Jeff Goodman- Best Recruits from July
« on: July 29, 2013, 06:46:06 PM »
http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/jeff-goodman/post?id=378

He lists 12 for 2014.  The following had or have SJU ties.

3. Abdul Malik Abu- He fasted until sundown each day due to his religious beliefs, but was still among the hardest-playing guys every time he took the court. The 6-8 power forward owns the glass, and is more skilled than people realize. His stock continues to soar. His final 10: UConn, Florida, Kentucky, Miami (FL), Providence, NC State, St. John’s, UCLA, Iowa State and Kansas State.

6. Goodluck Okonoboh- One year ago, he was buried on a bench for Leo Papile’s BABC program. Now the 6-9 Boston native has emerged as one of the most sought-after big men in the country with Vin Pastore’s Mass Rivals outfit. He’s not quite as tall as his buddy Nerlens Noel, but he’s similar in the fact he’s a defensive presence, a big-time shot-blocker and is raw on the offensive end. He has a lengthy list, with Duke and Indiana both in the mix.

He then lists 4 to watch from 2015 and 2016 combined.

1. Tyler Dorsey- Dorsey is so, so smooth. Some want to peg the Los Angeles native as a developing point guard, but he has the size at 6-4 and the ability to score in a variety of ways that will make him a star on the wing. He can make deep 3s, has step-back jumpers, can get to the basket and also handles the ball. He’s just a rising junior, so his recruitment is still in its early stages with no apparent front-runners at this juncture.

2. Stephen Zimmerman- The 7-foot Las Vegas native may not be the best player in the Class of 2015, but he’s surely one of them. The lefty big man plays hard on both ends, runs the floor well, can score in the post and also on the perimeter, blocks and alters shots and rebounds outside of his area. Some of the schools in the mix are UNLV, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, Arizona, Ohio State, UCLA, Louisville, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Baylor and St. John’s.

Odd Jeff Goodman is writing about grassroots. I wonder how the guys who cover that beat at ESPN feel about that.

Also Goodman saw same players repeatedly on the Nike circuit which is small % of players.

Makes you wonder what Telep's role as well as Katz going forward at ESPN.

There's always a place at ESPN for blowhards like Katz.

Isn't he just joining the team with the rest of them?  Telep, Biancardi, Finkelstein etc...  Just another set of eyes?

Hard to believe he left CBS (with Borzello and Parrish) just so he could be just another guy at ESPN.

I would think they can pay more.

They are the worldwide leader :)
Ironically didn't Goodman start at Fox?  I'd guess Fox eventually will build up a team in that regard as well.

In his 4 to watch he picks the #1 player in the 2015 class. Really going out on a limb there. Impressive work.

I couldn't afford him.

I'm not sure how much Goodman had on Telep's departure but Goodman's bump in salary from CBS was in the ballpark of what Telep's salary was at ESPN. Coincidence? There is going to be a carousel with CBS still looking to fill Goodman's role. Eric Prisbell (USA Today) or Dana O'Neill (ESPN)  could move into that role.  CBS could also go younger route with Rob Dauster (NBC). It doesn't appear that Matt Norlander or Jeff Borzello will be bumped up.

Telep could go to 247 Sports (Owned by CBS),  Fox Sports (former employer) which I think is less likely but who knows with their new TV deal, or just continue to do his scouting service which nets a cushy 6 figure salary.

I'm curious. Any idea what those guys make at the networks  ?
