Moose,  did you expect classes to be evened out at this juncture?

Only last year we had 8 newcomers.  Can't happen overnight.

It can't happen overnight your right.  But you also might have a better idea and less question marks.  Like Gift could have played and maybe we landed someone in 13.  So add one to the 13 class.

Double edged sword.  Classes can even out quicker when guys leave early.  My dead horse I will beat is that 4 and possibly a 5th schollie might be available for '14.

Lets also say the 900 lb gorilla is Harrison.  If he's around I feel easier.  But if he isn't then the domino effect in terms of our returning pieces really concerns me.

We were young this year. Can't debate that. We lost be because we were to skinny and not skilled enough. With d-lo we were an up and coming team- maybe a tourney team. Without him we are just bad.

62% of Georgetown's minutes were played this year by freshmen and sophomores. Second time in five years Hoyas have no seniors.

I see Michigan having 72% of their mins played by freshmen and sophs, 97% including juniors.  Looks like the only seniors they have might be walkons.

I agree with your concern 100% and thought this issue would exist for years and still do. Not sure how to fix however, unless Greene, Dom, Opeka, Harrison and Garrett stay 4 years to build some stability and you are filling around them. Not even sure that helps, too many moving pieces graduating in next 2 years.

It's not just on the court were youth is important but off the court as well. Understanding how to balance practice and studies, etc. They learn how to be student athletes from the upper classmen. On the court, its skill. In 2 years I believe Lavin will be able to bring in higher quality players who are more well rounded and could contribute more right away. That's the difference between us and those other programs that were mentioned, but in time that will change. When Lavin took over he brought in the best players he could, and it started on the defensive end. Sure it hurts the eyes not being able to score, but by being able to stop other teams from scoring gave us a chance to win.

^^ This. While other teams also have a lot of young guys, the two schools referenced are established programs, with an established system, and while not overflowing with upperclassmen, the young players have had older players there to learn from. Last year we had all these guys come in who had never played college ball, they learned not from others, but from their too-frequent failures. Then another group of kids come in, and they have to learn from people who didn't have anybody to learn from. It's been tough but  I think next year, we being to reap the benefits from all the failures.

I'm one of the bigger Lavin apologists out there, and while I don't think he is a good in-game coach, I realize he had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get to where we are now, and deserves credit for that. We will have 6 top 100 recruits on the floor next year, who will have had ample time and experience to learn how to compete.

"we're a really young team" is quickly becoming lavin's "give the other team credit" which was norm's go to

it's embarrassing at this point.  accountability.  you're getting paid millions.

hope he doesn't have some lame excuse if things go south next year, which they better not

Oh you just wait on Lipscomb.  He'll probably score the game winning basket in the NCAA championship in two years after our lead guard, Jordan goes down.

I'm assuming Harrison comes back.
Edit: I should say former top 100 recruits

95% of St. John's minutes were played this year by freshmen and sophomores.

Out of a total of 6275 mins:
284 mins by Bourgault
4 mins by White

Might be the reason why coach played the Fr. Lipscomb over the Sr. White. Increase the number of mins played by underclassman.   ;D

It doesn't bother me as much as it does others. Excuse can not be used next year.

I'm not making excuses, but the team was young and inexperienced

Next year is sink or swim for Lavin. Can't use the "youngest team in the nation" quote when you are full of juniors and sophomores. Go out and prove that you can take this team to the next level.

Re: Youth

I too am tired of hearing "the youngest team....", but the fact remains that success is highly unlikely with such an inexperienced roster.  According to this http://statsheet.com/mcb/stattracker/experience/teams, we are the 5th youngest team based on minutes played (1.69), and were in reality younger.  Marco, our Junior, is in his first year of DI and our Senior is a walkon.  The next youngest BE team is Gtown more than .5 year more experience.  If you sort the chart by RPI, you see that only 5 of the top 25 are below 2.50, and only 1 is below 2 (MI at 1.82).  While our sophomores have played lots of minutes they haven't had 2 or 3 years of workouts and practices (which is where most improvement happens).

Welcome aboard, Steve (Lavin).  ;)  Just kidding, but someone would eventually make that accusation.  I agree completely with the point in your last sentence.  They have played a lot of minutes but the away from the game training is what is still lacking.  That is maginified by the fact that there was no senior leadership on the court to help them along these first two years.

My point is that sometimes during games, the opposition starts to assert itself and there is no seasoned leader to calm them down and right the ship.  They look like deer in the headlights and go down in flames.  (Enough metaphors for you?  ;D )

Go back and look at the thread I started early in the year entitled LEADER.  I made that same exact point. :)  (Marillac moment)
