Cause there is more provincial powers in the ACC.
Duke and UVA may get northeasters aplenty.
But UNC, State, Wake and the like wanna keep it where it is.

.....

Most of the ACC does not draw any fans up here. Pittsburgh barely draws fans at MSG.  I remember a sea of Red for the Hardy buzzer beater. The only ACC school that really draws is Syracuse, and they are a massive draw.  After that, it is Duke's fair weather fan base which is very marginal up here and if Duke had a bad year would drop off like a rock.  Even Uconn doesn't get any real draw at MSG any more.  UNC?  New Yorkers like the baby blue and the Jordan connection, but fan base still very limited here.

Idiots like Boeheim and Kryshitski can babble all they want.  The truth is that even with some major acquisitions by the ACC, I can't agree with Newsie's claim that this is a victory cry.  The overt begging for MSG by ACC coaches seems more like deparation to me.  Why are they trying so hard?  Why are they still worried about the lowly Big East?  I think we have more gravitas than many realize.

I'm not sure why that is though?  The ACC on paper looks excellent in the near future prior to pending retirement by Roy, Boeheim, Kryshitski, Pitino and the like, which will really cause trouble in the league.  I really think that for some reason they are really hoping that a Syracuse Trojan Horse is their gateway to more exposure and a better grip on college ball in NYC. Espn afraid to have their marquee basketball tournament relegated to Greensboro or the like.  We have never heard coach K and Boeheim petition this hard ever in recent years.

If we fill the seats at the Big East Tournament, and I think we will, we aren't going away like seem think.  There has been a lot of discussion about the value of MSG for St. John's.  I think it is readily apparent that MSG is the Sun of the basketball world.  Lavin seems to be in an extremely enviable position recruiting for SJU moving forward considering that just about every basketball conference is falling over each other to not only play games, but their conference tourney at MSG.

If we have a really good season this year, and Lavin gets his name, face and the SJU team in the spotlight, I think we are landing the even bigger fish recruits in another year or two.

"Final thought: The ACC was down a little bit the past couple of seasons, but that won't be the case again for a long, long time. This league is primed to be the dominant force in college basketball for years to come, with the Tobacco Road teams combining with the imports from the Big East to form a loaded group at the top of the standings. With Louisville coming in next season, it's tough to imagine the ACC not fielding at least one team in the Final Four on a yearly basis. It's going to be that good.

Could the ACC become to college basketball what the SEC is to college football? Probably not, as I think the balance of power in the sport is more spread out than our counterparts on the gridiron, and the NCAA tournament is the great equalizer. But it's not that ridiculous a thought -- and that's scary.

This year could feature at least five teams in the top 25 all season, and up to seven or eight teams in the NCAA tournament. And most of the top teams in the conference have serious question marks."

Some ACC/MSG presence;
“@JonRothstein: The Jimmy V Classic is set for 12/17 at MSG. Florida-Memphis, Cincinnati-Pitt. One heck of a doubleheader.”

“@JonRothstein: 12/17-12/21 could be one whale of a college hoops week at MSG. 12/17 Jimmy V Classic, 12/19 Duke vs. UCLA (tentative), 12/21 Ohio St vs. ND.”

After that, it is Duke's fair weather fan base which is very marginal up here and if Duke had a bad year would drop off like a rock.

Are you high?  How do you classify a Duke fan as "fair weather" --- if they weren't a fan in 1994-1995, the last time Duke missed the playoffs?  Duke's fanbase may be deserving of many of the names it is called and the malicious words spewed at it, but fair weather? I'd love to know where you even came up with that?  Please, pretty please, explain further since personally, this comment just shows you spew words without having a clue.

Regarding attendance and not drawing well, let's take a look the last few times Duke played at MSG:

1.  Duke - Michigan State at MSG November 15, 2011 - attendance of 19,979 (many duke fans were there - I know bc I was there - but as this was a big tourney and Coach K's big record breaking win, I'll disregard this one temporarily)
2.  Duke - Washington at MSG December 10, 2011 - attendance of 15,525 (but I bet those were all washington fans, right? - did we ever draw 15,000 last year at MSG?)
3.  Duke - St. John's at MSG January 30, 2011 - attendance of 19,353 (by far our highest attendance that season...the syracuse game drew 14,440...the PITT game drew 14,514...the UConn game drew 13,652).

In addition to these games, Duke has played at the Izod Center the last few years as well which is a tougher draw esp. bc it's not easy to get to from the city....let's see how they did there:

1.  Duke - Butler December 4, 2010 - attendance of 14,215
2.  Duke - Temple December 8, 2012 - attendance of 12,157

Let's look to Duke's worst season in recent memory - 2006-07 when they went 22-11:

1.  Duke - Gonzaga December 21, 2006 at MSG - drew 19,528
2.  Duke - St. John's February 25, 2007 at MSG - drew 17,283 (and we know that wasn't because of us...and Duke was only ranked #17 at the time).

