna make him offer. Steve has spoken great of the guy so I hope he's happy being here.

Wait a minute would you call his shots good shots?  And what attention does he deflect from others?  He is so busy forcing up bad shots, driving through traffic and losing the ball and having a crapy attitude, as pointed out by the announcers, that he gets all the Attention himself. If the rest of the team is afraid or hesitant to shoot, that's on the staff.  Most think that except for Sampson and Phil Green, who is shooting 18% from three, the rest of the team just stands around and defers to him and that's pretty poor basketball.  But for whatever reason, you defend his play no matter how poor it is so there is no use reasoning with you.  You know the old saying, there are none so blind as those who will not see. Or is it.... Don't confuse me with the facts, I've already made up my mind.

I might have stars in my eyes but your dazed and confused sweetheart.  The fact that people don't realize his presence on the floor deflects attention from others makes me wonder if you people who love to pick apart other posters have ever watched basketball before in your lives. When he isn't on the floor we are playing shorthanded offensively.  So learn to live with 'bad' shots as you call them.  I guess we could always hold onto the ball and get a shot clock violation instead of a bad shot.

I hope your feeling better by the way.

Linda, it was the craphead announcers with the bad attitude.  One was a Cuse grad and the other talked about Indiana all game long.

Dakich would have loved Harrison if Harrison was a farm boy from Indiana.

Don't use those guys to support your lousy case.

By the way...Harrison scored key baskets in key wins this season.  I like the Johnnies chances when he has the ball at the end of the game.

Your last line is funny. That's your mantra.

Should we give the ball to the guy shooting 18 percent in League games from 3? My oh might call me blinded or whatever other pot shots you care to take. But I'll take my odds with the ball in Harrison's hands being he's our best FT shooter. See Karr is great but he has to get the ball. Dee has the ball in his hands and doesn't need something to be created. I'm gonna stop now because I will start getting labeled a Kool Aid drinker again. I mean this site is pretty funny. Nobody can have an opinion. You have an opinion and your labeled as too positive and too negative. But one thing is for certain I'm here wins and losses. As for others.......

What I don't understand is why any one takes the time or effort to reply to anything Mirabella posts. If people stopped answering she/he would go away. Let's stop already. Enough drivel.
