i can take a loss, its part of the game you win some you loose some but loosing like this is what separates us from the upper echelon teams in the country
if he was having such trouble from the field why foul him from behind the 3?... again dumb basketball

It was a choke job, but this is not what separates us from the upper echelon.  What separates us is our lousy defense and poor decision making.  Also not great shot selection.  They either aren't a great coached team, or they don't execute or both.   This team is far from an upper echolon team... and I'm a huge fan of theirs.. this is just a fact.

harrsion shooting in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock in a 2 point game with the game under two minutes, up two and chris throws a 45 foot outlet pass, jakarr fouling three point shooter. is all what separates us. we don't make smart moves. our best possession of the to was when we moved the ball got it down to jakaar the double team came and he kicked it out for a greene 3. THATS BASKEBALL!!! we ran the same block to block or elbow to elbow double screen all game against the zone. this team hangs in games like this because of talent not because of iq, smarts, execution or coaching.  those upper echelon teams have a great combination of all the above. we don't. and we also tend to play to level of competition. this is why we struggle to pull away from monmouth, wagner, and long wood. we don't have a consistent level of play however we consistently make poor mistakes. how do we go into the game knowing they only have 2 scorers and they both end up with 25plus? i thought were elite defending team? or were frazier and newbill both lottery picks and we just couldn't stop them because there that damn good.

I think only 8 of Frazier's points were from the field.  The rest were free throws.  Looks like we stopped him or rather tried to, but got called any time we did.

That wasn't a foul.  Not even close.  He leaned in, Jamal never even left his feet.   Should've been an offensive foul if anything.
We didn't play well - so we have no one to blame but ourselves.
But with that said - the officiating was a disgrace.

and shoot me if you don't agree but harrison has to make that free-throw. he can't have this macho swag and get out dueled by tim frazier at the end of the game in a freethrow duel. first team all big east right.. doug mcdermott is not missing that free-throw .. harrison has to put the game away.

Agreed.  But it is not the end of the world.

He is going to make more game winning plays then he will failing on the FT line.  But he needed to make both.

I respect your opinion, but would you agree this team is failing to demonstrate reasonable defensive proficiency thus far & the problem must be corrected ASAP? I know it is early, but the lack of defensive commitment & concentration thus far is disturbing. Blocks, yes, good defense, no!

Well it did get corrected at least to some extent in the second half.

Guards like Harrison need to understand that the game is called much tighter now and that is the staff's job and failure so far.

It's not just on the ball defense though. Yes, that needs to improve - no question.  Stopping the ball handler and playing the ball screen continue to be a problem.
And we do need to learn to play within the new rules.  You're absolutely right about that.
But we also need to learn that being "close" to a shooter isn't the same thing as playing tight defense.    If you're 4 feet away, you might as well be 10ft away. because they're going to be able to get off a clean look.

Team sucks now. Hopefully they won't suck when it matters most. Have my doubts though.

Now? Why now, was the team good when we were making comeback victories against the likes of Longwood , Wagner? Or when we were in a battle with Monmoth?  With Lavin spinning  his
4-1 record rhetoric,  I would hope that most would see through that.

Linda - when did I say we suck now?  We have sucked so far all season. It's a long season though. I'm sure you'll have plenty more opportunities to point out how bad we are.  Cheer up.

Don't blame me for why quote function did not work properly!  :)

It's shocking how many mistakes we made tonight. Lavin keeps saying we need time to gel, but reality is he's trying to buy himself time because this team is nowhere near well coached right now. It all starts with defense. They can play solid d here and there but lack the discipline and intensity to put together a whole game. Coaching!

I was hoping for a better season.  I don't like going to games rooting for a team that looks so disorganized that teams with an obvious deficit in talent are able to keep up with us.  I never thought I would say this but I actually miss Looie who I believe the game passed by in his later years.  At least his teams were always competitive and played tough, tenacious defense.  When he did have superior talent, which was not often, we usually had our way with the lesser teams.  Here's hoping the season gets better.

Also someone needs to check Hooper's credentials - he can't be from Harvard because taking a flagrant there is incredibly dumb

3-2 matchup zone pretty much the whole game with Jakarr playing the  top of the key.

Looked like the kid slipped AGAIN after slipping and traveling a few minutes earlier and Hooper connected.  Very similar to a football player lowering his body causing a helmet to helmet type hit.
Remember who broke the Slice news

Spoiler alert. I didn't look at the box score but saw Dan post for the first time since August and figured it must be bad. :)

So I didn't get to see the game.

Just looking at the box score I'm shocked. Penn State is not very good. Frazier getting to the line 20 times is awful.

Also Penn State's front line is soft. I like DJ but he is a MAAC level forward, Brendon Taylor is a poor man's Jae Crowder, and Julian Moore is Phil Wait raw. St. John's should have been attacking the rim.

Jordan 6 min in an OT game. Am I missing something? If Sampson isn't hitting shots and Obekpa is on the floor extended minutes this really really hurts the offense. I saw Sanchez had all of his 7 points in first half (3-3) and only played 17 min.

I'm waiting for Lavin to go small and play Dom at the 4. Get out and run!

Everyone RELAX!!! omg i'm getting to the point where i don't even want to look at game threads, maybe people think we are supposed to be a top 10 team, maybe people think we should go 28-0. Of course this team has flaws and needs work, however i see the light at the end of the tunnel and no its not the oncoming train. I love SJU hoops and am pi$$ed off that we aren't 6-0 as everyone else but i see (as much as i can on espn game cast lol) some things that we can improve on over the course of the year.

Yes  I  think St John's is subposed to be a top 20 team in 8 out of 10 years. Now in the first 50 years I follow the team this was close to being true, now in the last 15 not so much. I don't remember McGuire, Lapchick or Lou spending their time providing Quotes for the press.

He flirted with the a small line-up during the game. Personally, I'd like to see him establish a set rotation and just stick with it. Part of the reason our offense sputters is because guys are in and out of the game or completely buried on the bench certain times. How is a team suppose to establish a rhythm or identity?
