Did Mo Hicks come to St. John's expecting to become an assistant coach?

That is what every DOBO comes in expecting.  Mo definitely took a pay cut for the opportunity, so you can't blame him for looking elsewhere after Coach Martin was added above him.

Yes, definitely. But, obviously, that did not come to pass.

This makes next season THAT much more exciting. Excuses for next season/Lavin are dwindling. Time for a leap next year.

Its not like St Johns and Lavin were the first ones to approach Mo about a position on a college staff.   He had other opportunities, and after declining a number of them he decided he liked what Lavin was offering.   He'll have options to coach, no doubt.

Nah, the pay and career interest of Mo are probably irrelevant to team performance.

But it sounds like the asst from SLU is a bright guy.  I could see that paying dividends.

Obviously Choz & Mo Hicks were respected members of Gauchos "family". Nobody likes to see a friend or associate lose a job.

he's networked enough that he's a lock to land on his feet.

i have no way of knowing why he was hired or why he left.  i was under the impression he'd be bringing in new york players we wouldn't get previously.

a check of the roster finds our only new yorker is a walk on.

It's not all about who we signed and didn't sign; Moe gave Lavin credibility in New York, and he was another guy out there (even if he couldn't actually recruit) who was telling people that the St Johns turn around was for real, and that we would compete on a national stage again.

The program needed messengers like that.   And as much as we credit Lavin with brining the program instant credibility and exposure (and he did do that) to a lesser extent he was able to do it by surrounding himself with Rico, Moe, Tony, and Dunlap.         

The way the release was worded 'return to coaching' I got a feeling he has a HC gig lined up in the city HS ranks.

"Lose a job" certainly implies being pushed out the door.  Seems like there is more to the story...

That implication (Lost his job) was not said in the press release. Not saying it's not the case, but at this point the press release states he resigned. It maybe the case that he wasn't getting an assistant coach position with us so he respectfully moved on. Although I will say its curious that the press release stated the search for a replacement is already near complete which could lead one to believe Mo may have been pushed out or he could have informed Lavin of his intentions to leave long before the press release. Still wonder what Martin's contributions are.

The better question newsie is what NYC players where we interested in that we didn't get during the relevant period?  There were plenty of NY kids we could have gotten the past two years (as it is, we got Harkless, CO and Felix from the high school ranks).
