Another mind-numbing contribution.. thank you.

When it is dark out it is night time, when the sun comes out it is day time. Figured you might want to ponder the amazingness of those statements.
Seriously if "it is amazing what a championship does for perception" blows your mind did you ever stop to think how the light bulb goes on when the fridge is open but stays off when it is shut?
Listen unlessyou have a bong and a bag of cheetos in front of you these are pretty fundamental ideas we are talking about here.

Can't I just say that I was kidding,or trying to get a rise out of people with my stupid posts, like some people do when they are wrong or make no sense?

Wow. I thought Harrison would transfer. If I was Harrison I would have transfered. I pulled that Baylor thing out of my arse, and I am pretty sure I posted as much. I did keep it up becuase the middle aged white guys on these boards were ridiculous in some of their posts about Harrison. If I have an opinion that turns out wrong I can admit that. I was clearly joking about the specifics though.

I just think you are trying to suck up to Fordham becuase if anyone disagrres with him he acts like a 4 year old and takes his computer and goes home. Don't be scared of him Boo

Would like to see Sanchez living in the high post against Syracuse. His passing against their zone could make a very big difference.

Not only Sanchez, but Sampson as well.  Both guys are good at sticking jumpers from 10-15 feet out.  It can kill the zone if we can get it to them, especially Sanchez' passing when he gets doubled there.

Another key to this zone is not shooting over it but dribble penetration.  Now more than ever with the new foul rules, we have to dribble through the zone becaus we will draw fouls.  The 2-3 pretty much acts likes trap around much of the perimeter except for the corners.  Need to split defenders wi the dribble because 1) we are likely to get fouled because the refs will whistle defenders for using their hands and 2) once your past the first layer of defenders, it's wide open for scoring opportunities, escpecially if you can find open men with the pass.

The main part of our plan should be to get Ennis in foul trouble.  He's the head of the hydra and they have nobody that can come close to replacing him.  My plan goes like this.  Harrison (or other guard)curls off screens at the top of the key, then drive straight to the foul line between Ennis and Cooney... When diving between defenders swiping at Harrison, prompts the patented Geno Lawrence head fake foul.  Bam... Ennis draws a few quick ones and Boeheim starts anxiously picking his nose to decide whether Gbinje or Cooney should move to PG the rest of the game.

A very interesting Ken Pomeroy blog article from last season scouting our enemy that is approaching on Sunday.  Interesting overall with respect to importance of defending the three pointer vs not and the Cuse zone.

The takeaway is that 1) statistically, if we are going to shoot threes in this game, it should be from the corners which are by far the 2-3 zone's biggest holes on the perimeter.  It means D'Lo, Hooper, Primo, Greene or whomever else takes threes in this game should be coaxed to do so from the corners.  Anywhere besides the corners and it's a "bad shot" and your essentially being trapped.

2) when it comes to defending the three, it is more important to create the perception that it is a bad shot for the shooter to take, rather than overcomitting on defense, flying in on a pump fake and causing our defense to shift out of position like we tend to do.

Interesting to debate the different strategies to make them do the same and take bad shots.  It is their perimeter scorers that do most of Cuse's scoring.

Syracuse's Achilles heel?

http://sujuiceonline.com/2013/12/11/syracuse-basketballs-achilles-heel-perimeter-defense-rebounding/

They're talking a lot of noise, but their numbers aren't typical of their better teams.  This team is beatable.

Their strength is turning people over.  Our strength is not turning it over.  SJU ranks #44 nationally in fewest turnovers per game.  Need to just force them to take bad shots and confuse their offense with a mix of man, 1-2-2 and pressing.  Hit the boards and this game can be had.  We need to come out playing from. Minute 1 and execute as close to the Fordham game as we can replicate.

2) when it comes to defending the three, it is more important to create the perception that it is a bad shot

If this is true the obvious strategy would be to move Harrison to the top of the 1-2-2 and have him roll his eyes every time someone attempts a three.

I'll take that.  Now the 1-2-2 can cause difficult looks so in that suggestion, I think it might deter their shooters from launching easy shots at the top of the key.

So, do you guys think Saturday's game causes anything as far as the rotation?
Does Sanchez's coming out party move him back into the starting lineup?     Is Marco going to get some burn to try to beat the zone?

Would hope Sanchez gets a ton of time, whether he starts or not. I believe he needs to hang out at foul line area
against zone to hit short jumper or dump down low to Sampson or Obekpa. He is a far better passer than JaKarr, so I hope Lav goes that way. I don't expect Marco to get much time, nice job against Fordham (with big lead) or not.

I generally agree with you Paultz.   I think this is a tough game for coach Lavin because there's going to be a lot of second guessing if we lose, no matter what he does.

A case could be made that he needs to play Hooper a lot; that Obekpa should be out there as much as possible to shut down Cuse's penetration; that Orlando should play 30min because he can shoot and pass from the high post and was brilliant against Fordham; that Rhysheed is our biggest talent and should be out there as much as possible; and, (my fav) that Branch needs to be running the offense.

And yet all those things can't happen simultaneously.   It will be very interesting to see how he works his substitutions

Good points. Hopefully this will, at the very least , be a competitive game and provide momentum for successful season. I know Cuse is solid, but we have the horses to make it interesting.

Baye Keita might block a good bit of shots, but he's not on Obekpa's level.  I dare them to come at us with floaters all day.  The other problem is that we don't just have Obekpa blocking shots.  We have other guys who are excellent in that regard as well like Sanchez, Sampson, Pointer etc..  We still have to heed their warnings and what they'll try to do.  Play solid defense first, then block what you can.

Some respect from "Coach in Waiting";

@syrbasketball: MT @Coach_Hopkins: A11: I love competing vs St Johns. Great program with a lot of history.  Nothing is like a rivalry game in MSG. #hoptalks

We have heard from the Cuse that getting their body into the big cuts down on the operating space needed to block shots. This game might present a chance to take the charge.
