Also, some kids come out early, can't contribute yet at that level, and are labelled as not good enough.  That label sticks and they never really get a 2nd opportunity.  That is less the case now with the NBDL and a more visible European League, where kids today can still work hard to earn a 2nd look.

Zags has a post saying this is a historically terrible draft. They said the same thing last year. These kids leaving early is to blame. Give a lot of those kids another year and two before they go pro and watch them blossom. Instead they draft them early and pay them millions to play in the nbdl.

It's hard not to sound offensive in saying this but with all due respect Sampson is not even close to ready, if he leaves it would be a colossal mistake.  It's not like Harkless whose draft status would have been aided by staying but from all accounts was going to get drafted in the 1st round (and was), although he's hardly tearing it up in the NBA, averaging about 5 points a game playing 20 minutes.   If Sampson left it'd be detrimental to his future career.

What are you talking about? Harkless is a great NBA player!

"St. John's forward Jakarr Sampson needs more attention. Despite getting left off the Freshman of the Year watch list, Sampson continues to make waves in the Big East. Prior to an eight-point performance over the weekend, he had averaged 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in his previous six games."

I hope Kar is back next year, and I think he will be.
But I've never understood how a player "ruins" his career by coming out early.
Maybe they could get more job security or more money guaranteed by waiting a year or two, but if you're going to be good enough to have an nba career, it'll happen either way.   You either end up having the talent or not.

It's not like Omar's not in the nba because he came out early.   He's not in the nba because he could never shoot well enough to be an nba point guard.

Omar was a lousy shooter but his passing was otherworldly.  I think he could play in the league if he fit into a team's roster.  Jakarr doesn't do anything exceptional at this point and I don't see him playing ahead of most guys his size unless he increases his range and strength.  Leaving would be a major mistake.

Where is Sampson going to play?  He is too small to play PF in the NBA (and can't score with his back to the basket) and he does not have near enough perimeter skills to play SF.  He would be nearly useless to any NBA team for 2-3 years.

Think about it...he hasn't shown any ability to cover SGs or even SFs, he turns the ball over anytime he handles in traffic with anything more than 2-3 dribbles, he's shooting a putrid 61% from the line, and he hasn't made a single trey all year.  And he's 195pounds soaking wet.

I think we all were scared by Moe jumping so soon, but Sampson is not Moe...at least not yet.  Lavin called Moe the most complete player he's ever recruited.  He handled like a guard, had a sweet stroke (albeit with below average results in his one year), and he rebounded like a big.  Sampson will be here at least one more year.

I think stats for 1st year players are slanted based on who they playin for. JaK go to guy for us, with coach giving him a free hand. If he playing for Kansas coach Self not so generous with the minutes and the free hand. The 5 pts and 3 boards might not be first round stuff.

Absolutely. Self grows and develops players as well as Anyone in the country.

Bingo

Here's a comparison to consider for you older folks. John Wallace as a freshman. Look at all of the skills he added to his game. He was a classic NBA tweeter.

anyone notice that JKS was the one the led the players to high-5 the "legends"? Amir and Dom came out first, headed straight to the layup line.  But JKS stopped to high-5 the guys. Amir and Dom ran back and the rest followed.

i really like him. seems like a great guy.

I loved John Wallace, but for all his skill he didn't have 1/10th the athleticism of Sampson.

Wallace could jump out of the gym. I think you're confusing him with JB Reafsnyder. Wallace was dunking on the entire league from day one. The point I'm making is that he stayed, and he added skills. Jakarr could be better than Wallace, provided he doesn't believe he's great now. Which, he isn't.

This from the "King's Court" on ESPN.com.  Doesn't mention Jakarr, but it's not a promising thought:

An NBA general manager told SNY.tv this week that the 2013 draft class is so weak that more than a half-dozen prospects in the 2014 class would be taken ahead of whomever is selected with the No. 1 pick this summer.

"As a result," the GM told the news outlet, "you're going to see a lot more guys putting their name in knowing they'll go higher in this draft, even though they may not be ready. [They know] next year's class has such incredible depth that they could actually play better and improve and drop their draft status next year."

The GM added that current high school seniors Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, Aaron Gordon, Noah Vonleh and Aaron and Andrew Harrison all would be selected ahead of anyone in the 2013 draft class. Interesting …

For once I could not agree with Poison more!  The steal and dunk Wallace had against the Lakers his rookie year for the knicks gave me goosebumps.  Mad hops.  Too bad it may have been the highlight of his pro career...

So Chad Ford has finally created a scouting report on Jakarr (and Obekpa). Obekpa is ranked 129 and Jakarr is ranked 135.

Wow, both Sampson and Obekpa could be 5th round selections, AKA, playing in South America, or maybe China.
