Rysheed Coming Out Party
« on: December 15, 2013, 09:10:02 PM »
Rysheed Jordan’s commitment to Steve Lavin and St. John’s last spring was billed as a major recruiting coup.Sunday afternoon, Red Storm fans got to see what all the fuss was about.

After a quiet first seven games, the Philadelphia product — the highest-rated recruit of the Lavin era — performed like the difference-making point guard he was portrayed as, scoring a career-high 13 points to go along with three assists, getting the better of highly touted Syracuse point guard Tyler Ennis for most of the second half of the Orange’s 68-63 win at the Garden.

“Rysheed’s been in a nice groove here for the last two-plus weeks of showing progress, improving, positive momentum,” Lavin said, “and today was another example of that at both ends of the floor, the way he can influence the game.”
Jordan energized the St. John’s comeback, scoring nine of his 13 points in the second half, limiting Ennis to just six of his 21 points after the break and showcasing the dynamic penetrating and play-making ability St. John’s fans had been anticipating.

That’s what we’ve been waiting for the whole year,” St. John’s forward Sir’Dominic Pointer said. “He had his best of the year. He made free throws, he made shots. That’s what we look for in Rysheed, attack the rim and draw fouls.”
Ennis’ team got the win, and he did hit the basket that put Syracuse ahead to stay, a layup with 4:11 left, but Jordan made his mark. He consistently got into the lane, breaking down Syracuse’s vaunted 2-3 zone, drawing fouls and freeing up teammates for open shots.

“That’s what we need him to do for the rest of his carer,” St. John’s forward JaKarr Sampson said.

It was certainly an impressive coming-out party — against one of the best freshman point guards in the country no less.

Rysheed came out with no confidence and timid.  He ended the game as our best player and was getting into the lane at will.  He drew contact every time, and he looks so natural when he gets some space.  He needs the keys to the car, because we can't afford to have him  play with no confidence again.  He needs to stop thinking and start reacting and that will only come with more burn.

He's also our best defender.  Very impressed.

His on ball defense has been phenomenal. Ennis got anywhere he wanted to go until Jordan was put on him. I want so bad for him to get a steal, a breakaway, and a dunk. Kid will tear it up this conference season.

He needs the keys to the car like Ennis.  There is no doubt that Ennis is the guy at point and I think that gives Ennis so much confidence.  Jordan came out overthinking everything and he just needs to play.  I think we were probably the two biggest fans of Branch coming into this game, but I left this game feeling we need Jordan to be the man if we want to do anything in March.

Well then he needs to assert himself and quickly.  He has the skill, there is no question.

Ennis is real good but he will run into a freshmen wall this winter.

SJU's depth will allow Jordan to stay fresh and hopefully pay dividends down the road.

Ennis very savy player, but will suffer when he starts getting defended a bit better ala Jordsn did today.  Ennis is slow, and when he doesn't have his angle, will struggle getting PG's guys.  Grest to see a glimpse of the way Rysheed can play.  I can say that we only got a taste today.  Kid is going to grow leaps and bounds over this season and beyond.

Branch made 3-4 GREAT passes today that should have resulted in baskets but did not...he is a very good passer...That said, I cannot argue with coach's decision to ride Jordan...

That said, I agree that he should look to score a bit more

Rysheed has so much talent its scary. At some point he will get into that groove where he is burying jumpers combined with the defense and penetration. I know its said about alot of players but with Sheed sky really is the limit

No he won't. Ennis is just super smooth. Crazy he went largely unrecruited for a long time. Cuse was only high major watching him during his hs junior year. I absolutely loved him in HS. He's going to be a stud 4 year player for them.

It is funny a lot of scouts would talk about who was best PG of this class? Harrison was always atop with Hill being 2nd. The trio of Cat Barber, Tyler Ennis, and Rysheed Jordan would get scrambled a lot. Sina and Britt would be in the conversation too. Both fell out of favor as they headed into their senior year. I still like Britt but I'm a softy for lefties.

Barber/Jordan can play above the rim much better than Ennis but Ennis doesn't rattle.

Also I'd always throw Roddy Peters in the mix but I was on an island there.

I agree...Ennis is a stud.  He may never be a great pro due to his athleticism, but I bet he sees a few Final Fours if he stays at least three years.  I doubt he hits a wall, because he doesn't rely on his physical attributes as much as his high IQ and court savvy.

I really can't believe there wasn't more pressure.  As soon as Coach applied it, it resulted in two quick turnovers and Ennis found it tough to bring it up against Jordan.

If Ennis is slow how would you categorize the guards he was blowing by for much of the game.

Ennis is slow

After having heard your description of Syracuse over the past week I expected a better showing yesterday. The front court is soft, Fair can't go right, Ennis is slow and Boeheim is overrated. Hard to believe they hung with us as long as they did with all their shortcomings.

Ennis was always in control but he did push off a lot that he never got called for it. Super impressed with both freshman but Ennis was always confident while Sheed first half, none. Bummed we didn't win this game but hopefully we learn and now finally pull it all together and win a lot of games.

Watch Fair.  He not only cant go to his right hand at all, but can't drive when forced to the right either.  The kid is excellent.  It will just be an Achilles heel for him when talking about him as an nba prospect.
