Sixth man
« on: September 14, 2013, 01:28:12 PM »
Has anyone thought about using SirDom as the sixth man?  Wasn't Postel often used that way?   It could help keep him and others out of foul trouble and give the team a defensive lift when he comes in at the five minute or so mark.

I think I understand where you are coming from but Sir Dom is this teams "first" man.

I like Dom in the first unit because he can flourish when he's not being asked to score. Presumably Dangelo, Jakarr, and Orlandp will be out there with Branch or Jordan.    When teams turn their attention on those guys that gives Dom lanes to crash the boards and be open in transition.  Things hes great at.

Also, fwiw I think ball movement was our biggest weakness on offense.  But Dom did lead us in assists, he's a sneaky good passer.  Play him with Orlando and a healthy Branch and I think the offense opens up and becomes more fluid.

Dom is to valuable and versatile as 6th man. I see Sanchez starting and CO being the 6th man.

I think Phil Greene would be best 6th man on the team. Change of pace guard can come in at 1 or 2.

I vote for Pointer for 6th man.  To me, he's the energy guy on the team. Should we start off slow and need a player to provide a spark, it's him. He can get after it on defense, and that is a major area of concern IMO.

However, I doubt that he will come off the bench. Coach loves that Greene takes care of the ball, and works hard. I don't know how much his injury disrupted his play last year, or how his surgery will change it this year, but I bet coach keeps him in the fold this season.

Rysheed 3rd man off the bench?

I could see, and would be happy with either Dom or Greene as 6th man.  Depending if a G or F/C gets in early foul trouble will likely decide which, will come off the bench first....  Ideally, for me, it would be Phil..

GHarrison
GBranch
G Jordan
FSampson
CSanchez

1st off bench-   Phil, CO,Dom

Big lineups start Dom or CO for Jordan.

I feel like once the BE season gets going, it will be tough to keep Jordan off the court as a starter.  Will likely start season coming off bench if I had to guess though.

I think it would be great if Greene was good enough to warrant time over Jordan, but for two years, we've seen a guy that isn't the answer at either guard spot. He can't run the offense. He can't penetrate, he can't shoot and he isn't a very good defender.

When he comes to spell a guard as the 6th man, what is coming in to do other than not directly turn the ball over?

To be honest, I think Greene would be very good in limited minutes. Just, when he has to play 30+ minutes in a game, he looks bad. He's actually a decent defender and a good mid-range shooter.

Agree with you on starters but would rather Dom be first off bench as opposed to Phil. In the end I don't think there's anyway Dom isn't starting on opening day though.

"6th man" is a bit difficult with this team because of our depth.  It could be Sir'Dom, Obekpa, Greene or others.  With our team, it's more of an "8th man" concept, because we will have such a deep rotation.

Yeah, sorry.. My first off the bench list was in no specific order.  More based on situation in game.  Big guy in foul trouble, CO comes in..  Branch gets two quick ones... Phil comes in..

Vey deep team when you think about it.  Dom seems like the kind of guy you should start.  His mentality is that he's the man, the best. Period.  That kind of mentality in practice and prep for a game is tough maintain when you aren't starting.   With Obekpa coming off the bench already, you have your energetic game-changer.  Greene can come in to score from the one or two spots.  I think he'll be a very valuable weapon. I wouldn't be shocked to see Coach go with a three-way sub after 3-5  minutes with Jordan, Greene and Obekpa subbing for Branch, Dom,  and Sanchez/Sampson.

Dom does so much better than a lot of guys on the team.  I think he should be out there to start.  If he gets into foul trouble, there is more than enough depth to let him sit.

I think that is an accurate description. I would like to see him play 12-15 minutes a night. If he's playing 30+ minutes a game, we're going to the NIT again.

Dom was the leader of last year's team and is the best defensive player on the court.  Just hard to see him coming off the bench even with Sampson, Sanchez, and Obekpa.

Agree with you.  He's just a hot and cold player in my opinion.

That being said, he's not afraid to take the ball and run with it.  Admirable quality.
