Coach Lavin @ BTIG Charity Day
« on: May 14, 2013, 01:20:34 PM »
Coach Lavin is spending the afternoon at BTIG Charity Day.

It is one of the most high profile events on Wall Street every year; with a long list of celebrities lending a hand to raise money for multiple charirty organizations.

There a few pictures of Coach on Twitter with some poeple at the event.

I used to wrok with a lot of the senior people at BTIG at another firm. They should be commended for keeping this great day going for 12 years..!!!

Great event.

Not many college hoops groupies could out fan-boy Steve Starker.  Glad he is on Lav's team

“@STJCoachLavin: #Stjbb received official notice today from NCAA: Chris O'bekpa led CBB in shot blocking this past season. Congrats to the big fella! Kudos.”

This is the 2nd time in a month that I've seen Lavin type O'bekpa instead of Obekpa.  Does he really think his name has an apostrophe in it?

Funny how people tend to assume that coach is wrong.

Well the entire year he was Obekpa.  That was signed off on by the SID and the staff and if it was O'bekpa you would think it would have been corrected during the year.

No?

Not necessarily. Perhaps it was an oversight, or not an issue to those in the know to even correct. Happens all the time with individuals with uncommon names and pronouncations from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They assimilate to the culture they are in and except their name being mispronounced or misspelled. Yet when around people who are close to that person you hear the proper pronouncation.

This isn't the first or last time the SID info was incorrect, that's also common. If it was the first time Lavin mentioned the name like that then I could understand thinking it was a mistake. Second time however I would think its intentional. There is a undertone from some on the board who believe Lavin is a airhead and because of that unfair assessment, IMO, he often isn't given the benefit of doubt.

STJ has a pretty sharp SID. I'd refer to what he last referred to. Then again his nickname was O'Blockpa so maybe it's a play off that and nothing else

I think Lavs has adjusted nicely to NYC living!

Like I've said before.  I don't think he wants to go anywhere.  He has it good at SJU and a lot of incentive to win here.  If he wins big, he gets the keys here and builds his own legacy.

Fwiw, it's one of the things I like about Lavin the best which is that he always maintains good bonds with his former players.  Really builds comraderie for life with a lot of these guys and it's great to see guys like Evans, DJ, Horne working camps and going to dinner.  Love to see our SJU footprint extend further because we have never been one of those schools.  Really building pride amongst former players which is fantastic.

Agree, looks like he lost a bit this offseason from not just that picture, but the others he posted on twitter.

Sometimes cancer and post-cancer meds can balloon you up a little.   Happened to my brother with a similar cancer - and it took a year or so to get back to normal..   (I ballooned after MINE, but it had more to do with actually being able to eat and taste food again after a year and after having lost160 lbs in 3 months during radiation & chemo - whole different thing!)...