Care to retract or alter your statement, MCN?  Duke is the BEST draw at MSG...even better than Cuse.  And you wonder why Coach K would be for the tourney in MSG?  It'd be a HUGE advantage for Duke, with only Syracuse even remotely comparing to the amount of Duke fans there.

I wasn't speaking based on attendance so I should clarify.  I dnt think Duke draws like Cuse though.  I probably used the wrong term.  "Bandwagon" fans is the term that I should have used, so in that you are correct.  Duke is much like Notre Dame who has a monstrous fan base because everybody who is Irish associates with Notre Dame as "their" team and therefore they have to be a fan.

I'm not criticizing because The PR machine for Duke is strong.  It is a testament to Duke that they have been sooo good for so long that they still draw girls to games who had a crush on Laetner and became fans for that sole reason.  Duke's fan base has been a bit manufactured by not only their success, but by ESPN, Vitale etc, that's all I'm saying.

Last time I was at the Duke vs SJU game at MSG, there were a row of young Duke fans from Long Island sitting in front of me that Im not sure they even knew Duke was in North Carolina.  Most of the Duke fans that seem to be the type that show up at MSG are casual Duke fans from the NYC area that jumped on the bandwagon along the way.  Duke is one of 3 other college teams they've heard of.

P.S.  from your tirade, it seems pretty clear where your allegiance is.

First, my tirade is because I am an unabashed Duke fan.  Who wouldn't be a fan of their alma mater?  But if you are suggesting I root for them over St. John's you don't know me well enough.  I wore St. John's gear to games at Duke, always root for St. John's over Duke, and anyone here who knows me better knows that.  Duke is team 1B for me.  St. John's has always been 1A (and I am also a St. John's alum...and the child of 2 St. John's alum...so I don't really think my allegiance should be questioned...pretty obvious my reasons for rooting for both and sj over duke).

Second, Duke has tons of bandwagon, unknowledgeable fans.  I agree with that 100000%.  I appreciate the clarification.  But I will have to agree to disagree with you on who draws better between Cuse and Duke.  It's definitely Duke.

First you say Duke fans are fairweather, then their bandwagon.  Then you question my "allegiance" (check the PS portion of your post), but now it's my attitude.

I think you have caught a case of improper verbiage, so I'll let you slide.  And yeah I get defensive when I deem either of my schools are attacked unfairly --- so I probably attacked you unjustly when it just turned out to be a case of using the wrong word.  If you had called Duke fans obnoxious and annoying, I wouldn't have said peep.  Because the majority are.

I still say Duke easily beats Cuse in terms of turning out in NYC....

Well you are coming across as an obnoxious and annoying Duke fan on these boards.  Your rant was agressive in tone.  My P.S. was after your rant which I thought inappropriate.  The point still remains that I never attacked Duke.  The comment about Duke was in passing and i used the wrong term.  Then Captain Duke fan comes along on the SJU boards to defend their honor.  I'll let you slide for getting up in my Internet grill with an obnoxious tone for what was merely a mistake I made and further corrected.

Agree,
With that said, it's a different story if their conference tournament was in NYC.  I think they'd show up in bigger numbers.   I actually think most ACC fan bases would have at least solid, if not spectacular, numbers if their tournament was here.
And MCN, apparently we have different memories because Pitt was well represented at our big game with them 3 years ago at MSG.   Our fans outnumbered them sure, but they had fans in the building.

Agree with Moose.  Pitt game was a sea of red.  Search YouTube for Hardy game winner over Pitt.  Try to spot the Pitt fans.

You are excellent at claiming you wrote something different than you did. Problem is we can see your old posts. Throwing an expletive in coach ks name when referring to him is attacking duke. Calling me captain duke fan "coming on the sju boards" questions my allegiance again. You are either horrible at knowing what you write or think you are way smarter than you are if you think you sound credible. Not surprising.

Point remains that nobody here but you cares abut Duke or how I spell their HC's name.

Agree with Moose.  Pitt game was a sea of red.  Search YouTube for Hardy game winner over Pitt.  Try to spot the Pitt fans.

I don't remember it that way either. To me it was closer to 2/3 - 1/3. Or at least it sounded closer to that since most of our fans sit on their hands and never root. I know there was a large group of Pitt fans sitting in the section next to me, and if Hardy misses that shot it would've been very "unpleasant" listening to them.
